The harsh and subservient labors of most citizens fantastically enrich a few others who don't have to labor at all. In general, those who work longer and harder get less. Those who work less long and less hard get more. On the upper West Side of New York City, barely a mile apart exist neighborhoods in which the average disposable income is on the poorer side about $5,000 per year and on the richer side about $500,000 per year. The richest people in the U.S. are worth more than the populations of whole countries. The poorest people in the U.S. live under bridges in threadbare cardboard shelters, or stop living at all. This gap is not due to different industriousness or talent. It is due to social relations that force the many to enrich the few. Capitalism is alienation and anti-sociality. Within capitalism the motives guiding decisions are pecuniary not personal, selfish not social. We each seek individual advance at the expense of others. The result, unsurprisingly, is an anti-social environment in which nice guys finish last. In U.S. hospitals, tens of thousands of people a year die of diseases they did not have when they entered. This is in considerable part a matter of hygiene and other correctable problems. Yet there is no massive campaign to save these lives. It would not be profitable. Starvation the world over has the same root cause; to feed the poor sufficiently is not as profitable as over- feeding the rich. What health we attain, what food we eat, what housing we inhabit, comes to us because someone was seeking not health, sustenance, or shelter for all, but profit for themselves. Economic logic seeks profit rather than social well being. In some places Sarkar seems like a protectionist and other times he extols the virtues of Singapore and “free trade” zones. Is it that once regions are self­reliant, trade leads to win­win solutions but in conditions of centre­periphery relations, trade leads to the opposite condition?     Commons and Cooperatives Greig de Peuter and Nick Dyer-Witheford1 Abstract In the last decade, the commons has become a prevalent theme in discussions about collective but decentralized control over resources. This paper is a preliminary exploration of the potential linkages between commons and cooperatives through a discussion of the worker cooperative as one example of a labour commons. We view the worker coop as a response at once antagonistic and accommodative to capitalism. This perspective is amplified through a consideration of five aspects of an ideal-type worker cooperativism: associated labour, workplace democracy, surplus distribution, cooperation among cooperatives, and, controversially, links between worker cooperatives and socialist states. We conclude by suggesting that the radical potential of worker cooperatives might be extended, theoretically and practically, by elaborating connections with other commons struggles in a process we term the circulation of the common. Commoners and workers In the last decade, talk of “commons,” “commoning,” and even “commonwealth,” has become, well, common, on the left in discussions of collective but decentralized control over resources ranging from farmlands to fresh water, ocean fisheries, clean air, software code, and genetic information.2 Starting point for critical accounts of the commons is typically the historical destruction of the collective land of pre-capitalist agricultural communities; in Europe between the 16th and 18th centuries these were enclosed by mercantile landlords eager to sell agricultural goods in an expanding world market. Such enclosures were a crucial part of the process of primitive accumulation, creating early capitalism’s dispossessed proletariat from displaced rural populations. These commoners did not go quietly: enclosure faced “hydra- headed” opposition, but these struggles were lost and largely forgotten.3 Interest in commons was revived by neoliberalism.

    Guest commentary Marxism after communism MICHAEL BURAWOY University of California, Berkeley It is with apprehension but also conviction that I defend Marxism today1- apprehension because we live in a period that is suspicious of visions of alternative futures, skeptical of grand historical narrative, dismissive of materialist explanations, rejecting of class analysis while tolerating capitalism's defects and pathologies as unavoidable and natural; conviction because we live in a period that ever more closely conforms to Marxist prognoses of a capitalist juggernaut, a period that cries out for a critical Marxist consciousness. While every plank in the Marxist framework is under siege, the critical intellect is in desperate need of Marxism's refusal to identify what could be with what is. You might well ask, why the critical intellect might draw on such a supposedly moribund doctrine as Marxism? Did not the death of Soviet communism drive the final nail into the Marxist coffin as it was being lowered into its grave? Did not the burial have both concrete and metaphoric meaning, laying to rest not only a social, political, and economic order but also a whole way of seeing? Before hastening to the funeral parlor, one should remember that although Marxism may have been a specter that haunted the twentieth century, by the same token it also inspired some of the century's greatest and most creative thinking - for and against Marxism - in philosophy, history, economics, and politics, not to mention sociology. Intellectuals who celebrate the end of Marxism may be digging their own graves, too. Marxism has an uncanny knack of reappearing when and where it is least expected.

    Forward to the Slovak Edition of After Capitalism (2010) This book was not written with Slovakia in mind. It was written in response to the unexpectedly large protests against neoliberal globalization that came to public attention in November, 1999, when demonstrators from all over the world, representing a wide variety of political, economic and ethical concerns, brought to a halt the Seattle meetings of the World Trade Organization. The critique of neoliberalism driving this activist upsurge seemed to me to be both important and accurate--but also incomplete. For it had not gone deeply enough. It had focused on the immorality and irrationality of a certain form of capitalism, the form identified with the "Washington Consensus," but not on capitalism itself. Nor had it addressed in any systematic fashion the question of alternatives. Since this question has long been at the center of my own research, I felt obliged to offer a contribution to what I call in this book, "the counterproject," the global movement, as yet far from unified, to create a world that is qualitatively freer, happier, and more just than the world we inhabit today. At the heart of this book is an economic model, a model for an economically viable, ethically desirable form of socialism. The model elaborated here is result of more than three decades of research, research motivated by three fundamental facts: First of all, the fact that Marx, while providing us (humanity) with a powerful and compelling critique of capitalism, did not provide us with an explicit model for a viable alternative to capitalism.
