Glacier National Park is open year- round. Most visitor services and facilities are open May through September; however, autumn/winter/spring non- motorized recreation opportunities and primitive camping are available year round. Visitor services and amenities are available year round in gateway communities. 2. The Going- to- the- Sun Road (Sun Road), the only American roadway designated both a National Historic Landmark and a National Civil Engineering Landmark, began a multi- year rehabilitation in 2007. Accelerated night work and shoulder season work (after mid- September and before mid- June) cause short- term impacts to the smallest numbers of park visitors. 3. Traffic delay schedule for the rehabilitation work is as follows: • Throughout weekends and Monday through Thursday from 6am to 10pm – expect several short delays for a maximum total of 30 minutes. • Sunday night through Thursday night from 10pm to 6am – expect up to 4 hour delays. • For updates tune your radio to 1610 AM or call 5- 1- 1 anywhere in Montana and select option ‘5.’ 4. Schedules for the multi- year rehabilitation call for opening lower elevations in the spring as weather and work permits and opening the alpine section over Logan Pass from mid- June to mid- September. In 2008, weather permitting; the entire Sun Road will be open between Friday, June 13 and Sunday, September 14. 5. Torrential rainfall in November 2006 created substantial road damage. Stabilization occurred in spring 2007 to allow for a July 1, 2007, Sun Road opening. A temporary two- lane bridge near the east tunnel was removed and repaired in fall 2007. Remaining permanent storm repairs will be completed in fall 2008 and fall 2009. 6. More information about the Sun Road rehabilitation project and other visitor services is available at www.nps.gov/glac or www.GTSRProject.com. To receive updates about the Sun Road project via email, please send an email message to [email protected]. 7. A new Sun Road transit system began in July 2007. In 2008, the shuttles operate July 3 through September 1 (Labor Day) from 7am to7 pm. The last shuttle buses leave Logan Pass at 7pm for both Apgar Transit Center and St. Mary Visitor Center. (See map on reverse): • Orange Route (Apgar Transit Center to Logan Pass) • Blue Route (Apgar Transit Center to Avalanche ) • Red Route (St. Mary Visitor Center to Logan Pass) • Green Route (Lake McDonald Lodge to Logan Pass) 8. The optional Sun Road transit system is FREE once park entrance fees are collected. Entrance fees allow unlimited travel and access to 17 stops on 4 different routes. An east side hiker shuttle is available for a fee. 9. Guided park tours are available from park concessioners via boat, bus, foot and horse. For details, visit www.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/outdooractivities.htm . 10. The new Apgar Transit Center and newly- remodeled St. Mary Visitor Center offer transit information and other park displays and exhibits for trip planning.
