December 1989, Pp, 164-168 Dimensional characteristics of jute and jute-rayon blended fabrics crosslinked with DMDHEU r-N'C~~m &tA KtMukherjee Applied Chemistry Division, Indian Jute Industries' Research Association,Calcutta 700 OXS;~" ~ , Received 24 July 1989; accepted 4 September 1989 Jute and jute-rayon blended fabrics were crosslinked with 1,3-dimethylol-4,5-dihydroxyethylene urea (DMDHEU) using metal salt catalysts [MgClz, ZnClz and Zn(NOJ}21, acid catalysts (HCl and CH3COOH) and mixed catalysts (MgCl/HCl and MgCl/CHJCOOH) by the usual pad-dry-cure method and their dimensional characteristics assessed. The crosslinking treatment reduced the % area shrinkage, i.e. improved the dimensional stability of jute and jute-rayon blended fabrics signifi- cantly. The improved dimensional behaviour of treated fabrics has been attributed to the reduction in the elastic property of amorphous regions of cellulose structure. In this paper, several kinds of composites with natural fiber mat as reinforcement and unsaturated polyester(UP) as matrix, including jute/UP, kenaf/UP and bamboo/UP, were fabricated by hand lay-up and compression molding methods. Their tensile properties were tested and discussed, as well as the low cycle fatigue(LCF) behavior of three composites, which was compared with glass/UP. Chowdhury Department of Genetic and Plant Breeding, Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Dumki, Patuakhali-8602, Bangladesh *Corresponding author and Email: [email protected] Received: 04 April 2015 Accepted: 12 December 2015 Abstract Ten white jute genotypes (Corchorus capsularis L.) were evaluated across three different locations including saline and non-saline soils of Bangladesh during 2014 to assess genotype × environment interaction and stability for plant height, base diameter, fresh weight with leaves, dry stick weight and dry fiber weight. Additive Main Effect Multiplicative Interaction (AMMI) model was used to assess the additive and multiplicative interaction of jute genotypes for these characters across three environments. Significant variations in genotype environment interaction were observed for all characters except plant height and base diameter. Based on stability parameters bi 1 and bi o, the genotype C-3465 showed stability for plant height, D-154 for base diameter and fresh weight with leaves. The genotypes C-2753 showed stability for fresh weight with leaves, without leaves and dry stick weight, CVL-1 for fresh weight without leaves, C-2760 for fresh weight with leaves, without leaves and for dry fiber weight across saline and non- saline area. Heritability in broad sense was quite high for all characters (85-90%) except plant height (17%) indicating less environmental fluctuation. -

Pottery (70.39) Pottery, which appeared in Iran early in the Neolithic Age, provided a cheap substitute for carefully ground stone vessels and less permanent wood and skin containers. It satisfied the need for a variety of such containers in shapes ranging from drinking cups to cooking pots and storage jars. Many of the vessels excavated from prehistoric sites are, therefore, utilitarian in nature with thick walls and little or no decoration. From the beginning, however, the Iranian potter produced some decorated wares. Soon a whole range of fine pottery developed, with local styles of decoration based on the ingenuity of the potter, who was inspired by materials and themes already established in his culture and by the natural forms of the surrounding countryside. Chalcolithic (transition from stone to metal) painted wares developed on the Iranian plateau and in the western mountains. The deep bowl from Ismailabad with burnished red slip and geometric motifs provides an example of early painted ware. Typical of this stage are simple geometric patterns such as lozenges, hatching, zigzags, and triangles. The pottery is usually red or buff; the designs are black. In the 4th millennium, animal forms are more frequently found combined with a greater variety of geometric motifs. This pottery is now sometimes made on the wheel. The bowl from Tepe Giyan in western Iran is an example of later pottery, dating to the second half of the 3rd millennium B.C.
