Introduction The Master Transportation Plan (MTP) Goals and Policies document specifies three general policies that form the foundation of the MTP and, therefore, transportation in Arlington in the years ahead: integrating transportation with land use, supporting the design and operation of complete streets, and managing travel demand and transportation systems. Between 2015 and 2030, Arlington County population is projected to increase 25 percent and employment is projected to increase by 20 percent. Increasing and enhancing transit options is a prerequisite to accommodating continued long-term growth in Arlington’s population and business activity. As noted in the MTP, the integration of transit and land use, the organization of community development around high quality transit service, has been a foundational policy for the Metrorail corridors in the County for more than 30 years.

  • NVTA Advances Regional Transportation Projects
MEDIA RELEASE For Immediate Release October 14, 2014 Contact: Kala Quintana 703-642-4651 [email protected] THE NORTHERN VIRGINIA TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY ADVANCES REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION PROJECTS – $ 94.3M TO BE DISTRIBUTED Over Half of All Approved FY2014 Projects Have Been Funded NORTHERN VIRGINIA—As of October 2014 the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) has advanced funding for 18 projects – over 50% of the projects in the overall FY2014 program -- throughout Northern Virginia totaling $94,312,275. This milestone affirms the Authority’s promise to taxpayers that funds would begin flowing to transportation projects as quickly as possible once the project agreements were approved. The 18 NVTA funded projects include a mix of regional, congestion-reducing, road and transit investments in Arlington, Loudoun and Prince William counties; the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church and the town of Herndon. The Authority has also officially closed out its first project - funding a new bus for the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission’s OmniRide inaugural Gainesville to Haymarket service. (A complete chart of NVTA advanced projects and funding amounts to date below). Northern Virginia Transportation Authority Chairman Marty Nohe stated, “As we promised from day one, the Authority is advancing regional projects as quickly as possible to help achieve real congestion relief in Northern Virginia. We are committed to fulfilling our promise to Northern Virginians to work together as a region to prioritize our transportation projects in a way that provides the best return on our investments. Sometimes it’s not about the ‘mega’ projects, but about smartly planned, strategic projects that eliminate choke points on our roadways or provide alternatives for commuters instead of driving alone.” Within the next two months additional projects will be advanced including the widening of Route 28 in Fairfax County.

  • Condition of Existing Services and Future Trends Report
Condition of Existing Services and Future Trends Summary August 2017 For the Greater Prince William area’s growing and diverse population and business community, PRTC is the organization that delivers a multimodal transportation system, connecting the area’s network of activity centers to one another and to the larger region in a way that makes our area the community of choice. Page 1 INTRODUCTION This technical memorandum provides an overview of the condition of existing transit and transportation demand management (TDM) services that are offered or overseen by PRTC. In addition to feedback received from the public, the Executive Steering Committee, and other stakeholders, the analyses and key messages presented here will be critical in shaping the recommendations for Phase II of the Strategic Plan. This report is intended as an addendum to The Strategic Plan, as supplemental, more-detailed information. The report is structured around two main sections: transit and TDM. Each section provides an overview of the current services, summarizes key messages, and provides more detailed analysis supporting those key messages. TRANSIT Analysis Overview A detailed analysis of PRTC data was conducted regarding current and historical performance at both the system and route levels. Performance rarely comes down to a single factor and more often is explained through a combination of variables (schedule, service quality, transit subsidy policy, price of gasoline, employment rates, land use density, roadway congestion, etc.). To support the analysis, an examination of local peer systems was conducted using NTD data to validate trends. The sections that follow present an overview of PRTC’s existing conditions and key messages derived from the analysis.

  • Transit Performance in the I-66 Inside the Beltway Corridor
TRANSIT PERFORMANCE IN THE I-66 INSIDE THE BELTWAY CORRIDOR June 2018 This report summarizes the performance of public transportation systems serving the I-66 inside the Beltway corridor in Northern Virginia. In December 2017, the Commonwealth of Virginia instituted dynamic tolling during peak periods along I-66, from the Capital Beltway in Fairfax County to the Roosevelt Bridge leading to Washington, D.C. This stretch of roadway was previously a restricted facility, limited to high occupancy vehicles (HOV2) during commuting hours, inbound (east) in the morning and outboard (west) in the afternoon. Upon implementation of the dynamic tolling, the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission (NVTC) initiated the I-66 Commuter Choice program, a multimodal grant program that funds transit and transportation demand management services to complement the tolling in order to move more people through the corridor during peak periods. As part of this effort, NVTC began tracking the overall transit performance changes along this corridor. OVERVIEW Public transportation plays an important role along the I-66 inside the Beltway corridor, transporting approximately 40 percent of commuters during peak periods. That’s a more than three times greater transit mode share than Northern Virginia as a whole. Public transit ridership along the corridor generally follows regional and national public transportation ridership trends, which have showed some decline. In contrast to this trend, express buses, some of which are funded by the I-66 Commuter Choice program, experienced strong and growing ridership, while demonstrating faster and more reliable running times due to I-66 tolling and resulting traffic condition improvements. KEY FINDINGS • Public transportation plays a vital role along the I-66 corridor.
