Not only did we increase in size, we also increased in numbers. A brand new state of the art campus was added and classes 6 to 12 were shifted there. The year has been one of consolidation and expansion in many ways. Apart from the buildings, we have added a plethora of curricular and extracurricular activities. All our usual year - long festivities were conducted with zest, except for the Primary School Day where the students were enthusiastic and co-operative, but not Nature! Vardha and unseasonal rains, both played havoc before and during the function. Teacher trainings went off well all through the year. Many teachers have added new degrees to their names. • Monsoon Assemblages
MONSOON ASSEMBLAGES ELEMENTS OF THE URBAN HYDROLOGY OF SOUTH CHENNAI Literature Review Author: Michele Vianello Date: February 2017 ProJect Document Number: OV_Vianello_2017A Monsoon Assemblages sis a proJect funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. Grant Agreement No. 679873. This review looks at the literature regarding the hydrology and the built up environment of South Chennai as well as the different types of knowledge shaped around them. It examines academic papers, books and book chapters originating in a wide variety of disciplines (eg. architecture, social sciences, geography, hydrology) as well as non-academic texts (eg. newspaper articles, official administrative body websites, NGO reports) and maps (eg. from official agencies, academic papers). It particularly attempts to understand how the different monsoonal cycles have been playing a role in shaping the hydrology and the built up environment as well as the different types of knowledge used to interpret them and act upon them, or else how these cycles failed to be effectively captured in the knowledge production. Addressing these themes required to examine a very diverse literature, at times tackling very specific aspects of the issues at hand. A consistent attempt has been made to coherently extract those bits of information and build an overall picture of the area while laying out the context and identifying relevant issues for the Monsoon Assemblages research project. In spite of this, this review does not claim to be a complete investigation on the elements of the hydrology of South Chennai: the objective has been rather that of identifying which gaps, pertinent to the Monsoon Assemblages line of enquiry, will have to be filled as well as scoping the field for the overall research.

  • The Erstwhile Buckingham Canal, a Must for Revival As South-East Coast Inland Water Way
THE ERSTWHILE BUCKINGHAM CANAL, A MUST FOR REVIVAL AS SOUTH-EAST COAST INLAND WATER WAY,. The Central government through parliament act has declared the 1079 km length Canal a national inland waterway-4 and to invest around Rs 2000 crore to revive and make it navigable. V.Dhivakar “India has rich natural and water wealth, especially in eastern half of the land but vastly un-organised. Proper utility of waterway is the need of hour to develop this region and running cargo boats through the developed navigation waterways would benefit thousands of people here as well as in England. Kindly consider my proposal of linking the rivers Mahanadhi in Central province and River Cauvery  in Southern part by constructing a canal minimum with a draft of 3 metres. Initially the Government should construct a canal diverting excess water flowing from river Krishna and Godavari and utilize the same as water route to Madras along the coast line”. This was the ‘note’ written by none other than the ‘Delta-King’, Sir Arthur Thomas Cotton in the year 1859 sent to the then British Government at London. Sir Cotton, the man who came to India as an evangelist but he as a civil Engineer was appointed by the then East India Company bosses. Sir Cotton had conceived and developed during his glorious time three important Delta Check Dams in South India, on rivers Godavari, Krishna and Cauvery. When his ‘note’ went in to the hands of British Government, keeping in mind the turmoil it faced that time in Indian soil (East India Company’s administration over Indian states was taken over by British Queen due to the Indian Independence war which erupted in 1857), not interested in investing money in India for its development and unceremoniously rejected Sir Cotton’s advice.

Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu is located in the South East of India and lies at a mere 6.7m above mean sea level. Chennai is in a vulnerable location due to storm surges as well as tropical cyclones that bring about heavy rains and yearly floods. The 2004 Tsunami greatly affected the coast, and rapid urbanization, accompanied by the reduction in the natural drain capacity of the ground caused by encroachments on marshes, wetlands and other ecologically sensitive and permeable areas has contributed to repeat flood events in the city. Channelized rivers and canals contaminated through the presence of informal settlements and garbage has exasperated the situation. Natural and man-made water infrastructures that include, monsoon water harvesting and storage systems such as the Temple tanks and reservoirs have been polluted, and have fallen into disuse.

FITNESS Meet India’s fastest Ironman Triathlete Raghul Sankaranarayanan Reji Varghese JUNE 11, 2018 13:27 IST UPDATED: JUNE 12, 2018 17:36 IST An Ironman Triathlon is an extreme form of the Triathalon and consists of a 3.86-km swim, a 180-km bicycle ride and a 42.2-km marathon run, raced in that order and without a break. I It was a warm evening in Port Elizabeth, South Africa; the sun had just begun to sink over the horizon. Raghul Sankaranarayanan vaguely remembers the crowds lined up across the last kilometre cheering the weary contestants on. What’s clearly etched in his mind is the pain — the pain from having swum 3.8 kms, cycled 180 kms and run 42.2 kms without a break in the last 11 hours. With each thud of his shoes on the asphalt, he felt an electric pain shoot up from his ankles to his knees. There was a spasm on his right hamstring, which was close to locking up. He crossed the finish line and looked at his watch: it read 10 hours, 56 minutes and 59 seconds. Raghul was speechless. He had just broken the Indian record of 11 hours and 3 minutes jointly held by Kaustabh Radkar and Akshay Samel. He was now officially the fastest Indian Ironman. An Ironman Triathlon is an extreme form of the Triathalon and consists of a 3.86-km swim, a 180-km bicycle ride and a 42.2-km marathon run, raced in that order and without a break. It is widely considered one of the most gruelling one-day sporting events in the world, with a limited time of 17 hours to complete the race.
