Riefenstahl Three Sesiidae from Anatolia, Turkey, are described as new to science. Synanthedon rubiana sp. nov. is closely related to Synanthedon spatenkai Gorbunov, 1991 but can easily be distinguished by the large ETA and the red-mixed anal tuft. It is known from different localities in Anatolia. The hostplant is unknown. Bembecia priesneri sp. nov. externally is close to Bembecia peterseni Spatenka, 1997 and Bembecia albanensis (Rebel, 1919) but by genitalic characters it appears to be closely related to Bembecia scopigera (Scopoli, 1783). It is known only from Cappadocia, Central Anatolia. The hostplant is an Ononis species. Chamaesphecia ruficoronata sp. nov. is known from a number of localities in East Anatolia but was confused with Chamaesphecia anthracias (Le Cerf, 1937). From this it can be easily separated by the yellow-red pericephalic hairs, the broad discal spots and the genitalia. The hostplant is supposed to be a Salvia species. • Insect Survey of Four Longleaf Pine Preserves
A SURVEY OF THE MOTHS, BUTTERFLIES, AND GRASSHOPPERS OF FOUR NATURE CONSERVANCY PRESERVES IN SOUTHEASTERN NORTH CAROLINA Stephen P. Hall and Dale F. Schweitzer November 15, 1993 ABSTRACT Moths, butterflies, and grasshoppers were surveyed within four longleaf pine preserves owned by the North Carolina Nature Conservancy during the growing season of 1991 and 1992. Over 7,000 specimens (either collected or seen in the field) were identified, representing 512 different species and 28 families. Forty-one of these we consider to be distinctive of the two fire- maintained communities principally under investigation, the longleaf pine savannas and flatwoods. An additional 14 species we consider distinctive of the pocosins that occur in close association with the savannas and flatwoods. Twenty nine species appear to be rare enough to be included on the list of elements monitored by the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program (eight others in this category have been reported from one of these sites, the Green Swamp, but were not observed in this study). Two of the moths collected, Spartiniphaga carterae and Agrotis buchholzi, are currently candidates for federal listing as Threatened or Endangered species. Another species, Hemipachnobia s. subporphyrea, appears to be endemic to North Carolina and should also be considered for federal candidate status. With few exceptions, even the species that seem to be most closely associated with savannas and flatwoods show few direct defenses against fire, the primary force responsible for maintaining these communities. Instead, the majority of these insects probably survive within this region due to their ability to rapidly re-colonize recently burned areas from small, well-dispersed refugia.

Despite the proximity of Sredna Gora Mountains to Sofia, the insect assemblages of this region are poorly studied. As a result of two studies carried out as a part of an Environmental Impact Assessment in the Natura 2000 Protected Areas: Sredna Gora and Popintsi, a rich diversity of insects was discovered, with 107 saproxylic and epigeobiont Coleoptera species and 355 Lepidoptera species recorded. This research was conducted during a short one-season field study in the surrounding areas of the town of Panagyurishte and Oborishte Village. Special attention was paid to protected species and their conservation status. Of the Coleoptera recorded, 22 species were of conservation significance. Forty-five Lepidoptera species of conservation importance were also recorded. KEY WORDS.WORDS. Journal of the Lepidopterists' Society 46(3), 1992, 220-232 TWO NEW SPECIES OF MOTHS (NOCTUIDAE: ACRONICTINAE, CUCULLIINAE) FROM MIDLAND UNITED STATES CHARLES y, COVELL JR. Department of Biology, University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky 40292 AND ERIC H. METZLER Ohio Department of Natural Resources, 1952 Belcher Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43224 ABSTRACT. Two new species of noctuid moths are described and illustrated. Ac ronicta heitzmani, new species, in the subfamily Acronictinae, is known from Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois and Ohio. Lithophane joannis, new species, in the subfamily Cucul Iiinae, is known from Ohio, Kentucky, and Michigan. Both species are compared with morphologically similar congeners. Additional key words: Acronicta heitzmani, Lithophane joannis, faunal survey. Since their origins, the Ohio Lepidopterists and the Society of Ken tucky Lepidopterists ha ve promoted regional surveys of the Lepidoptera fauna of midland United States. These efforts have resulted in numerous new records and range extensions and in the discovery of several new taxa, The purpose of this paper is to describe and illustrate two recently discovered species of the family Noctuidae. Both apparently are re stricted to midland United States, Acronicta heitzmani, new species, is known from Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois and Ohio. Lithophane joan nis, new species, is known from Ohio, Kentucky, and Michigan. Both species are morphologically distinct from, and sympatric with, con geners, In 1964, J. R, Heitzman collected a series of an unusual Acronicta species in Missouri. The specimens superficially resembled A. fragilis (Guenee) which was not recorded from Missouri. In 1967, the first author collected a specimen of the same species in Kentucky; the second author took the first Ohio specimen in 1975, The specimens were de termined as a possibly undescribed species near A.

Seasonal distribution of moths of the Koakoland (Mopane) Savanna in Ogongo, northern Namibia Grzegorz KOPIJ Department of Wildlife Management, University of Namibia, Katima Mulilio Campus, Private Bag 1096, Katima Mulilo, Namibia; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: During the years 2011–2013, moths were collected in Koakoland (Mopane) Savanna in the Cuvelai Drainage System, Ovamboland, northern Namibia. In total, 77 species from 13 families have been identified. Their seasonal occurrence in this habitat was also investigated, with most species recorded in wet season between September and April, but with clear peak in February and March. The family Noctuidae was by far the most speciose (38 recorded species), followed by Crambidae (8 spp.), Sphingidae (6 spp.) and Arctiidae (4 spp.). All other families were represented by 1–3 species. For each species listed date of collection is given, and data on its global distribution. Key words: Lepidoptera, check-list, biodiversity, distribution, moths, Ovamboland INTRODUCTION According to recent quite precise estimate, there are 15 5181 species, 16 650 genera and 121 families of Lepidoptera worldwide (Pouge 2009). Lepidoptera fauna of Namibia has recently attracted attention of European entomologists. However, thorough surveys were conducted hitherto in a few areas only, such as Brandberg and Hobatere. The northern regions of the country were especially badly neglected. In southern Africa (south of Zambezi and Kunene Rivers) – 8 511 species, 2 368 genera and 89 families were recently catalogued (Vári et al.

Johnson3 ABSTRACT A total of 1284 species representing the thirteen families comprising the present checklist have been documented in Wisconsin, including 293 species of Geometridae, 252 species of Erebidae and 584 species of Noctuidae. Distributions are summarized using the six major natural divisions of Wisconsin; adult flight periods and statuses within the state are also reported. Examples of Wisconsin’s diverse native habitat types in each of the natural divisions have been systematically inventoried, and species associated with specialized habitats such as peatland, prairie, barrens and dunes are listed. INTRODUCTION This list is an updated version of the Wisconsin moth checklist by Ferge & Balogh (2000). A considerable amount of new information from has been accumulated in the 18 years since that initial publication. Over sixty species have been added, bringing the total to 1284 in the thirteen families comprising this checklist. These families are estimated to comprise approximately one-half of the state’s total moth fauna. Historical records of Wisconsin moths are relatively meager. Checklists including Wisconsin moths were compiled by Hoy (1883), Rauterberg (1900), Fernekes (1906) and Muttkowski (1907). Hoy's list was restricted to Racine County, the others to Milwaukee County. Records from these publications are of historical interest, but unfortunately few verifiable voucher specimens exist. Unverifiable identifications and minimal label data associated with older museum specimens limit the usefulness of this information. Covell (1970) compiled records of 222 Geometridae species, based on his examination of specimens representing at least 30 counties.

It is open with few trees, and the vegetation is dominated by dwarf-shrubs growing on nutrient-poor soils. Dry heaths with Heather Calluna vulgaris and wet heaths with Bell Heather Erica tetralix are common vegetation communities in the heathland, and they often form mosaics. The heathland landscape is highly threatened, with large substantial areal losses of 95% in Sweden since the 1800s. Heathland supports around 200 red-listed species, including plants, insects, birds and reptiles.
