It includes information on the scope of population education programs in the region as well as activities and accomplishments in the field. The directory has two parts. The first part consists of population educationprograms in 13 Asian countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Viet Nam) and the second part includes those in six Pacific countries (Micronesia, Fiji, Marshall Islands, Palau, Solomon Islands, and Tonga). Entries are classified alphabetically by country. Each project is described in terms of project title, duration, implementing unit, contact person and address, funding source, executing agency, objectives, scope, and major accomplishments. For purposes of the directory, the major achievements of each organization highlight 'hat has been achieved in the following areas: institutionalization; curriculum and materials development; orientation or training; Countries which have formally established population education sub-officesor branches at the state, region, province, or district levelare also included in this directory. -

A prescriptive grammar, on the other hand, specifies how a language and its grammar rules should be used. A prescriptivist view of language implies a distinction between "good grammar" and "bad grammar," and its primary focus is on standard forms of grammar and syntactic constructions. Main Text Section 1: Framing the Issue A definition of a descriptive grammar: A descriptive grammar is a study of a language, its structure, and its rules as they are used in daily life by its speakers from all walks of life, including standard and nonstandard varieties. That is, descriptive grammar describes the language, its structure, and the syntactic rules that govern sentence and phrase constructions (Greenbaum & Quirk, 1990). A descriptive study of grammar is non-judgmental, and it does not have the goal of determining what represents good or bad language, correct or incorrect structures, or grammatical or ungrammatical forms (Leech, Deuchar, & Hoogenraad, 2006). A descriptive grammar is typically studied by linguists, anthropologists, ethnographers, psychologists, or other researchers who seek to identify how the grammar of a language is actually used in various contexts and for various purposes. (Books that describe and present the grammar of any language are called reference grammars, or sometimes "a grammar" by non-specialists.) In this light, sentences such as Him and me, we are neighbors or I don't know nothing simply reflect how the language is used by its speakers. -

Box 159 Kolonia, Polmpei, Federated States of Micronesia 96941. Abstract-Fifteen species of reptiles, 18 birds, and five mammals are recorded from Pakin Atoll. None is endemic to Pakin and all of the residents tend to be widely distributed throughout Micronesia. Intro duced species include four mammals (Rattus exulans, Canis fami/iaris, Fe/is catus, Sus scrofa), the Red Junglefowl (Gallus gal/us) among birds, and at least one lizard (Varanus indicus). Of the 17 indigenous birds, ten are presumed or documented breeding residents, including four land birds, a heron, and five terns. The Micronesian Honeyeater (My=omela rubratra) is the most common land bird, followed closely by the Micro nesian Starling (Aplonis opaca). The vegetation is mainly Cocos forest, considerably modified by periodic cutting of the undergrowth, deliber ately set fires, and the rooting of pigs. Most of the present vertebrate species do not appear to be seriously endangered by present levels of human activity. But the Micronesian Pigeon (Ducula oceanica) is less numerous on the settled islands, probably reflecting increased hunting pressure, and sea turtles (especially Chelonia mydas) and their eggs are harvested indiscriminately . Introduction Terrestrial vertebrates have been poorly studied on many of the remote atolls of Micronesia, and distributional records are lacking or scanty for many islands. The present study documents the occurrence and relative abundance of reptiles, birds, and mammals on Pakin Atoll for the first time. -

Native American Languages, Indigenous Languages of the Native Peoples of North, Middle, and South America
Native American Languages, indigenous languages of the native peoples of North, Middle, and South America. The precise number of languages originally spoken cannot be known, since many disappeared before they were documented. In North America, around 300 distinct, mutually unintelligible languages were spoken when Europeans arrived. Of those, 187 survive today, but few will continue far into the 21st century, since children are no longer learning the vast majority of these. In Middle America (Mexico and Central America) about 300 languages have been identified, of which about 140 are still spoken. South American languages have been the least studied. Around 1500 languages are known to have been spoken, but only about 350 are still in use. These, too are disappearing rapidly. Classification A major task facing scholars of Native American languages is their classification into language families. (A language family consists of all languages that have evolved from a single ancestral language, as English, German, French, Russian, Greek, Armenian, Hindi, and others have all evolved from Proto-Indo-European.) Because of the vast number of languages spoken in the Americas, and the gaps in our information about many of them, the task of classifying these languages is a challenging one. In 1891, Major John Wesley Powell proposed that the languages of North America constituted 58 independent families, mainly on the basis of superficial vocabulary resemblances. At the same time Daniel Brinton posited 80 families for South America. These two schemes form the basis of subsequent classifications. In 1929 Edward Sapir tentatively proposed grouping these families into superstocks, 6 in North America and 15 in Middle America. -

Phan©2010 Abstract: This article examines the linguistic boundaries that separated (or united) Medieval China’s southern territories and the river plains of northern Vietnam at the end of the first millennium C.E. New evidence from Sino–Vietnamese vocabulary demonstrates the existence of a regional dialect of Middle Chinese, spoken in the Ma, Ca, and Red River plains. Preliminary analysis suggests that a “language shift” away from this “Annamese Middle Chinese” in favor of the local, non-Chinese language, was largely responsible for the highly sinicized lexicon of modern Vietnamese. This theory, which challenges the tradition of an essentially literary source for Sino–Vietnamese, may help to explain some of the sinicized features of Vietnamese phonology and syntax as well. The last section of the article presents a tentative hypothesis for the formal emergence of Vietnamese contra its closest relative, Muong. These hypotheses require further testing, and are presented here as a first look at the history of the languages of “Annam”. Key Words: Ancient Vietnam; Sino–Vietnamese; Muong; historical phonology; language contact Introduction This article revisits the notions of “Chinese” and “Vietnamese” in a linguistic context, and as they pertain to the transitional period linking the first and second millennia C.E. New evidence from Sino–Vietnamese (Chinese words borrowed into Vietnamese), and the Vietnamese language’s closest living relative, Muong, demonstrate that traditional notions of the “survival” of the Vietnamese language under centuries of Chinese domination create a false imagining of its history and evolution—one that has been tailored to a political agenda of national identity. -

This overview of syntactic variety should make the guide useful for field linguists preparing to describe any of the forty-eight Ngwi languages that were recognized for the first time in the sixteenth edition of the Ethnologue (Lewis 2009). This is done by giving examples of where and how widely the languages in this group vary even within the typical categories of the Ngwi languages, including sentence introducers, conjunctions, noun types, compounding, derivation, noun particles, postnominal clausal particles, classifiers and numerals, negation, adjectives, pronouns, adverbs, verb types, verb concatenations, preverbal and postverbal slots, verb particles, clause-final and sentence- final particles, simple sentences, compound sentences, and complex sentences.
