He is a mischievous mouse who gets into trouble easily. He is also very imaginative and quick enough to solve the problems. He typically wears red shorts, white gloves and large yellow shoes, and has only four fingers on each hand. Mickey was initially barefooted and bare handed. His gloves were introduced in the cartoon 'The Opry House', in 1929. He went on to wear them in most of his subsequent appearances until today. Mickey’s Creation Mickey Mouse was created by animators Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks at the Walt Disney Studios, in 1928, as a replacement for 'Oswald, the Lucky Rabbit', an earlier character created by Walt Disney. He came up with the idea of Mickey Mouse while on a train from New York to Hollywood. Mickey Mouse Pick of the Month Mickey’s Journey Mickey first featured in a silent short titled 'Plane Crazy'. He later made his appearance in the short film titled 'Steamboat Willie', which was one of the first cartoons with sound. It was released on 18 November, 1928. 'Steamboat' Not Actually the First Mickey Film 'Hot Dog!'
Mickey isn’t just the most famous mouse on the planet, he’s history’s most iconic cartoon character who also happens to moonlight as the most recognized corporate identity of any com- pany in the world. He’s literally the face of one of the biggest media companies ever. Those are a whole lot of roles for a rodent to fill. Even if you’re anthropomorphic. He’s also a birthday boy as Walt Disney’s most beloved creation turns 90 today. Here’s a look at a few of the things you might not know about Mickey ... HAPPY 90TH DISNEY A mouse by any other name ... Walt Disney initially named Mickey Mouse “Mortimer,” until Walt’s wife, MICKEY MOUSE Lillian, suggested “Mickey” was a better choice. ‘Steamboat’ not actually the first Mickey film “Steamboat Willie” was “Plane Crazy” released on this day in 1928 as the first short film starring Mickey Mouse, but it was actually the third created. In celebration of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida, here is a look back at some of the finest moments for these true originals, and the man who created them. It’s a good reminder that, as Walt Disney said, “It was all started by a mouse.” Iconic On-Screen Moments Walt Disney arrived in Hollywood in August 1923 and founded Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio in October of that year. Just five years later, Mickey Mouse debuted on the silver screen and went on to appear in a series of 130 animated short films from 1928 to 1953, with four additional shorts released between 1983 and 2013. Since 1955, he has been a frequent presence on television, too. Following are some notable highlights of Mickey’s onscreen career: “Steamboat Willie” (1928) – The first Mickey Mouse cartoon released (although it was the third Mickey cartoon made) was also the first animated short with synchronized sound. Mickey is a mischievous deckhand on a riverboat under the command of the tyrannical Captain Pete; Minnie is a tardy passenger who joins Mickey in music-making. “The Karnival Kid” (1929) – The first cartoon where Mickey speaks (“Hot dogs! All of them are based on special circumstances which are indispensable to understand the beginning, development, and success of this legendary figure. In Chapter One, there is a clear explanation of Disney´s genealogy from 1824 until 1903, his family, education, jobs, voluntary activities, personal life, some exemplifications of his first attempts at artistic talent, and his death. In Chapter Two, there are some definitions of animated cartoons. We analyze the first optical toys as a great asset in the progress of cartoons. Additionally, there is a description of some Disney´s contributions to motion pictures. In Chapter Three, there is a description of Disney´s imagination which is based on folk literature. There is an analysis relied on some of the most important Disney´s creations. In Chapter Four, there is a description of the establishment of the Disney Company in Hollywood. "I Might be a Duck, but I'm Human": An Analysis of Clothing in Disney Cartoons Luke Baldwin Dubin JAMES A GIBSON LIBRARY BROCK UNIVERSiTY , r'"i I~" YES' < ' ¥-"'J; ''<'11 r ST.• CJ\THAR,.. ...... ..!. v ,t_#.", ~ Thesis completed in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the Interdisciplinary MA Program in Popular Culture Brock University © 2008 Dubin i Abstract Mickey Mouse, one of the world's most recognizable cartoon characters, did not wear a shirt in his earliest incarnation in theatrical shorts and, for many years, Donald Duck did not wear pants and still rarely does so. Especially when one considers the era in which these figures were first created by the Walt Disney Studio, in the 1920s and 1930s, why are they portrayed without full clothing? The obvious answer, of course, is that they are animals, and animals do not wear clothes. But these are no ordinary animals: in most cases, they do wear clothing - some clothing, at least - and they walk on two legs, talk in a more or less intelligible fashion, and display a number of other anthropomorphic traits. If they are essentially animals, why do they wear clothing at all? On the other hand, if these characters are more human than animal, as suggested by other behavioral traits - they walk, talk, work, read, and so on - why are they not more often fully clothed? To answer these questions I undertook three major research strategies used to gather evidence: interpretive textual analysis of 321 cartoons; secondary analysis of interviews conducted with the animators who created the Disney characters; and historical and archival research on the Disney Company and on the times and context in which it functioned.
