Amos, LEED AP, Grant Writing MIAMI-ERIE CANAL DEVELOPMENT/TOURISM PLAN PDG helped the City of St. Marys apply for a $50,000 LGIF grant to create a development/ Project Relevance tourism plan for the historic canal corridor between Fort Loramie in Shelby County to Delphos ∙ Vicinity to Mercer County in Allen/Van Wert County. The study is a collaboration with the Cities of St. Marys and Delphos ∙ Grant funding and the Villages of Spencerville, New Bremen, Minster, and Fort Loramie. The partners are dedicated to raising awareness of the historical, educational, recreational and ecological value of the canal greenway. St. Marys is serving as a clearinghouse for canal related events and information. It is the goal of the collaborating partners to be the representative voice to local, state and federal government officials. Additional goals include garnering grassroots support for an enhanced canal, strengthening canal partnerships, and promoting the Miami and Erie Canal Heritage Corridor. Weekend Fly-In: Dayton, OH (KMGY) August 25‐28, 2016 Watch out! SEBS will exceed the limits of our southern boundaries and invade the Midwest region! After multiple requests, we will head back to Dayton, OH, the Birthplace of Aviation! Our last visit was in 2005 and much has happened since then including the National Museum of the US Air Force opening a new fourth hangar this June! We will visit the National Museum of the US Air Force as well as four of the five National Historic Landmarks within the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park including the Wright Cycle Company building, Hoover Block, Huffman Prairie Flying Field, 1905 Wright Flyer III, and Hawthorn Hill! Since we are going out of bounds, we are also changing logistics! The most important change is that we are hiring a charter bus for transportation (no 15 passenger vans). Also, with this fly‐in being in the summer and most attendees historically arriving early to beat afternoon buildups and thunderstorms, we are planning Thursday activities which are optional. For Thursday arrivals, there will be three bus shuttles from the airport to the hotel occurring at 11:30 am, 1:00 pm, and 5:00 pm. For those of you that want to participate in the Thursday activities, you should plan to arrive in time to secure your aircraft and catch the 1:00 pm shuttle. For any early arrivals prior to Thursday, we will have a bus that will depart the hotel at 10:30 am for the airport, so that you can tour the Wright “B” Flyer hangar and museum (see below). -

Preface: the Wright Myth
P R E F A C E : T H E W R I G H T M Y T H t is hard to get flesh and bones on these two men. They come to us as stick figures in vests and white shirts, with their hard shoes Ihanging off the back of their flyers. They seem to not be of the earth and have few worldly desires after the desire to fly. Historians tramp from the Outer Banks to Dayton, Ohio, then to the Smithsonian in Washington or to the Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, to see the Wrights’ bicycle shop. And after seeing the Wright Flyer in Washington or the markers in Kitty Hawk, they sit down to write the “Wright story.” It is a fact that the two men in the derbies have eluded historians and the rest of us for a long time. They were elusive men, after all, and so the questions linger behind the legend and the façade of the two Arrow collar young men who dazzled the world in 1903. History would have us believe that the Wright brothers were one in the same: Somehow, they both invented manned flight. They both had the same epiphanic moments while working on their gliders in Kitty Hawk. They both studied birds and deduced that wing warping was the key to controlled flight. They both worked out the complex aeronautical data that went into determining the amount of lift, the shape, the very design of a wing that would enable them to ascend to the heavens. -

A guide to teaching the invention of flight Wright Brothers Teacher’s Guide This curriculum guide was developed in partnership by Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park and the Dayton Daily News Newspapers In Education (NIE) program as an outreach to students. This information focuses on the Wright brothers’ work in Dayton, Ohio, which led to the invention of free, controlled and sustained flight in a power-driven, heavier-than-air machine. As we approach the 100th anniversary of flight and increased attention is given to the achievements of the Wright brothers, this guide — based on state and national standards — is intended to enrich your existing classroom curricula. Included is background information on the Wright brothers with guided questions, teacher instructions and six student activity sheets. Supplemental materials included are a list of Web sites and books, an Aviation Trail brochure and Dayton area map. We hope you find this to be a useful educational tool for your classroom. 3745-1-21 Great Miami river drainage basin. (A) The water bodies listed in table 21-1 of this rule are ordered from downstream to upstream. Tributaries of a water body are indented. The aquatic life habitat, water supply and recreation use designations are defined in rule 3745-1-07 of the Administrative Code. The state resource water use designation is defined in rule 3745-1-05 of the Administrative Code. The most stringent criteria associated with any one of the use designations assigned to a water body will apply to that water body. (B) Figure 1 of the appendix to this rule is a generalized map of the Great Miami river drainage basin. A generalized map of Ohio outlining the twenty-three major drainage basins and listing associated rule numbers in Chapter 3745-1 of the Administrative Code is in figure 1 of the appendix to rule 3745-1-08 of the Administrative Code. (C) RM, as used in this rule, stands for river mile and refers to the method used by the Ohio environmental protection agency to identify locations along a water body. Mileage is defined as the lineal distance from the downstream terminus (i.e., mouth) and moving in an upstream direction.
