Social Sciences ROMANIAN LANGUAGE AND ITS DIALECTS Ana-Maria DUDĂU1 ABSTRACT: THE ROMANIAN LANGUAGE, THE CONTINUANCE OF THE LATIN LANGUAGE SPOKEN IN THE EASTERN PARTS OF THE FORMER ROMAN EMPIRE, COMES WITH ITS FOUR DIALECTS: DACO- ROMANIAN, AROMANIAN, MEGLENO-ROMANIAN AND ISTRO-ROMANIAN TO COMPLETE THE EUROPEAN LINGUISTIC PALETTE. THE ROMANIAN LINGUISTS HAVE ALWAYS SHOWN A PERMANENT CONCERN FOR BOTH THE IDENTITY AND THE STATUS OF THE ROMANIAN LANGUAGE AND ITS DIALECTS, THUS SUPPORTING THE EXISTENCE OF THE ETHNIC, LINGUISTIC AND CULTURAL PARTICULARITIES OF THE MINORITIES AND REJECTING, FIRMLY, ANY ATTEMPT TO ASSIMILATE THEM BY FORCE KEYWORDS: MULTILINGUALISM, DIALECT, ASSIMILATION, OFFICIAL LANGUAGE, SPOKEN LANGUAGE. The Romanian language - the only Romance language in Eastern Europe - is an "island" of Latinity in a mainly "Slavic sea" - including its dialects from the south of the Danube – Aromanian, Megleno-Romanian and Istro-Romanian. Multilingualism is defined narrowly as the alternative use of several languages; widely, it is use of several alternative language systems, regardless of their status: different languages, dialects of the same language or even varieties of the same idiom, being a natural consequence of linguistic contact. Multilingualism is an Europe value and a shared commitment, with particular importance for initial education, lifelong learning, employment, justice, freedom and security. Romanian language, with its four dialects - Daco-Romanian, Aromanian, Megleno- Romanian and Istro-Romanian – is the continuance of the Latin language spoken in the eastern parts of the former Roman Empire. Together with the Dalmatian language (now extinct) and central and southern Italian dialects, is part of the Apenino-Balkan group of Romance languages, different from theAlpine–Pyrenean group2. -

This article offers an analysis of Videograms of a Revolution (1992) BY (ARUN &AROCKI AND !NDREJ 5JICŌ AND The Pixelated Revolution (2011) BY 2ABIH -ROUÎ WHICH BOTH REmECT ON THE ROLE OF AMATEUR RECORDINGS IN A REVOLUTION 7HILE THE lRST DEALS WITH THE ABUNDANT FOOTAGE OF THE MASS protests in 1989 Romania, revealing how images became operative in the unfolding of the revolution, the second shows that mobile phone videos disseminated by the Syrian protesters in 2011 respond to the desire of immediacy with the blurry, fragmentary images taken in the heart of the EVENTS/NEOFTHEMOSTSIGNIlCANTRESULTSOFTHISNEWSITUATIONISTHEWAY image production steers the comportment of people involved in the events. Ordinary participants become actors performing certain roles, while the events themselves are being seen as cinematic. This increased theatricality of mass protests can thus be seen as an instance of blurring the lines between video and photography on the one hand and performance, theatre and cinema on the other. Between the Autumn of Nations of 1989 and the Arab Spring of 2011, a certain transformation in the role of image production and dissemination took place. Communist Development and the Post-Communist Democratic Deficit
Communist Development and the Post-Communist Democratic Deficit Grigore Pop-Eleches Princeton University [email protected] Abstract: This article analyzes the post-communist regime track record in comparative perspective and reevaluates the impact of modernization on the democratic prospects in developing countries. The analysis shows that ex-communist countries were less democratic than their socio- economic development levels would have predicted, and that the development-democracy link was different than elsewhere, due to the distorted nature of communist development. The article then traces this democratic deficit to individual-level deficits in democratic attitudes and civic and political participation. Post-communist democratic prospects are further undermined by the fact that the participatory deficit is greater among the relatively pro- democratic middle class, than among the lower class, which had experienced mobilization from above under communism, but was less likely to subscribe to democratic values than lower classes in non-communist countries. After years of relative neglect,1 modernization theory has recently made an unexpected comeback as an explanation of cross-national regime patterns, as several statistically sophisticated approaches (e.g. Przeworski and Limongi 1997, Barro 1999, Boix and Stokes 2003, Epstein et al 2006) have assessed the impact of socio-economic development on the initiation and survival of democracy. CONVENTION between the Hellenic Republic and Romania for the avoidance of double taxation with respect to taxes on income and on capital. The Government of the Hellenic Republic and the Government of Romania Desiring to promote and strengthen the economic relations between the two countries on the basis of national sovereignty and respect of independence, equality in rights, reciprocal advantage and non-interference in domestic matters; have agreed as follows: Article 1 PERSONAL SCOPE This Convention shall apply to persons who are residents of one or both of the Contracting States. Article 2 TAXES COVERED 1. This Convention shall apply to taxes on income and on capital imposed on behalf of a Contracting State or of its administrative territorial units or local authorities, irrespective of the manner in which they are levied. 2. There shall be regarded as taxes on income and on capital all taxes imposed on total income, on total capital, or on elements of income or of capital, including taxes on gains from the alienation of movable or immovable property, as well as taxes on capital appreciation. 3. The existing taxes to which the Convention shall apply are in particular: a) In the case of the Hellenic Republic: i) the income and capital tax on natural persons ; ii) the income and capital tax on legal persons; iii) the contribution for the Water Supply and Drainage Agencies calculated on the gross- income from buildings; (hereinafter referred to as "(Hellenic tax"). b) In the case of Romania: i) the individual income tax; ii) the tax on salaries, wages and other similar remunerations ; iii) the tax on the profits; iv) the tax on income realised by individuals from agricultural activities; hereinafter referred to as "Romania tax"). -

Democratization of the Taiwanese and Korean Political Regimes: a Comparative Study
The Developing Economies, XXXV-4 (December 1997): 422–39 DEMOCRATIZATION OF THE TAIWANESE AND KOREAN POLITICAL REGIMES: A COMPARATIVE STUDY MASAHIRO WAKABAYASHI INTRODUCTION HE purpose of this paper is to compare the autocratic political regimes which carried out the industrialization of Taiwan and the Republic of Korea T (hereafter Korea) in the postwar period (leading to their eventual emer- gence as NIEs) and also to compare their respective democratization processes. In comparative political science the type of industrialization-oriented autocratic re- gime characterizing the two states is usually referred to as an authoritarian regime. While both belonged to the Western camp during the international political antago- nism of the cold war and had constitutions and parliaments characteristic of a democratic state, the two states actually excluded the masses from political partici- pation by relying on the force of the military and the political police. Both launched political democratization processes in the second half of the 1980s. In Korea this process was completed with a directly elected president coming to power after an interval of thirty years while in Taiwan the direct election of a president in March 1996 came as the finishing touch to its transition to democracy. Comparison obviously implies a large measure of commonality between the two states. Both have suffered from the division of their countries. Both became anticommunist military outposts during the cold war in Asia. In both territories, anticommunist autocratic regimes were established which carried out industrializa- tion. In both, the regimes were democratized following successful industrializa- tion. The two states thus shared commonalities in the roles they played in postwar international relations as well as in the general framework and timetable of politi- cal and economic development. -
