Collection Development Policy Statement Rare Books Collection Subject Specialist Responsible
Collection Development Policy Statement Rare Books Collection Subject Specialist responsible: Doug McElrath, 301‐405‐9210, [email protected] I. Purpose The Rare Books Collection in the University of Maryland Libraries preserves physical evidence of the most successful format for recording and disseminating human knowledge: the printed codex. From the invention of printing with movable type in Asia to its widespread adoption and explosive growth in 15th century Europe, the printed book in all its forms has had an inestimable impact on the way information has been organized, spread, and consumed. The invention of printing is one of the critical technological advances that made possible the modern world. At the University of Maryland, the Rare Books Collection serves multiple purposes: As a teaching collection that preserves physical examples of the way the book has evolved over the centuries, from a hand‐crafted artifact to a mass‐produced consumable. As a research collection for targeted concentrations of printed text supporting scholarly investigation (see collection scope below). As an historical repository for outstanding examples of human accomplishment as preserved in printed formats, including seminal works in the arts, humanities, social sciences, physical and biological sciences. As a research repository for noteworthy examples of the art and craft of the book: typography, bindings, paper making, illustration, etc. As a secure storehouse for works that because of their scarcity, fragility, age, ephemerality, provenance, controversial content, or high monetary value are not appropriate for the general circulating collection. The Rare Books Collection seeks to enable researchers to interact with the physical artifact as much as possible. -

Al-Mureijah Art Spaces Sharjah, United Arab Emirates
2019 On Site Review Report by Raza Ali Dada 5050.UAE Al-Mureijah Art Spaces Sharjah, United Arab Emirates Architect Mona El Mousfy, Sharmeen Azam Inayat Client Sharjah Art Foundation Design 2010-2011 Completed 2013 Al-Mureijah Art Spaces Sharjah, United Arab Emirates I. Introduction The Al-Mureijah Art Spaces are a series of exhibition spaces set up by the Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF). Following the global success of the Sharjah Biennial the need for flexible spaces to house contemporary art was inevitable. A part of the historic district was acquired by the foundation, and re-appropriated to house spaces for contemporary art, installations and performances. New buildings were designed and inserted into the historical fabric, adding a new typology of buildings to the current mix. The five new gallery spaces are surrounded by courtyards and older structures that also function as spaces for art, installations and performances. The placement and scale of these spaces is mindful of the historical fabric where one navigates through narrow and shaded passageways punctuated by the courtyards. A significant urban response eliminates any boundary or formal element to mark the limit of the project, thus enabling pedestrians to walk through or approach the project from a number of sides. This creates an informal relationship and a natural access for the public in this unique urban setting. II. Contextual information A. Brief historical background The Emirate of Sharjah covers approximately 2,600 square kilometres. In addition to Sharjah city, which lies on the shores of the Arabian Gulf, the emirate has three regions on the scenic east coast at the Gulf of Oman: Dibba Al Hisn, Khor Fakkan and Kalba. -

Johnsgard School ofBiological Sciences University ofNebraska ~ Lincoln 68588 ~iohns~a@unlserve,unl.edu One of the major disappointments of my youth was that I grew up without access to a real field guide to birds. My early years were spent in a small North Dakota village that lacked a library, and my only reference book on birds was a badly-tattered copy of a badly-illustrated 1912 book that my mother had grown up with, Chester A. Reed's Birds ofEastern North America. However, in 1939 a very kind aunt gave me a still-cherished copy of the Macmillan edition of Audubon's Birds of America as a Christmas present. -

Not listed here are presses outside the accessioned collections, such as two Vandercook proof presses (a Model 4T and a Universal III) that are now earning an honest living in the office printing shop. At some future time, no doubt, they too will be retired into the collections. The Division of Graphic Arts was established in 1886 as a special kind of print collection with the purpose of representing “art as an industry.” For many years collecting was centered around prints, together with the plates and tools that made them. Not until the middle of the twentieth century did the Division begin to collect printing presses systematically. Even more recently, the scope of collecting has been broadened to include printing type and type-making apparatus.
