    UNESCO World Book Capital 2020 Kuala Lumpur named World Book Capital 2020 IIUM TRANSLATION BOOK PROJECT FOR KUALA LUMPUR WORLD BOOK CAPITAL (KLWBC) 2020 Background Cities designated as UNESCO World Book Capital will undertake to promote books and reading and to organize activities over the year. As the 20th city to bear the title, Kuala Lumpur has been named as World Book Capital for the year 2020 by the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay based on the recommendation of the World Book Capital Advisory Committee. The programme will start on 23 April 2020 with the slogan ‘KL Baca – caring through reading’. The programme focuses on four themes:- i. Reading in all its forms. ii. Development of the book industry infrastructure. iii. Inclusiveness and digital accessibility. iv. Empowerment of children through reading. Roles and Function of IIUM Press The UMC in its Meeting No.7/2019 has approved for IIUM Press Office to handle the new project – to translate 100 international titles and publish under the IIUM Translation Book Project for Kuala Lumpur World Book Capital (KLWBC) 2020.   • Unesco's Tbilisi — World Book Capital 2021: Renewing the Book Stock of Public School Libraries Project Is Launched
    PRESS RELEASE 23 November, 2020 UNESCO'S TBILISI — WORLD BOOK CAPITAL 2021: RENEWING THE BOOK STOCK OF PUBLIC SCHOOL LIBRARIES PROJECT IS LAUNCHED The first stage for the Project of Renewing the Book Stock of Public School Libraries across Tbilisi has been launched within the framework of UNESCO "Tbilisi —World Book Capital 2021". The project is organised by Tbilisi City Hall, the Tbilisi Multifunctional Libraries Union, and the Georgian Publishers and Booksellers Association. At the first stage of the project the book stocks of 62 public school libraries will be renewed. Each school will receive a 900 GEL voucher which will be used to purchase books from more than 30 publishing houses and book distributing organisations operating in Georgia. The programme aims to fill Tbilisi public school libraries with the latest editions of books, bring school students closer to modern literature, and to improve literacy. The project will carry on to 2021 and, by the end of the year, all Public Schools Libraries in Tbilisi will have renewed their book stocks. “Tbilisi will officially receive the status of World Book Capital in April 2021. Until then, preparatory work is underway. Education has always been a priority of Tbilisi City Hall, so I am glad that we [the project organisers] are starting the project with activities planned specially for school students. By the end of 2021 the libraries of all Tbilisi public schools will be enriched with new books”, – said Deputy Mayor of Tbilisi Andria Basilaia. “Providing the public school libraries with new books is one of the main components of the project which will be implemented in several stages and will eventually cover all public schools.

For the last 10 years, the Foundation had supported over 300 publications on key political topics or in underrepresented languages, in print and electronic formats, in 22 languages; commissioned and distributed 38 studies on various aspects of book publishing and translations; supported the establishment of exchange networks between publishers from “peripheral” languages; organized and participated in 50+ events and worked on numerous other projects in over 20 countries.     15 September 2016 UNESCO WORLD BOOK CAPITAL CALL FOR APPLICATIONS 2019 1. Through the World Book Capital programme, UNESCO acknowledges the cities commitment for promoting books and fostering reading during a 12 months period between one World Book and Copyright Day and the next (23 April). 2. The Advisory Committee – operating under the auspices of UNESCO – is made up of one representative of the International Publishers Association (IPA), one representative of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and one UNESCO representative. 3. The Director-General of UNESCO is responsible for the designation of the cities in conformity with the procedure set out below and follows both internal and external consultations with the other members of the Advisory Committee. 4. The Advisory Committee for the World Book Capital is calling for nominations for the World Book Capital 2019. 5. The complete applications drafted in one of UNESCO Secretariat’s working languages (English or French), should reach UNESCO no later than Wednesday 15 March 2017. No application received after this date will be taken into consideration. 6. The applications should be submitted by email using the UNESCO application form (Annex 1) and sent to the following address: [email protected]. 7. To ensure a balanced representation of all regions1 of the world, the Advisory Committee will not consider consecutive nominations of cities from the same region. Since the 2018 title was awarded to a city of Europe and North America (Athens, Greece), no candidature from this region will be taken into consideration for the 2019 nomination. 8.     Patricia Fleming Education and Training of Special Collections Professionals, Librarians, and Archivists in Canada I WOULD LIKE TO OPEN with two recent national events. The first concerns Library and Archives Canada/Bibliothèque et Archives Canada (LAC/BAC), a new institution cre- ated by federal legislation proclaimed on May 21, 2004, in a merger of the National Archives and the National Library. The National Archives was the older of the two entities. Established in 1872, it was the first cultural agency created after Confedera- tion in 1867. An active collector from the outset, the Archives maintained offices in London and Paris, collected documentary art, photographs, and artifacts (including war trophies during the First World War), as well as books and newspapers. Although the records of governments, prime ministers, and other political figures constitute a major part of the holdings, the papers of organizations and individual Canadians also are collected and made available. The National Library was not established until 1953, even though its absence had been noted for almost a century. An outstanding collection of Canadiana has been developed there by legal deposit, aggressive acquisi- tion policies, and transfers from other libraries such as the Library of Parliament. Its particular strengths are music, children’s materials, and literary manuscripts. The common goal of the librarians and archivists in this new institution is to increase awareness and understanding of, and access to, Canada’s documentary heritage. They are seeking partnerships with libraries, archives, and museums across Canada to develop services that are truly national, to shape innovative programs, and to provide unparalleled access to the collection.

    Press release 24 April 2019 House of Wisdom to celebrate Sharjah as UNESCO World Book Capital 2019 Celebrations in Sharjah – this year’s UNESCO World Book Capital – kicked-off with the unveiling of The Scroll, a new piece of public art by British sculptor Gerry Judah. The opening event also revealed designs for the new House of Wisdom – an iconic library and cultural centre that seeks to be the catalyst for a new cultural quarter in the city. Both projects are being developed by Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq). Gerard Evenden, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners said: “Long considered primarily as repositories for books and periodicals, the role of libraries in the life of contemporary communities is set to be reimagined for the 21st century. The House of Wisdom conceptualises the library as a social hub for learning, supported by innovation and technology.” Located on the Sharjah International Airport Road, ten kilometres from the city centre, the two-storey building embodies a sense of clarity and lightness, with a large floating roof cantilevering on all sides of a transparent rectilinear volume. The 15-metre-wide overhang shades the façades throughout most of the day, while aluminium screens with differing densities filter the low sun in the evenings. The movable screens are deployed only during the late afternoon, when the sun is at its lowest, preserving the visual connections with the landscaped gardens. Visitors enter the building from its western edge into a double-height reception hub with a central courtyard that brings light to the interior spaces. This densely planted green area creates a comfortable outdoor environment for social events or quiet contemplation, evoking the layered canopies cultivated.
