7 more dolphins found dead

 Seven more spinner dolphins were found dead at fishing villages near Kalpakkam and Mamallapuram on Tuesday, a day after the carcasses of five dolphins were found washed ashore in the same area.  Members of the TREE foundation said that with this, the total number of dead spinner dolphins found by them since March 9 had gone up to 15.

Chennai Trekking Club founder’s antecedents under scanner

 The city police have been checking the antecedents of the founder of the Trekking Club (CTC) Peter Van Geit, a Beligian national settled in India.  A senior police officer said: “We are looking for the organiser who is not available in the specified address. We are also enquiring about his antecedents.”

Wild fire destroys forest in Thrissur

 Forest officials and local people had a tough time controlling the fire that broke out in the Athirappilly and Vazhachal forests. The fire that began on March 13 afternoon at Athrirappilly spread to the Vazhachal forest in strong winds. It took officials over 24 hours to bring blaze under control .

Post-Theni tragedy, govt bans forest treks

 The Forest Department has imposed a temporary ban on forest trekking and has restricted entry into wildlife sanctuaries in the backdrop of the tragic incident at Theni in which several persons were charred to death in a forest fire.

 Health Minister K.K. Shailaja said unpardonable deceitfulness on the part of two avaricious private self- financing medical colleges had compelled the government to introduce the Bill.

Country’s ‘tallest’ flag unfurled in Belagavi

 The unfurling of what is claimed to be the country‟s tallest national flag. The 9,600 sq.ft flag on a 110 m flag pole was unfurled by Ramesh Jarkiholi, District in-charge Minister.  Religious leaders of Hindu, Muslim, Christian and Sikh institutions were present. MLA Firoz Sait, who has been pushing for the project, was present along with other district officials.

One CRPF jawan from Hassan dead

 Chandra H.S., a native of Haradoor in Arkalgud taluk, is among the nine CRPF men, who were killed in an ambush by Maoists in Sukma district on Tuesday. Chandra, 29, son of Swamy Gowda, had joined CRPF after his studies. His family has been informed .

MUDA allots 530 intermediate sites in Lalithadripura North layout

 Government approval for developing the layout at a cost of ₹54 crore was issued in September 2000. The cost of developing the layout would have been much more if it were to be taken up now, said Mr. Siddaramaiah apparently referring to the sky-rocketing cost of land acquisition.

 The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Tuesday said the requirement of Aadhaar for opening new bank accounts or applying for Tatkal passports will continue, while the deadline for linking it to existing bank accounts and PAN has been extended by the Supreme Court .

 Advancing India‟s TB elimination goal by five years ahead of the global target, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said, “India is determined to address the challenge of TB in mission mode. I am confident that India can be free of TB by 2025.”

India’s arms imports from U.S. up by 550%: report

 “India was the world‟s largest importer of major arms in 2013-17 and accounted for 12% of the global total. Its imports increased by 24% between 2008-12 and 2013-17,” SIPRI, which monitors global arms transfers, said in the report released .

 Investigators have retrieved the flight data recorder from the wreckage of a Bangladeshi airliner that crashed, killing at least 49 aboard, including the crew, when it attempted to land in Nepal‟s capital, officials said .

Apple’s Taiwanese supplier Wistron wins ’s approval for assembly facility

 A unit of Apple Inc.‟s Taiwanese contract manufacturer Wistron Corp. has won approval from Karnataka to build a new assembly facility in the State, signalling a potential expansion of iPhone assembly work in India. Wistron will invest ₹680 crore ($105 million) to develop this land and manufacture smartphones, Internet of things (IoT) products and biotech devices, the document showed.

Sensex cautious on weak global cues; TCS cracks 5%

 The benchmark BSE Sensex turned choppy on tepid cues from overseas market, despite positive macroeconomic data and appreciating rupee.  The 30-share barometer rose 44.58 points, or 0.13 %, to 33,962.52 in early session. However, a weak trend in other Asian markets following negative lead from Wall Street, restricted the gains.

Rupee opens 9 paise higher against US dollar

 The rupee inched higher by 9 paise to 64.95 against the US dollar in opening trade on better-than- expected inflation numbers and mild selling of the greenback by exporters amid sustained foreign capital inflows.
