SASTRY Zoological Survey of India, A & N Regional Station, Port Blair - 744 102 INTRODUCTION Coral reefs are an important ecosystem of the coastal environment. The reef ecosystem IS highly productive and provides substratum, shelter, food etc. to a variety of biota. Consequently a number of faunal and floral elements are attracted towards the reef ecosystem and are closely associated with each other to form a community. Thus the reefs are also rich in biodiversity. Among the coral reef associates echinoderms are a conspicuous element on account of their size, abundance and effect on the reef ecosystem including the corals. In spite of their importance in the coral reef ecosystem and its conservation, very few studies were made on the echinoderm associates of the coral reefs. Though there were some studies elsewhere, the information on reef­ associated echinoderms of Indian coast is meager and scattered (see Anon, 1995). Hence an attempt is made here to collate the scattered accounts and unpublished information available with Zoological Survey of India. Since the information is from several originals and quoted references and many are to be cited often, these are avoided in the text and a comprehensive bibliography is appended which served as source material and also provides additional references of details and further information. ECHINODERMS OF CORAL REEFS More than 200 species of echinoderms occur in the reef ecosystem of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. These belong to five extant classes with 30 to 60 species of each class.

Although Karens have not been classified as tribals in the recent tribal notification, they form a minor ethnic group that has apparently been living amidst the forests of Mayabunder tehsil since decades. They posses extensive indigenous knowledge of the plants which they use in their ethnomedicinal practices. Information about 24 selected medicinal plants, their local names, parts used, methods of application and medicinal uses are recorded. The medicinal utilities of these plants used by Karens have not been recorded earlier. Ethnobotanical information related to agriculture, house building, canoe making and traditional artifacts are also recorded. Abstract This paper is a report on the field observation undertaken through the DST project immediately after the occurrence of December 26, 2004 earthquake of magnitude >M 9.0 that occurred off the west coast of Sumatra Island of Indonesia with its epicenter located on the shallow depths in the Indian Ocean. The tsunamigenic earthquake that occurred on 26th December 2004 in the Indian Ocean caused severe damage and claimed many victims in some coastal villages through out the Islands. The main purpose of the survey was to assess morphological changes caused by the wave attacks and to evaluate the impact of the event on buildings, bridges and infrastructure. Attention was predominantly focused on the entire group of Andaman Islands such as Diglipur (North Andaman), Mayabunder, Baratang and Rangat (Middle Andaman) and Port Blair, Havelock and Hut Bay areas (South Andamans and Little Andamans), were examined for the most affected places in the islands. The most severe damage was observed at Hut Bay, in Little Andaman, where the buildings and coastal walls and the jetties were almost levelled by the violent waves. Most places were hit by these waves with documented wave height often exceeding 2-5 m according to the evidence by the local people and by filed investigations.

Under the Foreigners (Protected Areas) Order, 1958, all areas falling between the ‘Inner line’, as defined in the said order, and the International Border of the State have been declared as Protected Area. Protected Areas are located in the following States:- (i) Whole of Arunachal Pradesh (ii) Parts of Himachal Pradesh (iii) Parts of Jammu & Kashmir (iv) Whole of Manipur (v) Whole of Mizoram (vi) Whole of Nagaland (vii) Parts of Rajasthan (viii) Whole of Sikkim (partly in Protected Area and partly in Restricted Area) (ix) Parts of Uttarakhand As per instructions issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on 30.12.2010, the entire area of the States of Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland has been excluded from the Protected Area regime notified under the Foreigners (Protected Areas) Order 1958, initially for a period of one year w.e.f. 1.1.2011, which has been extended from time to time. This relaxation has been extended till 31.12.2022 subject to the following conditions:- (i) Citizens of Afghanistan, China and Pakistan and foreign nationals having their origin in these countries would continue to require prior approval of the Ministry of Home Affairs before their visit to the States of Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland. (ii) All foreigners visiting these States will register themselves with the Foreigners Registration Officer (FRO) of the State/District they visit within 24 hours of their arrival. Myanmar nationals visiting the States of Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland are also excluded from the requirement of obtaining a Protected Area Permit till 31.12.2022 subject to the following conditions:- (i) All such Myanmar nationals shall obtain a visa from the Indian Missions/ Posts abroad or e-Tourist Visa facility which has been made available to the nationals of Myanmar under the existing procedure.
