Resumen Entre los sedimentos cuaternarios de la llanura pampeana, en particular en las provincias de Buenos Aires, sur de Córdoba y La Pampa, son frecuen- tes acumulaciones arenosas culminando la secuencia. Han recibido distintos nombres formacionales, y estratigráfi camente se las ha considerado asigna- bles a la edad mamífero Lujanense (Pleistoceno superior), en algunos casos con sus términos superiores en el Holoceno. En el centro de la provincia de La Pampa, extensos mantos arenosos se conocen como Formación Meauco, formación que tiene continuidad física con depósitos equivalentes de la pro- vincia de Buenos Aires. En el trabajo se describen e interpretan cuatro per- fi les sedimentológicos detallados de esta unidad, relevados en la cercanía del paraje Jagüel del Monte. Los mismos ponen en evidencia que existieron dos períodos en los que la humedad fue mayor, coincidiendo con sedimen- tación escasa a nula y el desarrollo de paleosuelos, de manera que durante el lapso de tiempo materializado por la Formación Meauco, se sucedieron cinco períodos con diferencias climático ambientales: árido - húmedo - árido - húmedo - árido. Abstract Two syntopic morphotypes of the genus Hypostomus - H. nigromaculatus and H. cf. nigromaculatus (Atlântico Stream, Paraná State) - were compared through the allozyme electrophoresis technique. Twelve enzymatic systems (AAT, ADH, EST, GCDH, G3PDH, GPI, IDH, LDH, MDH, ME, PGM and SOD) were analyzed, attributing the score of 20 loci, with a total of 30 alleles. Six loci were diagnostic (Aat-2, Gcdh-1, Gpi-A, Idh-1, Ldh-A and Mdh-A), indicating the presence of interjacent reproductive isolation. The occurrence of few polymorphic loci acknowledge two morphotypes, with heterozygosity values He = 0.0291 for H. nigromaculatus and He = 0.0346 for H. cf. nigromaculatus. FIS statistics demonstrated fixation of the alleles in the two morphotypes. Genetic identity (I) and dis- tance (D) of Nei (1978) values were I = 0.6515 and D = 0.4285. The data indicate that these two morphotypes from the Atlântico Stream belong to different species. Key words: allozymes, Hypostomus nigromaculatus, fish genetics, genetic distance and polymorphism. Anomalous 10 years as 1941, 1982-83, 1997-98 and 2015-16 signified enormous fluvial discharges draining towards the Pacific 11 Ocean, but also to the Atlantic. These floods affected large cities built on medium-latitudinal Andes (Lima, Quito, 12 Salta), but also those located at floodplains, as Porto Alegre, Blumenau, Curitiba, Asunción, Santa Fe and Buenos 13 Aires. Maximum discharge months are particular and easily distinguished along time series from watersheds located 14 at the South American Arid Diagonal. At watersheds conditioned by precipitations delivered from the Atlantic or 15 Pacific anti-cyclonic centers, the ENSO-triggered floods are more difficult to discern. The floods of 1941 affected 16 70,000 inhabitants in Porto Alegre. In 1983, Blumenau city was flooded during several days; and the Paraná River 17 multiplied 15 times the width of its middle floodplain. That year, the Colorado River in Northern Patagonia 18 connected for the last time to the Desagûadero – Chadileuvú - Curacó system and its delta received saline water for 19 the last time. -

Siderca initiated its activities during the import substitution phase in Argentina and later achieved international market leadership. The explanation for this breakthrough onto the global stage is to be found in the arrival of a new and young group of middle managers who were promoted from within the corporation. This pattern is consistent with the literature on the role of middle management in the design and implementation of strategic change. The transformations in this company also influenced the rest of the activities of the Techint Group. We studied the diet of the Black Skimmer Rynchops niger during the non-breeding season (austral summer-autumn 2000) by analyzing 1034 regurgitated pellets from Mar Chiquita, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Fish was the main prey, with five species identified: Odontesthes argentinensis, O. incisa, Anchoa marinii, Engraulis anchoita and Pomatomus saltatrix. O. incisa and O. argentinensis were present in all the sampled months, showing also larger values of occurrence, numerical abundance and importance by mass than other items. The average size of the fish was 73±17 mm in length and 2.2±1.7 g in mass. Significant differences were observed in the comparison of the occurrence, importance by number and by mass throughout the study period. The presence of fish in the diet of the Black Skimmer coincides with a study carried out on the North American subspecies. Our analysis of the diet suggests that skimmers use both estuarine and marine areas when foraging. The “round lake”, which gives its name to the city in the language of the Mapuche Indians, is surrounded by urbanization, and located within the sub-humid Pampa. According to the last census of population and housing, it hosted 30,764 of the 13,827,203 inhabitants of the province’s territory in 2001. It concentrates the main regional economic activities: agriculture, dairy farming and cattle raising. Secondary and tertiary activities also take place there: manufacturing industry, services and commerce. Our research activities are aimed to studying the territorial organization and the places developed through the history of Trenque Lauquen. -

Overview of Parana Delta1 Author: Verónica M.E. Zagare2 Parana River The Parana River is considered the third largest river in the American Continent, after the Mississippi in the United States and the Amazonas in Brazil. It is located in South America and it runs through Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, where it flows into the Río de la Plata. Its length is 2570 Km and its basin surface is around 1.51 million km2. The two initial tributaries of the Parana are the Paranaiba River and the Grande River, both in Brazil, but the most important tributary is the Paraguay River, located in homonymous country. In comparison with other rivers, the Paraná is about half the length of the Mississippi River (6211 km), but it has similar flow. Parana River’s mean streamflow is 18500 m3/s (Menendez, 2002) and Mississippi’s flow is 17704 m3/s. Thus, the Parana has twice the length of the Rhine (1320 km), but it has 8 times its flow (2300 m3/s). Figure 1: Parana River location. Source: Zagare, V. From a geologic perspective, the complex system of the delta and the estuary are considered a dynamic sedimentary geologic- hydrologic unit which has a vital relevance not only for the region -a high populated area with more than 22 million inhabitants- but also for the hydrology of South American continent. -

THIS PUBLICATION WAS PREPARED UNDER A PARTNERSHIP BY © Ecological Risk Assessment for the Paraguay River Basin Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay Executive Summary January 2012 Foreword This assessment is the ! rst step to ascertain the vulnerability of the Paraguay River Basin to climate change. The purpose of this up-to-date picture is to encourage discussions on which risks could be magni! ed in the future if no action is taken now. In order to get a sense of the importance of the Paraguay River Basin, just consider that it is home to the largest " oodplain in the planet – the Pantanal – where the annual cycles of " oods and droughts dictate the lives of thousands of species. Over 8 million people live in the region. The primary economic activity is agriculture, with 30 million head of cattle – approximately four times as many as the number of local inhabitants –, and crop lands cover nearly 7 million hectares, which is equivalent to almost one third of the entire state of São Paulo. © WWF-BRASIL/ADRIANO GAMBARINI The natural treasures of the Pantanal Wetlands attract nearly one million tourists every year. Ecosystem services in the Pantanal are estimated at $112 billion annually, a study by Moraes (2008) reveals. Therefore, it makes much more sense to preserve a part of this region in its natural state than fully convert it into livestock and crops, whose estimated annual earnings would total a mere $414 million. Furthermore, the ecosystem services bene! t society as a whole while the earnings from agriculture go to those involved in rural production.
