Reconstructing Palaeoenvironments of the White Peak Region of Derbyshire, Northern England THE UNIVERSITY OF HULL Reconstructing Palaeoenvironments of the White Peak Region of Derbyshire, Northern England being a Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Hull by Simon John Kitcher MPhysGeog May 2014 Declaration I hereby declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own, except where otherwise stated, and that it has not been previously submitted in application for any other degree at any other educational institution in the United Kingdom or overseas. ii Abstract Sub-fossil pollen from Holocene tufa pool sediments is used to investigate middle – late Holocene environmental conditions in the White Peak region of the Derbyshire Peak District in northern England. The overall aim is to use pollen analysis to resolve the relative influence of climate and anthropogenic landscape disturbance on the cessation of tufa production at Lathkill Dale and Monsal Dale in the White Peak region of the Peak District using past vegetation cover as a proxy. Modern White Peak pollen – vegetation relationships are examined to aid semi- quantitative interpretation of sub-fossil pollen assemblages. Moss-polsters and vegetation surveys incorporating novel methodologies are used to produce new Relative Pollen Productivity Estimates (RPPE) for 6 tree taxa, and new association indices for 16 herb taxa. RPPE’s of Alnus, Fraxinus and Pinus were similar to those produced at other European sites; Betula values displaying similarity with other UK sites only. RPPE’s for Fagus and Corylus were significantly lower than at other European sites. Pollen taphonomy in woodland floor mosses in Derbyshire and East Yorkshire is investigated. Significant variations in tree pollen percentages within 1 metre quadrats of continuous moss cover are found, with micro-topography and aspect suggested as primary controls. Pollen taphonomy is investigated at the River Wye in Derbyshire to provide a context for the palaeoenvironmental study. The taphonomic model at the River Wye field site was found to be more similar to a small enclosed lake, contradicting the model proposed for open fluvial systems. Sub-fossil pollen evidence suggests that climatic change exacerbated by catchment- scale anthropogenic deforestation was the dominant mechanism influencing tufa cessation at both the White Peak field sites. The Monsal Dale field site is suggested as being in the early stages of degradation, and the Lathkill Dale field site suggested as representing the terminal stage of the tufa system shut-down. iii Acknowledgements This thesis has benefitted from the help of many people.     Limestone Rock In Derbyshire’s White Peak The rocks of the Carboniferous period starting with the oldest (lowest) are; Limestone Rock, the Edale Shales, Millstone Grit and the Coal Measures. The only rocks missing locally (the Hope Valley area) are the Coal Measures. The most abundant and most interesting of all these rocks is Limestone. Read on and find out how interesting it really is. Using the most up to date measuring techniques the Carboniferous Limestone of the White Peak of Derbyshire is estimated to be about 350 million years old. (2010). It is made from the limey shells, bones and secretions of marine life. Creatures living in ancient semi-tropical seas obtained calcium (lime) from the sea water to make their shells, bones, and limey structures. When these creatures died they sank to the sea floor where they were gradually compressed and cemented together to make limestone rock. Some of these sea creatures retained their shape and we see them as fossils. The steep sloping fronts of the hills on the south and west sides of the Hope Valley including Mitchill Bank, Cow Low, Long Cliff and Treak Cliff are all that is left on the surface of a great reef. These reef limestones are very rich in the fossilised remains of sea creatures, some are very rare, others very common, like crinoids, plant-like creatures that lived on the sea bed about 350 million years ago. They varied in size, up to about a metre high. Crinoids were very easily damaged by wave action so we see an abundance of broken stems but very rarely a complete fossilised crinoid.

    U3A Naturalists’ Field Trip to Derbyshire 8-12 June 2015 Group outside the hotel 30 members of our group set out from Harrogate for our first venue which was Potteric Carr Nature Reserve run by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust near Doncaster, where various guides escorted us around the large reserve which has a variety of habitats ranging from lagoons to woodland. We then continued to Dovedale in Derbyshire where we stayed in the Holiday Fellow- ship Centre there. Unlike previous years when we had the venue to ourselves, we were sharing with other groups each following a different pursuit. It also meant that we shared tables at meal times and could join in a variety of evening activities such as country dancing which proved to be quite popular with some members. We explored Dovedale itself the following day and began by climbing Thorpe Cloud just behind the hotel for the magnificent views from the top. Dovedale is set amidst limestone scenery and is part of ‘The White Peak’. We enjoyed a day of examining the flora and tree species inhabiting the dale and some of us extended the walk and returned via a fairly ‘ adventurous’ route on a higher path to enjoy the magnificent scenery. Wednesday took us to Lathkill Dale – a beautiful On top of Thorpe Cloud valley with a crystal clear stream running through it and remnants of industrial archaeology where an innovative system of water pipes helped provide a constant supply of water to the surrounding area. Further up the dale we found a unique location for the attractive ‘ Jacob’s Ladder’ ( Polemonium caeruleum).

Steve was telling us at a party hosted by his “mate Eamsie” that he asked the woman concerned Sharon Sullivan to do this 3 or 4 times. She was only too happy to oblige! Steve reached a big birthday recently and I was very pleased to meet him, Sylvie, his sister Barbara and Cap’n Betty Sherry on their Canal Boat Trip at The Plough on the day concerned. As Steve is doing The Annapurna Sanctuary in December we can expect lots of photos on his website. Speaking of social media affairs, the BBN Facebook group continues to go from strength to strength ably marshalled by Daniel and Gill with them readily accepting new members. As we are now a public group anyone can see what we do for fun on Thursdays, Sundays, and occasionally Saturdays. The other days we’ll leave to their imagination! The photographs are continually updated and show what a varied walks programme we have.

    The Cressbrook Dale Lava and Litton Tuff, between Longstone and Hucklow Edges, Derbyshire John Hunter and Richard Shaw Abstract: With only a small exposure near the head of its eponymous dale, the Cressbrook Dale Lava is the least exposed of the major lava flows interbedded within the Carboniferous platform- carbonate succession of the Derbyshire Peak District. It underlies a large area of the limestone plateau between Longstone Edge and the Eyam and Hucklow edges. The recent closure of all of the quarries and underground mines in this area provided a stimulus to locate and compile the existing subsurface information relating to the lava-field and, supplemented by airborne geophysical survey results, to use these data to interpret the buried volcanic landscape. The same sub-surface data-set is used to interpret the spatial distribution of the overlying Litton Tuff. Within the regional north-south crustal extension that survey indicate that the outcrops of igneous rocks in affected central and northern Britain on the north side the White Peak are only part of a much larger volcanic of the Wales-Brabant High during the early part of the field, most of which is concealed at depth beneath Carboniferous, a province of subsiding platforms, tilt- Millstone Grit and Coal Measures farther east. Because blocks and half-grabens developed beneath a shallow no large volcano structures have been discovered so continental sea. Intra-plate magmatism accompanied far, geological literature describes the lavas in the the lithospheric thinning, with basic igneous rocks White Peak as probably originating from four separate erupting at different times from a number of small, local centres, each being active in a different area at different volcanic centres scattered across a region extending times (Smith et al., 2005).

E. ROGERS Dept Earth Sciences ABSTRACT The Derbyshire Dome is thought to have been a stable uplifted area since at least Lower Carboniferous times. This project is principally concerned with four 30km seismic refraction lines which crossed the limestone outcrop of Derbyshire and N. Staffordshire in order to investigate the Dome's upper crustal structure, using quarry blasts as seismic sources. A time-term analysis of refracted arrival data defined basement structure more complicated than implied by the surface geology. The interpretation of these data was complicated by high (5.6-5.8km/s) velocity refractions from dolomitic horizons within the limestone sequence; the mean overburden velocity was determined to be about 5.2 km/s. The Dome could be divided into two pre-Carboniferous geological units separated approx- imately by the line of the NNW trending Bonsall Fault. To the north a broadly domal refractor of velocity 5.5-5.55km/s was mapped, and thought to correlate with both the shallow pre- Carboniferous volcanics encountered by the Woo Dale borehole and"the Ordovician shales encountered by the Eyam borehole below 1.8km of limestone. This refractor accordingly deepens beneath the Carboniferous sedimentary basins flanking the Dome. To the south of the Bonsall Fault zone, the Carbonifer- ous was found to be underlain by a refractor of velocity 5.63-5.7km/s, thought to be of Precambrian material similar to the rocks of Charnwood Forest, Leicestershire, some 40km south.

    Advisory Visit River Wye, Buxton Flyfishers Club, Derbyshire 17th March, 2009 1.0 Introduction This report is the output of a site visit undertaken by Tim Jacklin of the Wild Trout Trust on the River Wye near Buxton, Derbyshire on 17th March 2009. Comments in this report are based on observations on the day of the site visit and discussions with Paul Richardson of Buxton Flyfishers Club (BFFC), and David Percival, riverkeeper for Cressbrook & Litton Flyfishers Club (CLFFC) which controls the water immediately downstream of this reach. Normal convention is applied throughout the report with respect to bank identification, i.e. the banks are designated left hand bank (LHB) or right hand bank (RHB) whilst looking downstream. 2.0 Fishery Overview BFFC control the fishing on the River Wye between the footbridge at Blackwell Cottages (downstream limit, National Grid Reference SK 112727), and the bridge at the Devonshire Arms (Silverdale Plant Ltd.) (NGR SK 081724), a length of approximately 4 km. A schematic diagram of the river is shown in Figure 1. The water is owned by the Chatsworth Estate and leased to BFFC. The club has 24 members, and stocks 250 12-14” brown trout (diploid) per annum into the lower third of the fishery (downstream of Topley Pike car park). No stocking has taken place upstream of this point, nor any rainbow trout been introduced, for several years. The fishery contains excellent self- sustaining populations of brown and rainbow trout throughout, although it is felt that there is a predominance of small fish. The majority of BFFC members practise catch and release, and few fish are killed.
