The above proverb establishes the rights and authority of Tainui iwi to its history and future. Translated as “Waikato of a hundred chiefs, at every bend a chief, at every bend a chief”, it tells of the magnitude of the significant peoples on every bend of its great banks.1 Many of those peoples include Tainui women whose stories of leadership, strength, status and connection with the Waikato River have been diminished or written out of the histories that we currently hold of Tainui. Instead, Tainui men have often been valorised and their roles inflated at the expense of Tainui women, who have been politically, socially, sexually, and economically downplayed. In this study therefore I honour the traditional oral knowledges of a small selection of our tīpuna whaea. I make connections with Tainui born women and those women who married into Tainui. The recognition of traditional oral knowledges is important because without those histories, remembrances and reconnections of our pasts, the strengths and identities which are Tainui women will be lost. Stereotypical male narrative has enforced a female passivity where women’s strengths and importance have become lesser known. -

Through their conservation, education, horticulture, and research activities, botanic gardens inspire millions of people each year about the importance of plants. As genetically diverse collections are developed, our collective global safety net against plant extinction is strengthened. --------- -- ---------· 4 CHAPTER 1 REVIEW OF SELECTED LITERATURE AND EPIPHYTE CLASSIFICATION 1.1 Review of Selected, Relevant Literature (p. 5) Several important aspects of epiphyte biology and ecology that are not investigated as part of this work, are reviewed, particularly those published on more. recently. 1.2 Epiphyte Classification and Terminology (p.11) is reviewed and the system used here is outlined and defined. A glossary of terms, as used here, is given. 5 1.1 Review of Selected, Relevant Li.terature Since the main works of Schimper were published (1884, 1888, 1898), particularly Die Epiphytische Vegetation Amerikas (1888), many workers have written on many aspects of epiphyte biology and ecology. Most of these will not be reviewed here because they are not directly relevant to the present study or have been effectively reviewed by others. A few papers that are keys to the earlier literature will be mentioned but most of the review will deal with topics that have not been reviewed separately within the chapters of this project where relevant (i.e. epiphyte classification and terminology, aspects of epiphyte synecology and CAM in the epiphyt~s). Reviewed here are some special problems of epiphytes, particularly water and mineral availability, uptake and cycling, general nutritional strategies and matters related to these. Also, all Australian works of any substance on vascular epiphytes are briefly discussed. some key earlier papers include that of Pessin (1925), an autecology of an epiphytic fern, which investigated a number of factors specifically related to epiphytism; he also reviewed more than 20 papers written from the early 1880 1 s onwards. -

Under such circumstances, it may be more appropriate to consider species groups or populations as evolutionarily significant units (ESUs). A population genomic approach was em- ployed to investigate the diversity within and among closely related species to create a more robust, lineage-specific conservation strategy for a nationally endangered terrestrial orchid and its relatives from south-eastern Australia. Methods Four putative species were sampled from a total of 16 populations in the Victorian Volcanic Plain (VVP) bioregion and one population of a sub-alpine outgroup in south-eastern Australia. Morphological measure- ments were taken in situ along with leaf material for genotyping by sequencing (GBS) and microsatellite analyses. Key Results Species could not be differentiated using morphological measurements. -
Wa Orchid Spectacular 2017 Four Day Tour
WA ORCHID SPECTACULAR 2017 FOUR DAY TOUR Tour 1: 7–10 August 2017 Tour 2: 8–11 August 2017 Notes for attendees The four day tour will comprise two identical trips staged one day apart. The first trip departs from Perth on Monday 7 August and will be led by Andrew Brown author of ‘Orchids of Western Australia’ and ‘Field Guide to the Orchids of Western Australia’. The second trip departs on Tuesday 8 August and will be led by Garry Brockman co-author of ‘Field Guide to the Orchids of Western Australia’. The daily itinerary is tentative and may be subject to change. If we hear of particularly good orchid populations that are not currently included it may be modified to incorporate them. Some currently listed locations may also be removed if it is found they do not contain good orchid populations this year. It is anticipated, however, that most locations listed here will be visited during the trip. We will do four planned orchid stops most days but, if time permits, will also do one or two additional opportunistic stops. The amount of time spent at each planned orchid stop will vary depending on the number of orchids seen but will usually be around 45 minutes. Opportunistic stops will generally be around 30 minutes. We will also have two comfort stops each day, some of these coinciding with orchid stops. Orchids listed for each site are the ones that we are most likely to see but are not guaranteed with species/numbers seen dependent on seasonal influences in 2017. -

It has now reached the point where the number of plants brought in each month for sale has become unmanageable. Many of the plants are not sold and have to be returned to the owner sometimes in a damaged condition due to the rough handling received in the melee at the table. -
