PEER REVIEWED Abstract In Australia, women from non–English-speaking backgrounds participate less frequently in breast cancer screening than English-speaking women, and Chinese immigrant women are 50% less likely to participate in breast examinations than Australian-born women. Chinese-born Australians comprise 10% of the overseas-born Australian population, and the immigrant Chinese population in Australia is rapidly increasing. We report on the strategies used in a pilot breast health promotion program, Living with Healthy Breasts, aimed at Cantonese-speaking adult immigrant women in Sydney, Australia. The program consisted of a 1-day education session and a 2-hour follow-up session.     Intersectionality Matters: A guide to engaging immigrant and refugee communities to prevent violence against women 1 Acknowledgement MCWH acknowledges and pays respect to the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation, on whose land this guide was written. Aboriginal sovereignty was never ceded. We recognise that as immigrants to this country, we benefit from the colonisation of the land now called Australia and have a shared responsibility to acknowledge the harm done to its first peoples and work towards respect and recognition. We recognise that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are leaders in working to prevent the disproportionate levels of violence enacted against them, their children and their families. We also acknowledge and celebrate that intersectional theory has largely emerged from black and indigenous feminist activism and expertise in the United States and around the world, including Australia. We pay our respects to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their ancestors and elders, both past and present and acknowledge their continuing connection to land, sea and community. We hope our work contributes to the wider project of respect and recognition between cultures in Australia. Introduction Violence against women and girls occurs in all countries and it cuts across all social differences such as race, ethnicity, sexuality, socio- economic class, ability and faith. There may be differences in the types of violence that women and girls experience, but all forms of violence are unacceptable. Australia’s National Framework for Prevention, Change the Story, shows that by working together towards gender equality, we can address the key drivers of violence against women.

Hai-Chuan Chou ABSTRACT This study compares recruitment and career paths of women politicians in Australia and Taiwan. It is based on the analysis of biographical materials and interviews with women MPs. The thesis argues that access of women to political elites is influenced by social dynamics, especially the pattern of modernisation. Different paths of modernisation — 'even' in Australia and 'uneven' in Taiwan — are associated with different configurations of gender-related political opportunities and resources, and with different political career paths. Political opportunities concern the overall access to social statuses and crucial pools of 'political eligibles'; political resources refer to those characteristics which are pivotal to securing promotion to elite positions. 'Even' modernisation in Australia is marked by economic, political and sociocultural modernisation, growing individualism and equalisation of political opportunities for women. However, such modernisation does not necessarily give women equal access to political resources, which tend to be concentrated in political organisations.

    Women and the Right to Vote “A woman is as much out of place at the polling booths as a man is in the kitchen.” –The Advertiser editorial (Adelaide), 1891. Women in Australia were not permitted to vote in federal elections until 1902 – that’s only a little more than 100 years ago! In the 1880s Australian Suffragettes began fighting for the right to vote. Their cam- paign for suffrage (the right to vote) included public protests - a popular form of democratic dissent. When the movement started, it was widely thought that only men should participate in politics and that women and children should not. Despite public resistance, from the 1880s to 1890s, every Australian State and Territory had at least one Suffragette society. They held debates and public meetings, pub- lished leaflets and organised letter-writing campaigns. They argued that a government that represent- ed the people should also include the views and voices of women, as laws affect both women and men. Politics and Australian Women in the late 1800s The traditional role of women in society was primarily as mothers and wives and their domain was almost exclusively limited to the household. However, by the late 1800s, women made up 20% of the overall Australian workforce and 30-40% of the urban workforce. The growth in nursing and teaching jobs created new opportunities for women. These types of jobs were considered ’respectable’ for wom- en outside of the home. Eventually, society’s understanding of the role of women began to change. However, many men and some women continued to oppose the Suffragettes’ demand for voting rights for women, claiming that women were too ‘emotional and consumed with trivial matters’ to be able to make important political decisions.
