Cricket Brassington Style What a splendid idea it is to have a friendly game of cricket on our new recreation facility against the stunning backdrop of our green valley. Cricket Brassington-style, brings together young and old, male and female, and with the help of a few volunteers and fantastic culinary delights, a grand day can be had by all.

We began in 2015 and chose two teams from those willing to have a go. The teams were named Golconda v Nickalum – after local ancient lead mines. One memorable moment was when Arthur Allcock batted with his grandson Alfie, the lad quipping to his elder “Come on grandad, run quicker!” That game ended in a tie.

2016’s game took place on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Some players were seen to be bowling the usual hand-grenade lobs and pea rollers but the quality did not dampen people’s enjoyment. Golconda won that one and Mark Allcock received man of the match. Both matches were ably umpired by our very own Moran and Clough – No Dickie Bird tantrums from these two.

So if you fancy a bit of entertainment this year either as player, watcher or cake maker, please feel free to join in the fun at the recreation ground on Sunday Sept 3rd. All kit provided but it is a soft ball game, so no black eyes. Tea is between innings. This is a community event and all funds raised go to our village. More information will be on posters around the village nearer the date. We look forward to seeing all there!

The Brassington Wakes Service Trying to fit God into all of that can be a challenge, though in truth he’s there all along. When I was … is quite unique! The Litter Pick

The litter pick took place this Spring and lots of litter was collected by more than ten local residents. Thanks to Bill and Sue, the organisers and all who took part.

The Village Pond

Work continues with the pond. We’ve skimmed off the algae with a giant patented pond skimmer! Barley straw bales have been placed in the water to ensure the pond keeps clear. Work is planned to reduce the leaks over the summer with concreting and new clay. A bench will be installed and the grass area renovated. All in good time – the small group of volunteers would welcome more helpers! Although the pond still looks a bit rough it will be better in time and the frogs, tadpoles and newts love it. 8 Football

Weddings at our lovely St James’ Church have been a long established tradition in Brassington, and here are photographs of four happy couples married here over the last 65 years.

1952 t Barbara Holdsworth and Barrie Paine were married on a glorious sunny day on 26th July 1952 and have lived in Brassington all their married life. They were married by the Rural Dean from Turnditch, just before Rev J D Lytle was inaugurated to serve Brassington Church for many years. They celebrated their Wedding Breakfast at Brassington School catered by Spencer’s Bakery from Ashbourne. 1964

Pat Brindley and Charles Horrocks were married on u 16th May 1964. Pat and Charles have lived in Brassington all their lives and continue to be stalwarts of the community with lots of active roles within the village. 1972

t Jennifer Gerrard and Ian Jack were married on 17th June 1972 by Reverend J D Lytle. Jenny was born and bred in Brassington and met Ian, an Ashbourne lad, at a family wedding in Wembley. They have lived in Brassington all their married life and continue to enjoy village and family life, being actively involved with the Church, Village Hall and numerous other community projects.

Moving on from our three couples married in the fifties, sixties and seventies – we are pleased that the tradition continues, and include one of the latest weddings to be held at Brassington Church.

Hayley Kirkham and Mathew Bean were married on u 2016 Saturday 1st October by Rev. David Truby. Mathew is a Yorkshire Man and fell in love with Brassington when he first came to visit. He and his extended family thought all the little traditions were very quirky – like roping the road on the wedding day – it’s not something that they had ever come across! Hayley said it was a perfect day from start to finish and it meant so much for her to be married in the church in the village where she grew up. 12 Photography

If, like me, you’ve always thought of orchids as rather exotic and uncommon plants, you’ll be interested to know there are about 29 different species in the UK. They range in abundance from the aptly named Common Spotted orchid to the mega rare Ghost orchid that was rediscovered in 2009 after being considered extinct for nearly 2 decades. Better still, some of the more common plants live right here in Brassington.

Eagle-eyed walkers treading the footpaths leading out of the village from Hillside will be treated to the rich colours of Early Purple orchid ‘spikes’ as they flower throughout April to June. Yet, even with their striking colour palette, the younger, smaller plants can be tricky to spot as they take on a condensed pyramidal shape amongst the grass. The taller, more mature plants are more easily picked out as they stand up to 50cm tall.

As with other species of orchid, the Early Purple orchid relies on insects to act as pollinators, but unlike many insect-pollinated plants, they produce no nectar, enticing the unwitting insects to their petals with their bright colours and intricate shapes. Amazingly, some species have gone a step further and have evolved to resemble the shape of insects to help attract specific pollinators such as For those interested in flower photography, when the well known Bee orchid and the less common photographing flowers, perspective becomes very Fly orchid. important. A top-down shot of this spike would not reveal much other than the general size and The Early Purple’s beauty has not escaped the colour of the plant.
