in the MiamiValley History Offke Aeronautical Systems Center Air Force Materiel Command ii FOREWORD Less than one hundred years ago, Lord Kelvin, the most prominent scientist of his generation, remarked that he had not “the smallest molecule of faith’ in any form of flight other than ballooning. Within a decade of his damningly pessimistic statement, the Wright brothers were routinely puttering through the skies above Huffman Prairie, pirouetting about in their frail pusher biplanes. They were there because, unlike Kelvin, they saw opportunity, not difficulty, challenge, not impossibility. And they had met that challenge, seized that opportunity, by taking the work of their minds, transforming it by their hands, making a series of gliders and, then, finally, an actual airplane that they flew. Flight testing was the key to their success. The history of flight testing encompassesthe essential history of aviation itself. For as long as humanity has aspired to fly, men and women of courage have moved resolutely from intriguing concept to practical reality by testing the result of their work in actual flight. In the eighteenth and nineteenth century, notable pioneers such asthe French Montgolfier brothers, the German Otto Lilienthal, and the American Octave Chanute blended careful study and theoretical speculation with the actual design, construction, and testing of flying vehicles. Flight testing reallycame ofage with the Wright bro!hers whocarefullycombined a thorough understanding of the problem and potentiality of flight with-for their time-sophisticated ground and flight-test methodolo- gies and equipment. After their success above the dunes at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17,1903, the brothers determined to refine their work and generate practical aircraft capable of routine operation. -

Western Historical Manuscript Collection Kansas City KC263 – Katharine Wright Haskell (1874 – 1929) Papers, 1922-1928 (55 folders) Provenance: These letters were received as accession number 610kc from Mrs. Henry C. Haskell, the widow of Henry C. Haskell, stepson of Katharine Wright Haskell. Mrs. Henry C. Haskell loaned this material to Western Historical Manuscript Collection for microfilming on 20 October 1990. Biography: Katharine Wright was born in Dayton, Ohio on August 19, 1874, the last child and only daughter of Bishop and Mrs. Milton Wright of the United Brethren Church. Her four older brothers included Wilbur and Orville Wright, the first men to accomplish powered flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17, 1903. Katharine graduated from Oberlin College of Ohio in 1898 and after, taught Latin at Steele high school in Dayton and helped her brothers raise money for their famous project. Giving speeches and writing letters on behalf of the airplane experiment, Katharine was known to have been as necessary to the success of the flight at Kitty Hawk as were her brothers. Always maintaining close ties with her alma mater, she was elected to the Board of Trustees of Oberlin College. Katharine had met and become friends with Henry Haskell and with Isabel Cummings while the three were students at Oberlin College. Henry and Isabel were married in 1901. The couple were frequent guests at the Wright home in Dayton over the years, and when Isabel died in 1923, Henry resumed a correspondence with Katharine. In time, a romance developed. Wilbur, Orville and Katharine, each unmarried, lived together in Dayton. -

MS-1: Wright Brothers Collection PART III WRIGHT FAMILY PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION This series includes many original photographic prints made by the Wrights from their own negatives shortly after the images were taken. The Wrights exposed at least 303 gelatin dry plate negatives in the course of documenting their process of invention. All of their glass plate negatives were given to the Library of Congress in 1949, but many of their original prints remained with the Estate of Orville Wright. Many of the Wright Brothers’ original negatives were damaged in Dayton’s great flood of 1913, when they were submerged for up to four days. The Wright State University collection includes some images for which no negatives exist at the Library of Congress and so many of these prints are unique. In addition, this collection includes hundreds of prints collected by the Wrights through their association with other aviation pioneers such as Octave Chanute, and a great variety of aeronautical prints either collected by them, or sent to them by well-wishers through the years. While the major prints exist in both collections, both the Wright State University collection and the Wright collection in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress contain many images that are unique to each collection. Wilbur and Orville Wright began photographing their experiences on the Outer Banks using a 4 x 5 inch dry plate camera. In 1902 they purchased a Korona view camera which used 5 x 7 inch dry plates. They developed their negatives and made prints in the darkroom they set up at their home in Dayton. -

The Reims Air Races
Reims Air races and the Gordon Bennett Trophy Bleriot's cross-Channel flight excited Europe as nothing else had. The City of Reims and the French vintners of the Champagne region decided to sponsor a week of aviation exhibition and competition, putting up large purses in prize money, the most prestigious being the International Aviation Cup, known as the Gordon Bennett Trophy, after its sponsor, James Gordon Bennett, the flamboyant American publisher of the New York Herald and the Paris Herald. The meet attracted the cream of European society, from royalty and generals to ambassadors and the merely wealthy, to the Betheny Plain outside Reims from August 22 to 29, 1909. While there were to be many other such meets before and after World War 1, none would match Reims for grandeur and elegance or for sheer excitement. The major European manufacturers, all French, entered various events. There were 'planes by Bleriot, Voisin, Antoinette, and Farman, and even several French-built Wrights. The Wrights themselves had passed on an invitation to race at Reims, which was awkward since the Gordon Bennett Trophy was crowned with a large replica of a Wright Flyer. The Aero Club of America, which had sponsored the Scientific American trophy won by Curtiss a year earlier, turned to Curtiss. Curtiss' June Bug was not as well developed a plane as the Wright machines (and possibly the Wrights were hoping to drive this point home if Curtiss failed at Reims) and while it was more maneuverable than the European planes, it was not nearly as fast. 1909 Voisin 1 Curtiss worked feverishly to produce a more powerful engine and stripped down his airplane to give it greater speed. -

Wright Company The Wright Company was incorporated on November 22, 1909. The Wright Company factory was completed in November 1910 and a duplicate factory building was erected in 1911. The buildings continued in use until the Wright Company was sold, October 15, 1915.
