Cole, Margaret E. Kemeny, Shelley E. Taylor, and Barbara R. Visscher University of California, Los Angeles This study examined the incidence of infectious and neoplastic diseases among 222 HIV- seronegative gay men who participated in the Natural History of AIDS Psychosocial Study. Those who concealed the expression of their homosexual identity experienced a significantly higher incidence of cancer (odds ratio = 3.18) and several infectious diseases (pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, and tuberculosis; odds ratio = 2.91) over a 5-year follow-up period. These effects could not be attributed to differences in age, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, repressive coping style, health-relevant behavioral patterns (e.g., drug use, exercise), anxiety, depression, or reporting biases (e.g., negative affectivity, social desirability). Results are interpreted in the context of previous data linking concealed homosexual identity to other physical health outcomes (e.g., HIV progression and psychosomatic symptomatology) and theories linking psychological inhibition to physical illness. The group aims to create a network for un- dergraduate students who wish to take an active role in current issues and research. MBS serves as a hub for not only Neuroscience majors, but all students interested in Psychology, Biology, Philosophy, Computer Science, etc. Our goal is to support an ea- ger multidisciplinary undergraduate community with the conversations and resources fundamental to Neuroscience today. Throughout the academic year, MBS hosts events spotlighting many different fac- ets of Neuroscience. We hold discussion sessions during which we informally discuss a topic of interest over coffee; previous topics include “The Neuroscience of Religion” and “NeuroEthics.” The group also hosts research presentations by BU professors and screenings of thought-provoking films containing neuroscience motifs. LGBT History
LGBT History Just like any other marginalized group that has had to fight for acceptance and equal rights, the LGBT community has a history of events that have impacted the community. This is a collection of some of the major happenings in the LGBT community during the 20th century through today. It is broken up into three sections: Pre-Stonewall, Stonewall, and Post-Stonewall. This is because the move toward equality shifted dramatically after the Stonewall Riots. Please note this is not a comprehensive list. Pre-Stonewall 1913 Alfred Redl, head of Austrian Intelligence, committed suicide after being identified as a Russian double agent and a homosexual. His widely-published arrest gave birth to the notion that homosexuals are security risks. 1919 Magnus Hirschfeld founded the Institute for Sexology in Berlin. One of the primary focuses of this institute was civil rights for women and gay people. 1933 On January 30, Adolf Hitler banned the gay press in Germany. In that same year, Magnus Herschfeld’s Institute for Sexology was raided and over 12,000 books, periodicals, works of art and other materials were burned. Many of these items were completely irreplaceable. 1934 Gay people were beginning to be rounded up from German-occupied countries and sent to concentration camps. Just as Jews were made to wear the Star of David on the prison uniforms, gay people were required to wear a pink triangle. WWII Becomes a time of “great awakening” for queer people in the United States. The homosocial environments created by the military and number of women working outside the home provide greater opportunity for people to explore their sexuality. -

Levels of Homophobia Negative Positive Repulsion Pity Tolerance Acceptance Support Admiration Appreciation Nurturance Negative Levels: Repulsion: Homosexuality is seen as “a crime against nature.” Homosexual people are sick, crazy, sinful, immoral, wicket, etc. Anything is justified to change them, it: prison, hospitalization, from behavior therapy to shock treatment. Pity: Heterosexual chauvinism. Heterosexuality is more mature and certainly to be preferred. Any possibility of being straight should be reinforced and those who seem to be “born that way” should be pitied. Tolerance: Homosexuality is just a phase of adolescent development that many people go through and ‘grow out of’. Thus lesbians, gays and bisexuals are less mature than heterosexual people and should not be put in positions of authority because they are still working on adolescent behaviors. Acceptance: Still implies that there is something that must be accepted. Characterized by such statements as ‘you’re not gay to me, you’re just a person’. Denies the social and legal realities, while ignoring the pain of invisibility and the stress of closeted behavior. Positive Levels: Support: Work to safeguard the rights of LGBT people. May be uncomfortable themselves, but are aware of the social climate and irrational unfairness. Admiration: Acknowledges that being LGBT in our society takes strength. Such people are willing to truly look at themselves and work on their own homophobic attitudes. Appreciation: Values the diversity of people and sees LGBT people as a valid part of diversity. These people are willing to combat homophobia in themselves and others. Nurturance: Assumes that LGBT people are indispensable to society. They view all homosexual people with genuine affection and delight and are willing to be open and public advocates. -

However, many reporters, editors and producers continue to face challenges covering these issues in a complex, often rhetorically charged, climate. Philip Smith (Parochial Vicar, Most Blessed Sacrament Church and Corpus Christi University Parish, Toledo, OH --- Diocese of Toledo) Myth: The Catholic Church encourages a negative attitude towards people who identify as homosexual. Catholic Church Teaching: The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that persons with homosexual tendencies “must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided” (CCC 2358). The Catholic Church continues Jesus’ mission in offering salvation to all people including those with same-sex attractions. The Catholic Church welcomes parishioners with same-sex attractions as God’s beloved sons and daughters and strives to share with them the joy of the Good News of God’s unconditional love. Myth: The Church condemns persons with same-sex attractions and believes that persons with same-sex attraction should just “pray the gay away”. Catholic Church Teaching: While the Catholic Church teaches that homosexual acts are morally unacceptable, the Church teaches that homosexual inclinations are not sinful in themselves. The Church recognizes that in a significant number of persons their homosexual desires are “deep- seated” and that these desires will accompany them throughout their life. The Catholic Church does not endorse an approach that requires all persons with same-sex attractions to become “straight” or heterosexual. The Catholic Church teaches that God calls all persons, including those with same-sex attractions, to live the virtue of chastity. For persons with same-sex attractions, living chastely includes not engaging in homosexual acts. -

COMING OUT FOR KIDS: RECOGNIZING, RESPECTING, AND REPRESENTING LGBTQ YOUTH Barbara Fedders* I. INTRODUCTION While they may have kept them secret, adolescents have always had same- sex romantic and sexual relationships. They have always transgressed gender norms. And beginning thirty years ago,' increasing numbers of young people have "come out"'2 -at ever younger ages 3-as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans- gender, or queer. Still others question their sexual orientation and gender iden- tity. Yet even the most thoughtful and conscientious child advocates traditionally have not acknowledged these young people or addressed the unique stressors they face.4 Building on the pioneering advocacy of attorneys from Legal Services for Children, the National Center for Lesbian Rights, and the Lambda Legal Defense Fund, I seek in this article to respond to that omission.5 I argue here * Clinical instructor at the Harvard Law School Criminal Justice Institute. Chapter 14: Other Indicia of Animus Against LGBT People by State and Local Officials, 1980-Present In this chapter, we draw from the 50 state reports to provide a sample of comments made by state legislators, governors, judges, and other state and local policy makers and officials which show animus toward LGBT people. Such statements likely both deter LGBT people from seeking state and local government employment and cause them to be closeted if they are employed by public agencies. In addition, these statements often serve as indicia of why laws extending legal protections to LGBT people are opposed or repealed. As the United States Supreme Court has recognized, irrational discrimination is often signaled by indicators of bias, and bias is unacceptable as a substitute for legitimate governmental interests.1 “[N]egative attitudes or fear, unsubstantiated by factors which are properly cognizable…are not permissible bases” for governmental decision-making.2 This concern has special applicability to widespread and persistent negative attitudes toward gay and transgender minorities. As Justice O‟Connor stated in her concurring opinion in Lawrence v. Texas, 539 U.S. 558, 580-82 (2003): We have consistently held…that some objectives, such as “a bare...desire to harm a politically unpopular group,” are not legitimate state interests. … Moral disapproval of this group [homosexuals], like a bare desire to harm the group, is an interest that is insufficient to satisfy rational basis review under the Equal Protection Clause. 1 Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama v. THE BIBLE AND SAME-SEX RELATIONSHIPS Fictions and Facts Fiction #1 Homosexuality is a major topic of concern in the Bible. Fact: The Bible contains only three or four clear references to male same-sex love and only one possible reference to female same-sex love. Moreover, “homosexuality” itself is a modern term, coined in the late 19th century, and represents forms of same-sex love not present in the cultural context of the ancient Mediterranean world from which the Bible comes. Fiction #2 The Bible’s allusions to same-sex relationships are all negative. Fact: The Bible depicts several very positive same-sex relationships, including the probably erotic relationship of Jonathan and David and that of the Centurion and his “boy-lover” in the Gospel of Matthew (see below). In addition, the words of Ruth to her mother-in-law Naomi, two women, are so representative of modern understandings of intimate relationships that they are most often found in marriage ceremonies (Ruth 1: 16-17). Fiction #3 The Bible views homosexuality as a sin and indeed as a greater sin than all others. Fact: The Bible rarely mentions same-sex love.
