15 2 0 1 5 – 2 0 16 | A N N U A L R E P O R T Jeevan Stem Cell Registry

Jeevan Stem Cell Registry was established in 2015, to recruit 30,000 potential adult stem cell donors from regular blood donors. Stem Cells donated by these donors can be used to treat Blood cancer, Thalassemia and other curable blood diseases. Because of the fact that there will be a large number of stem cells in each such donation, these can be used to treat adult patients as well. Before 2020, we have to scale-up the inventory to 30,000. It is funded through grants from Jamsetji Tata Trust and United Way of Chennai. Around 1730 potential donors from a pool of regular blood donors have already enrolled.

22 A N N U A L R E P O R T | 2 0 1 5 – 2 0 16 Cord Blood Donor Feedback

‘‘We wanted to save our baby’s cord blood for any eventualities in future but when we came to know that currently cord blood is primarily used to treat blood cancer and thalassemia we decided to donate since we don’t have family history of either of these conditions/ diseases. We hope our donation will help in treating other patients who are maybe suffering from these conditions and/or be used for research. If we didn’t donate, this cord blood would have gone waste, donating gives us the satisfaction of doing it for a noble cause.’’ Rajasekhar Pullela & Keerthy Kanakamedala, Hyderabad

‘‘Heartfelt thanks for making our baby a part of “ Be the Cure “ movement run by Jeevan cord blood bank….Right from the first correspondence to the collection, there were crisp and clear instructions on how to go about. I wish this would propagate and your registry would be overflowed with donated cord blood.’’ Dr. Hitanshu Bhatt & Dr.Gouri Hitanshu Nagraj-Bhatt, Surat ‘‘We know the importance of the stem cell in protecting lives of other children. If we save it for ourselves through any other organization, it may be of no use. Atleast by this way (donating), we can have our hand in saving a life. I personally feel no child should be in a position to need a stem cell. However, we never know how nature hurts a child, so at that time my Son’s cord may be helpful. I appreciate the way your organisation runs and will suggest others.’’ K. Pratik Reddy & Sneha Reddy K, Hyderabad ‘‘We had a brief discussion with the doctor and understood that it’s a very small probability to be able to use one’s own cord blood / tissue for their children. It could be put to use effectively, for someone else, on the other hand. Also knowing that if there was evera necessity for it, we would be able to take help from your organisation itself gave us a reassurance.’’ Hari Ganapathy & Vandana, Chennai ‘‘I think keeping cord blood in a private bank is a status symbol nowadays. Some parents feel guilty about not securing the future of their child by keep the blood in private bank. I want to tell such parents that if you do not have a history of critical diseases then please go for public bank otherwise you will be guilty of letting someone die whose life could have been saved with your donation. There is very rare chance that such cord blood will be used. I will be happy if my feedback can increase the awareness about cord blood donation.’’ Tapan Jaggi & Vaishali Jaggi, Ghaziabad 23 2 0 1 5 – 2 0 16 | A N N U A L R E P O R T Blood Donation Camps Jeevan thanks the following organisations for their wholehearted support to the voluntary blood donation campaigns
