In setting parameters for what can and cannot easily be discussed, domi- nant discourses also help frame understanding. Discourses relating to veganism are therefore presented as contravening commonsense, because they fall outside readily understood meat-eating discourses. Newspapers tend to discredit veganism through ridicule, or as being difficult or impossible to maintain in practice. Vegans are variously stereotyped as ascetics, faddists, sentimentalists, or in some cases, hostile extremists. The overall effect is of a derogatory portrayal of vegans and veganism that we interpret as ‘vegaphobia’. We interpret derogatory discourses of veganism in UK national newspapers as evidence of the cultural reproduction of speciesism, through which veganism is dissociated from its connection with debates concerning nonhuman animals’ rights or liberation. This is problematic in three, interrelated, respects. First, it empirically misrepresents the experience of veganism, and thereby marginalizes vegans. Second, it perpetuates a moral injury to omnivorous readers who are not presented with the opportunity to understand veganism and the challenge to speciesism that it contains. Velde Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago September 2, 2013 Abstract In the 18th century Britain repeatedly issued lottery loans, in which investors bought bonds whose size was determined by a draw. The probability distribution of these draws was perfectly known and highly skewed. After the draw the bonds were indistinguishable from other bonds. I collect market prices for the lottery tickets and show that investors were paying a substantial premium to be exposed to this artificial risk. Information about winners indicates that investors were well-to-do and included many merchants and bankers. I turn to cumulative prospect theory to make sense of these observations. Selling lotteries for more than their expected value is an old method of raising revenues; in Europe the earliest attested examples appear in the Low Countries in the mid-15th century, when cities organized lotteries to finance capital improvements and charitable works (Bernard et al. 1994). The use of lotteries spread to Italy in the 16th century where private and public lotteries were organized in Rome and Venice (Welch 2008). Venice may indeed have been the first government to issue public debt through lotteries. In England, aside from an early example under Elizabeth I, lottery loans began in 1694 and became a regular component of wartime financing until 1768. -

Tabloid media campaigns and public opinion: Quasi-experimental evidence on Euroscepticism in England Florian Foos London School of Economics & Political Science Daniel Bischof University of Zurich March 3, 2021 Abstract Whether powerful media outlets have eects on public opinion has been at the heart of theoret- ical and empirical discussions about the media’s role in political life. Yet, the eects of media campaigns are dicult to study because citizens self-select into media consumption. Using a quasi-experiment – the 30-years boycott of the most important Eurosceptic tabloid newspaper, The Sun, in Merseyside caused by the Hillsborough soccer disaster – we identify the eects of The Sun boycott on attitudes towards leaving the EU. Dierence-in-dierences designs using public opinion data spanning three decades, supplemented by referendum results, show that the boycott caused EU attitudes to become more positive in treated areas. This eect is driven by cohorts socialised under the boycott, and by working class voters who stopped reading The Sun. Erasmus Journal for Philosophy and Economics, Volume 9, Issue 1, Spring 2016, pp. 124-141. http://ejpe.org/pdf/9-1-art-6.pdf Bees on paper: the British press reads the Fable MATTEO REVOLTI Goethe University Frankfurt am Main Abstract: The British press played a significant role by influencing public debates following the publication of Mandeville’s The fable of the bees. Between 1714 and 1732, British newspapers published over three hundred reports on the Fable that circulated in the form of editorials and advertising announcements. These publications not only offered general information on the Fable, they also fueled controversy surrounding Mandeville’s text. In this article I will analyse how the British press introduced the Fable to its readers and influenced its reception. Specifically, my aim is to show how the Fable’s reception was shaped by the political and economic orientation of the newspapers in question. In doing so, I will analyze appearances of the Fable and its critics in the British press. I will then examine the language and topics used by two popular essay-papers, the Mist weekly journal and the Craftsman, who presented Mandeville’s book. Keywords: newspapers, advertisings, Nathaniel Mist, Robert Walpole, Jonathan Wild, South sea bubble Bernard Mandeville submitted his last publication, A letter to Dion, to the printer James Roberts in 1732. In this seventy-page essay, the Dutch author responded to George Berkeley, who had attacked the Fable in his Alciphron or the minute philosopher (1732). Mandeville ironically maintained that the Irish bishop had not read a single page of his work but only reproduced the criticisms of the Fable set forth in sermons and newspapers. -

Convergence Benefactors 1 Running Head: CONVERGENCE BENEFACTORS Convergence For Whom? Identifying Benefactors Along a Convergence Continuum Convergence Benefactors 2 Abstract While many researchers have pondered the advantages and issues characteristic of convergence strategies at American newspapers, none have identified its benefactors. The purpose of this study is to advance a typology outlining the categories of the convergence continuum and identifying the primary benefactor of each. Four categories of convergence are identified. Four categories of convergence benefactors are also introduced and analyzed. A typology is proposed to determine which group benefits most from each convergence strategy. Convergence Benefactors 3 Convergence For Whom? Identifying Benefactors Along a Convergence Continuum Convergence – the merging of media technologies, methods and resources – has become a salient strategy for American newspapers struggling against the tide of declining circulation since the turn of the century. While many researchers have pondered the advantages and issues characteristic of convergence strategies at American newspapers (e.g. Ketterer, Weir, Smethers, & Back, 2004; Quinn, 2005; Singer, 2006; Smolkin & Leone, 2006), none have identified its benefactors. The purpose of this study is to advance a typology outlining the categories of the convergence continuum and identifying those groups that benefit most from each strategy. The benefits of each convergence segment will be determined by an assessment of what is gained and what is lost through the implementation of each strategy. Four categories of convergence and four categories of potential benefactors will be identified based on existing definitions and typologies. A typology will be proposed relating both categories to determine whom benefits most from what type of convergence strategy.
