DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER RELATIONSHIPS WHY IT MATTERS Domestic violence is defined as a pattern of behaviors utilized by one partner (the batterer or abuser) to exert and maintain control over another person (the survivor or victim) where there exists an intimate and/or dependent relationship. Experts believe that domestic violence occurs in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community with the same amount of frequency and severity as in the heterosexual community. Homophobia and Transphobia Illumination Project Curriculum Andrew S. Forshee, Ph.D., Early Education & Family Studies Portland Community College Portland, Oregon INTRODUCTION Homophobia and transphobia are complicated topics that touch on core identity issues. Most people tend to conflate sexual orientation with gender identity, thus confusing two social distinctions. Understanding the differences between these concepts provides an opportunity to build personal knowledge, enhance skills in allyship, and effect positive social change. GROUND RULES (1015 minutes) Materials: chart paper, markers, tape. Due to the nature of the topic area, it is essential to develop ground rules for each student to follow. Ask students to offer some rules for participation in the postperformance workshop (i.e., what would help them participate to their fullest). Attempt to obtain a group consensus before adopting them as the official “social contract” of the group. Useful guidelines include the following (Bonner Curriculum, 2009; Hardiman, Jackson, & Griffin, 2007): Respect each viewpoint, opinion, and experience. Use “I” statements – avoid speaking in generalities. The conversations in the class are confidential (do not share information outside of class). Set own boundaries for sharing. Share air time. Listen respectfully. No blaming or scapegoating. Focus on own learning. Clear definitions also provide a context and platform for discussion. Homophobia: a psychological term originally developed by Weinberg (1973) to define an irrational hatred, anxiety, and or fear of homosexuality. -

LGBT History
LGBT History Just like any other marginalized group that has had to fight for acceptance and equal rights, the LGBT community has a history of events that have impacted the community. This is a collection of some of the major happenings in the LGBT community during the 20th century through today. It is broken up into three sections: Pre-Stonewall, Stonewall, and Post-Stonewall. This is because the move toward equality shifted dramatically after the Stonewall Riots. Please note this is not a comprehensive list. Pre-Stonewall 1913 Alfred Redl, head of Austrian Intelligence, committed suicide after being identified as a Russian double agent and a homosexual. His widely-published arrest gave birth to the notion that homosexuals are security risks. 1919 Magnus Hirschfeld founded the Institute for Sexology in Berlin. One of the primary focuses of this institute was civil rights for women and gay people. 1933 On January 30, Adolf Hitler banned the gay press in Germany. In that same year, Magnus Herschfeld’s Institute for Sexology was raided and over 12,000 books, periodicals, works of art and other materials were burned. Many of these items were completely irreplaceable. 1934 Gay people were beginning to be rounded up from German-occupied countries and sent to concentration camps. Just as Jews were made to wear the Star of David on the prison uniforms, gay people were required to wear a pink triangle. WWII Becomes a time of “great awakening” for queer people in the United States. The homosocial environments created by the military and number of women working outside the home provide greater opportunity for people to explore their sexuality. -

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com A butch-femme couple The concept of butch and femme identities have long been hotly debated within the participating in a group lesbian community, yet even achieving a consensus as to exactly what the terms wedding ceremony in "butch" and "femme" mean can be extraordinarily difficult. In recent years, these Taiwan. words have come to describe a wide spectrum of individuals and their relationships. It is easiest, then, to begin with an examination of butch-femme culture and meaning from a historical perspective. Butch and femme emerged in the early twentieth century as a set of sexual and emotional identities among lesbians. To give a general but oversimplified idea of what butch-femme entails, one might say that butches exhibit traditionally "masculine" traits while femmes embody "feminine" ones. Although oral histories have demonstrated that butch-femme couples were seen in America as far back as the turn of the twentieth century, and that they were particularly conspicuous in the 1930s, it is the mid-century working-class and bar culture that most clearly illustrate the archetypal butch-femme dynamic. Arguably, during the period of the 1940s through the early 1960s, butches and femmes were easiest to recognize and characterize: butches with their men's clothing, DA haircuts, and suave manners often found their more traditionally styled femme counterparts, wearing dresses, high heels, and makeup, in the gay bars. A highly visible and accepted way of living within the lesbian community, butch-femme was in fact considered the norm among lesbians during the 1950s. -

Levels of Homophobia Negative Positive Repulsion Pity Tolerance Acceptance Support Admiration Appreciation Nurturance Negative Levels: Repulsion: Homosexuality is seen as “a crime against nature.” Homosexual people are sick, crazy, sinful, immoral, wicket, etc. Anything is justified to change them, it: prison, hospitalization, from behavior therapy to shock treatment. Pity: Heterosexual chauvinism. Heterosexuality is more mature and certainly to be preferred. Any possibility of being straight should be reinforced and those who seem to be “born that way” should be pitied. Tolerance: Homosexuality is just a phase of adolescent development that many people go through and ‘grow out of’. Thus lesbians, gays and bisexuals are less mature than heterosexual people and should not be put in positions of authority because they are still working on adolescent behaviors. Acceptance: Still implies that there is something that must be accepted. Characterized by such statements as ‘you’re not gay to me, you’re just a person’. Denies the social and legal realities, while ignoring the pain of invisibility and the stress of closeted behavior. Positive Levels: Support: Work to safeguard the rights of LGBT people. May be uncomfortable themselves, but are aware of the social climate and irrational unfairness. Admiration: Acknowledges that being LGBT in our society takes strength. Such people are willing to truly look at themselves and work on their own homophobic attitudes. Appreciation: Values the diversity of people and sees LGBT people as a valid part of diversity. These people are willing to combat homophobia in themselves and others. Nurturance: Assumes that LGBT people are indispensable to society. They view all homosexual people with genuine affection and delight and are willing to be open and public advocates. -

The general attitude towards LGBT persons in Montenegro is, by key stakeholders, labelled as conservative, patriarchal, negative, and as characterised by a practice of "don’t ask, don’t tell." The majority of the population considers homosexuality an illness. However, there are also signs of increased public debate and visibility. 2. There are no reports on bans on LGBT events or organisations. However, it is noted that, due to the risk of encountering hostile reactions, LGBT persons largely try to pass unnoticed and meetings are largely organised in private. At the time of writing there was no LGBT NGO registered as such in Montenegro. -

Find more at uua.org/lgbtq/identity This handout provides a non-comprehensive list of ways that people identify their sexual orientation. A comprehensive list would need to be updated frequently with emerging thought on sexual orientation. If you come across terminology that is not included here, look it up online. There are always new things to learn about sexual orientation! Even though many people associate the abbreviation LGBTQIA with sexual orientation, it also includes terms related to gender identity. The last four letters stand for transgender, queer and/or questioning, intersex, and ally and/or asexual. Asexual (adjective): Not sexually attracted to anyone and/or having no desire to act on sexual attraction to anyone. Does not necessarily mean sexless. Asexual people may experience affectional (romantic) attraction and may engage in sexual activity. Sometimes shortened to ace. Bisexual (adjective): Attracted to people of one’s own gender and people of other genders. Two common misconceptions are that bisexual people are attracted to everyone and anyone, and that they just haven’t “decided what they really are.” Often shortened to bi. See also pansexual and queer. Gay (adjective): Primarily or only attracted to people of the same sex. The word is often used specifically about men. Heterosexual (adjective): Primarily or only attracted to people of the sex considered opposite one’s own. Homosexual (adjective): Primarily or only attracted to people of the same sex; a synonym for gay. The words homosexual and heterosexual are seen by many today as medicalized terms that should be retired from common use. -

The nature of homophobia and how it might be overcome Michael King Division of Psychiatry (Faculty of Brain Sciences) University College London Outline • What is homophobia? • Homophobia across history, culture and time • The forms of homophobia • Its effects • Its possible origins • How it might be overcome What is homophobia? • Prejudice, stigma and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. – Transgender is included because opposition contains much of the same “moral outrage” at sex and gender – Can be severe within families, unlike other prejudice – Becomes an “internalised” sense of shame Homophobia • First used by George Weinberg in 1972 • Adopted to reflect – an irrational fear – discriminator’s fears about his (or her) own sexual feelings Has homophobia always been with us? • Homosexuality arose as a term in late 19th C. • Same sex behaviour previously regarded as sin • Many religions object to the sin of same sex behaviour – Greatest disapproval found in the Abrahamic faiths • But not all – e.g. Shinto is silent on homosexuality, – "homosexuality" is a Western concept, – Lack of scriptures or holy texts • Few societies have tolerated, much less accepted as equal, homosexual relationships.
