THE AUTHORS Elga Adreeva I’m Elga Andreeva from Bulgaria. I graduated in Journalism and European Studies. I’m particularly interested in photojournalism, because I consider images to have the strong power to quickly transfer a message and influence people’s actions. I’m also involved in theatre, music and art. I believe the main goal of backpack journalism is to encourage young people to be objective, critical and active par- ticipants in shaping their environment and provide them with the tools to do so. It gives them the freedom to go beyond theboundaries of the national mindset and be global citizens of the world. Anca Ardeleanu I’m Anca Ardeleanu from Romania from Young Partners for Civil Society Develop- ment Association. I work as a translator and I’m a student at Masters in Intercultur- al Management. I think backpack journalism is a great way to get people involved in the life of communities, to participate in an active manner, through media, and to gain new skills in journalism. As a mentor in the project my advice to young people is that they have confidence in themselves,and take more initiative for get- ting involved in the local community. Peter Černuta I’m Peter Cernuta from Slovenia. I graduated in English and journalism and now I’m a postgraduate student in financial journalism in Denmark. I have four years experience working at Slovenian Press Agency. My view of backpack journalism is to empower people to get their message across and transform the way democracy and media works. I believe people should never stop broadening their horizons. Adél Hercse I’m Adél Hercsel from Hungary with Keret Association. I’m studying russian filology at the university and I’m a freelancer journalist and critic. In general I’m interested in culture, literature, arts, theater and politics. In my opinion backpack journalism opens the door to such realms of possibility as few can have. The freedom you come into gives you great mobility. My advice to the young people is to open your eyes and be critical, the rest comes from there. Blaž Hostnik I’m a computer engineer and a youth worker - an impossible match as it seems, but I’m a proof that works. I use multimedia as a glue between this two fields: my engineering skills are indispensable when it comes to working with equipment or helping others who work with it, while multimedia is very motivational and creativeness-opening for youth. I obtained the knowledge in a practical way from the best in this field and I have great abilities of passing this knowledge to the others in clear and simple way. I work as a head of the Multimedia centre at the Social academy. Martina Ilišinović I’m Martina Ilišinović from Slovenia with Socialna Akademija. I am studying cultural mediation in tourism. Generally I’m interested in languages, travelling and meeting new people, event management and also journalism. To me the main message of backpack journalism is to be active in the society. With just a little basic knowledge you can express your opinion and make a difference. Cosmin Ionita I’m Cosmin Ionita from Romania and I represent Young Partners for Civil Society Development Association. I’m studying International Relations and I’m a a vol- unteer for two youth associations. Backback journalism brought for me a great method that I already use and I feel cool with it. It’s interactive, interesting and in the end you can get a lot of fun. Furthermore I would like to believe that the back- pack journalism will become a wide-spread manner for representing the world. It’s trumendously important because it gives to the people the capability to show everything as they see and not how it’s shown to them. Darek Jedzok My name is Darek Jedzok and I came from the Czech Republic with Petrklic Help. I studied ethnology and cultural anthropology, now I work as a translator from Czech to Polish and vice versa and as a freelancer journalist. I think that Backpack Journalism Project creates a great opportunity to learn most of the necessary jour- nalistic skills to express your thoughts and share information outside commercial media. What would be my advice for young journalists? “Subjectivity is objective. Keep your mind open and be tolerant!” Petr Kantor I’m Peter Kantor from Czech Republic. I’m a board member of Petrklíč help non-profit organization. I have expertise in communications, trainings, youth team work and international relations. I teach at Ostrava University and work as a consultant for the European program “Youth in Action”. I’m also working as a journalist. In my opinion the Backpack Journalism Project is very good because it gives to young people effec- tive tools to reflect public life in their place. The main message of the project is that everyone can be a journalist and can contribute his or her comments on daily city life. Anna Krężelok I’m Anna Krężelok from Polish Association Serfenta. I work as Spanish teacher and I also organize exhibitions and workshops. I think the main message of the Backpack Journalism Projekt is to teach young journalists to be together in the society and to speak aloud. I suggest to the young people that they should keep their eyes open and take care. Peter Lah I teach communication, journalism and media at all levels, from basics to university. On the practical field, I write for several Slovenian newspapers, including Finance, Casnik.si, and Družina. Humans shape their world through mutual interaction and communication. Therefore, it is essential for them to learn to communicate well, not only to get their ideas and experiences across, but to build a shared world, a com- munity characterized by mutual understanding and the ethics of care. Szamosi László I’m László Szamosi from Hungary with Keret Association. I’m working as a photog- rapher. Generally I’m interested in photography, modern arts, martial arts. In my opinion the Backpack Journalism project brings young people together, it gives them useful journalistic skills, and makes them active citizens. My suggestion to the young people is to try to find the backpack journalist in you! Karina Liebe-Kreutzner My name is Karina Liebe-Kreutzner, head of “People’s Media”. In this Association for media initiatives we promote alternative ways of publishing. Enabling citizens to edit and publish by themselves is a strong commitment of us and the backpack- journalism-method is a great way to achieve informative independence of young people. I work in media since 10 years: managing an advertising agency, producing programmes as radio-host and being the co-publisher of a free newspaper. As trainer in media literacy (radio, print, TV) and cultural exchange and development manager (Europe, Nicaragua, Morocco) I appreciate the power of freedom of speech and of the manifestation of social, cultural and political needs, which I consider the essence of Backpack Journalism. Katharina Michael My name is Katharina Michael and I am from Germany. I finished my studies in jour- nalism and history and am currently enrolled in an international media and politics course in Denmark. I worked for local radio and TV stations in Germany and Namibia, where I learned to face all kind of challenges of backpacker journalism. My advice is that there is no mountain too high to report for backpacker journalists, whatever the problem, if it’s the light, the equipment or the lack of local language- skills, there is always something you can do about it. The solution might not be perfect, but it will work somehow and you might surprise yourself. Viktor Portel I was born in Prague in April 1989. Since my teen age I am interested in history (now I am collecting stories for Post Bellum which is focused on oral history) and in politics (I was doing some kind of political videolobbing in the student initiative Inventura demokracie and now I am cooperating with NGO organisation Ekologický právní servis). On the field of education I move between both its sides: sometimes as a tutor and dramaturgist, sometimes as a student of documentary direction at Film and TV School od Academy of performing arts in Prague. Florian Rüdisser My name is Florian Rüdisser and I am representing the culture community center Spektral in Graz in Austria. I work as a culture and project manager while studying socioculture and youth work.

    Convergence Benefactors 1 Running Head: CONVERGENCE BENEFACTORS Convergence For Whom? Identifying Benefactors Along a Convergence Continuum Convergence Benefactors 2 Abstract While many researchers have pondered the advantages and issues characteristic of convergence strategies at American newspapers, none have identified its benefactors. The purpose of this study is to advance a typology outlining the categories of the convergence continuum and identifying the primary benefactor of each. Four categories of convergence are identified. Four categories of convergence benefactors are also introduced and analyzed. A typology is proposed to determine which group benefits most from each convergence strategy. Convergence Benefactors 3 Convergence For Whom? Identifying Benefactors Along a Convergence Continuum Convergence – the merging of media technologies, methods and resources – has become a salient strategy for American newspapers struggling against the tide of declining circulation since the turn of the century. While many researchers have pondered the advantages and issues characteristic of convergence strategies at American newspapers (e.g. Ketterer, Weir, Smethers, & Back, 2004; Quinn, 2005; Singer, 2006; Smolkin & Leone, 2006), none have identified its benefactors. The purpose of this study is to advance a typology outlining the categories of the convergence continuum and identifying those groups that benefit most from each strategy. The benefits of each convergence segment will be determined by an assessment of what is gained and what is lost through the implementation of each strategy. Four categories of convergence and four categories of potential benefactors will be identified based on existing definitions and typologies. A typology will be proposed relating both categories to determine whom benefits most from what type of convergence strategy.

Gentile Office: Mary Graydon Center (MGC) 320 Cell: (202) 492-6405 E-mail: [email protected] This distance learning course is an online version of the existing Foreign Correspondence course (COMM-544) which has been highly successful at American University since I created the class for the School of Communication (SOC) and first taught it in Spring 2004. I normally teach this course while I am at work in the field. I first taught it in Spring of 2008 while embedded with a company of U.S. Marines in Afghanistan. On that occasion I shot and produced the story, “Afghanistan: The Forgotten War,” for NOW on PBS, using the “backpack journalism” model. (You can see this piece online at http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/428/index.html ) The idea behind this course is to transmit the lessons I learn in the field to you at home, in part through my blog, http://www.billgentilebackpackjournalism.blogspot.com . As you will see on that blog, I’ve just returned from conducting two backpack journalism workshops in Mexico, where I also helped inaugurate the Mexican Foundation for Investigative Journalism. The backpack journalism model, which I’ve employed since the 1990s, is generally characterized by one journalist using a hand-held video camera to produce a version of visual communication more intimate and more immediate than that generated with shoulder-held cameras and a crew that includes camera person, sound person, producer and correspondent.

Auger Dr. Zeynep Tanes-Ehle Department of Journalism and Multimedia Arts Research Report Submitted for Knight Foundation as Fulfillment of Grant Agreement Grant Number 2011-0317 AUDIENCE ASSESSMENT OF THE QUALITY, USABILITY, AND TRUSTWORTHINESS OF NEWS CONTENT CREATED AND DELIVERED VIA MOBILE DEVICES This report presents findings of three studies examining the user and audience perspectives on traditional and mobile newsgathering technologies Research Report for Knight Foundation Grant Number 2011-0317 INTRODUCTION Grant #2011-0317was awarded to the Journalism and Multimedia Arts Department at Duquesne University in mid–2011. The purpose of the research to be conducted under this grant was to investigate audience perceptions of credibility and quality of newsgathering using both traditional techniques of backpack journalism and techniques that utilized new technologies such as the iPhone and iPad. Study design took place in 2011 and the early part of 2012 and resulted in three distinct phases of research. The first phase of the study (Study 1) involved focus groups to explore perceptions and barriers to newsgathering technologies by those who gather the news. A total of four focus groups—two each of pre-technology education and post-technology education--were conducted between August 2012 and April 2013. The second phase of the study (Study 2) was conducted in a controlled laboratory setting and explored audience perceptions of credibility, transparency, and quality of news gathered using traditional and non-traditional methods. The final phase of the research program (Study 3) involved extending the concepts explored in Study 2 to a wider audience using a nationwide participant recruitment service and deploying the study via the Internet.

Abstract The country of Myanmar started political reforms in 2010. Along with the process of becoming more democratic, peace and reconciliation have become very important due to the decades-long civil wars that continue to rage between ethnic minority groups and Myanmar Army. The Myanmar media have the potential to play a huge role in national reconciliation. One conflict between the Muslim and the Buddhist of Rakhine State of Myanmar has gained international attention. Research shows that media play a destructive or constructive role in conflict resolution depending on which news frames they adopt in reporting. This uses the theoretic peace journalism perspective, in which media take a careful, consistent and conscientious approach to report stories that create opportunities for society at large and emphasizes non-violent responses to conflict (Lynch, 2008). Using mass media framing theory and existing peace journalism literature, this study investigates the prominence of war and peace journalism framing in the media coverage of an ongoing conflict in the Northern Rakhine State of Myanmar between a group of Muslims and Buddhists who inhabit the region. This study employed a comparative analysis to examine war and peace journalism frames from stories published in four newspapers; two from Myanmar, one from Bangladesh, and one from the U.S.

From the early stages of production to distribution, and then through the characteristics of content and consumption patterns, numerous changes have been introduced by these mobile de- vices in an activity that has been undergoing one of the most uncertain moments in its long history. This uncertainty has stemmed from the decrease in income which was caused by the emergence of new competitors, such as the online press and social networks. This bibliographic review aims at identifying the changes caused by smartphones in the production distribution and consumption of news, analyzing its effect on the epistemology of journalism. We attempt to ascertain if the increasing influence of mobile technologies in the journalistic activity has changed its nature, improving the produc- tion of knowledge. Upon closer reading of the bibliography, it can be concluded that the versatility of mobile devices has facilitated a set of new possibilities not only for journalists, namely more autonomy and a reduction in the time spent between the event and the publication, but also for consumers, who can do a mobile and personalized consumption on their screens.
