    Online Appendix for Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue (2014) Some Principles of the Use of Macro-Areas Language Dynamics & Change Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue The following document lists the languages of the world and their as- signment to the macro-areas described in the main body of the paper as well as the WALS macro-area for languages featured in the WALS 2005 edi- tion. 7160 languages are included, which represent all languages for which we had coordinates available1. Every language is given with its ISO-639-3 code (if it has one) for proper identification. The mapping between WALS languages and ISO-codes was done by using the mapping downloadable from the 2011 online WALS edition2 (because a number of errors in the mapping were corrected for the 2011 edition). 38 WALS languages are not given an ISO-code in the 2011 mapping, 36 of these have been assigned their appropri- ate iso-code based on the sources the WALS lists for the respective language. This was not possible for Tasmanian (WALS-code: tsm) because the WALS mixes data from very different Tasmanian languages and for Kualan (WALS- code: kua) because no source is given. 17 WALS-languages were assigned ISO-codes which have subsequently been retired { these have been assigned their appropriate updated ISO-code. In many cases, a WALS-language is mapped to several ISO-codes.     PREFACE Since the end of the civil war, Mozambique has seen a high growth rate of 7% to 8% annually. On the other hand, GDP per capita is still at a low level among developing countries. The government announced the importance it places on economic development to achieve poverty alleviation and to resolve the development gap between southern and northern regions of the country in the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PARPA II). In the meantime, as neighboring countries depend on Mozambique for access to the ocean, it is placed in quite an important position geographically. Natural resources have great potential for development, and several big investments have been introduced in this field. From the viewpoint of domestic industries, there exists much potential in agriculture, tourism, and other sectors. Despite the potential, however, industries—especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which will be the driving force of the economy in the long term—have faced constraints, such as in terms of management skills, finance, and human resources. In line with these conditions, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) planned and conducted this study in order to consider future cooperation in economic development. The establishment’s attempt to salvage neoliberalism with another round of austerity reforms has been met with a backlash from the opposite ends of the ideological spectrum: the radical left and the ultra-right. From Narendra Modi’s electoral victory in India in 2014 through Donald Trump’s presidential triumph in the 2016 US elections, populist right movements have increasingly become influential in the UK (UKIP in the Brexit referendum), France (Marine Le Pens and her Front National), Greece (Golden Down), Germany (Alternative für Deutschland) to mention only a few. On the other hand, SYRIZA’s sweeping electoral victory in Greece (even though the new regime would later be forced disown its socialist commitment) to the rise of PODEMOS in Italy, Bernie Sanders in the US, Jeremy Corbyn in the UK, and Jean-Luc Mélenchon in France marked a new wave of radical leftwing politics as a counter to both the neoliberal establishment and the surging far right movement.

    AAP 60 (1999) 147-160 SWAHILI TECHNICAL TERMINOLOGY: PROBLEMS OF DEVELOPMENT AND USAGE IN KENYA1 KITULA KING'EI Introduction It is a fact that modem science and technology from the west has reached Afiica through European languages. Historically, these languages have also served as the vehicles of formal education in Africa to the exclusion of Swahili and other local languages Therefore, as Mazrui & Mazrui ( 1995) note, the colonial language and educational policy in Africa , fell far short of giving Kiswahili a chance to evolve and develop into a language of scientific discourse and analysis" (p. 25}. The deficiency of Afiican languages such as Swahili in scientific and technical registers is both artificial and historically understandable Secondly, it is easily remediable given that the basic core of the said vocabulary is shared and international in nature (Alexandrie, 1961 ). Therefore such a deficiency should present no barrier to Swahili serving as a medium of instruction in higher education However, the problem of lack of Swahili technical terminology is also felt by other professional language users apart fiom lecturers or teachers .. For instance, recently, a broadcaster fiiend of mine ,challenged" me to provide him with the ,accepted" Swahili technical terminology that aptly translates the following concepts from the English language: 2000 year bug solicitor-general Islamic fundamentalist process 2000 year compliant horticulture vigilante groups anthrax infrastructure mortuary condoms water hyacinth attorney-general war victims
