ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOR OF ANT BELONOPELTA DELETRIX MANN (HYMENOPTERA FORMICIDAE) BY EDWARD O. WILSON Biological Laboratories, Harvard University Belonopelta Mayr is a little-known genus of ponerine ants represen.ted by two species, B. attenuata Mayr of Colombia and B. deletrix Mann, the latter hitherto re- corded fro,m Honduras and Chiapas (Wheeler, 1935; Brown, 1950). It is of more than usual interest because of the aberrant, presumably raptorial modification of the mandibles. To the present time only several s.pecimens have been mentioned in the literature, and nothing has been recorded concerning its biology. B. deletrix was recently encountered by the present author near the village of Pueblo Nuevo, Veracruz, in the Cosolapa Valley ten miles south of Cosolapa. This record represents a considerable northwestward extension f the range of the genus. The Cosolapa Valley, like most o.f this part of Mexico, is under heavy cultivation, and the native forest is limited to precari,ous sanctuaries on the steep slopes of numerous hills and mountains which rise from the valley floor. Pueblo Nuevo is located in the saddle of a pass through one o,f the lower hill ranges. To the northwest, and across the nearby Cosolapa River, there is a large tract of true rainforest, i.e., a forest in which the trees are several-storied, with a few "emergents" over 100 feet in height, and heavily festooned in the up- per reaches by lianas and epiphytes. The upper stratum forms a closed canopy in the undisturbed portions, and herbaceous undergrowth is very sparse. The forest is being continuously high-graded by crude native lumber- ing methods, and as a result clearings and patches of scrubby second growth occur throughout. -

Chapter 9 IDENTIFICATION GUIDE TO THE ANT GENERA OF BORNEO Yoshiaki HASHIMOTO Introduction Ants are one of the most abundant and diverse animal groups in tropical ecosystems (Stork, 1987, 1991), and they function at many levels in these ecosystems - as predators and prey, as detritivores, mutualists, and herbivores (Hölldobler and Wilson, 1990). Thus, ants have the potential to yield more meaningful biodiversity data than many other organisms, such as plants, birds, and butterflies. Moreover, since most species have stationary, perennial nests with fairly restricted foraging ranges, ants have a potential role as indicators of environmental change. Because of the potential usefulness, inventory of ants has been viewed as an important task in tropical biodiversity and conservation studies (Agosti et al., 2000). The most difficult part of ant inventory in tropical region is identification process. Inventory data are usually analyzed by relying on the presence or absence of species. However, identification of tropical ant specimens to species will be very difficult or impossible, because most groups of the ants have yet to be studied in detail. This difficulty makes the recognition of morphospecies a necessary part of inventory studies for ants (Agosti et al., 2000). The identifying ants to genus-level are not impossible, because excellent identification-key to ant genera of the all parts of the world is available in Bolton (1994). Thus, for sorting ant specimens into morphospecies, they should be identified to genus (i.e., “ Ant species 1 and species 2” to “Aenictus sp. 1 and Camponotus sp.1”). This makes it easy to handle and analyze the data. -

In this study, we compare and analyze diferent ant taxa hindwing morphologies with phylogenetic hypotheses of the Family Formicidae (Hymenoptera). Te hindwings are classifed into three Typologies based on progressive veins reduction. Tis analysis follows a revision of the hindwing morphology in 291 extant and eight fossil genera. Te distribution of diferent Typologies was analyzed in the two Clades: Formicoid and Poneroid. Te results show a diferent distribution of Typologies, with a higher genera percentage of hindwings of Typology I in the Clade Poneroid. A further analysis, based on genetic afnities, was performed by dividing the Clades into Subclades, showing a constant presence of hindwings of Typology I in almost all the Subclades, albeit with a diferent percentage. Te presence of hindwings of Typology I (hypothesized as more ancestral) in the Subclades, indicates the genera that could be morphologically more similar to their ancestral ones. Tis study represents the frst revision of the ants’ hindwings, showing an overview of the distribution of diferent Typologies. -

The Ant Genus Simopelta (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)*
THE ANT GENUS SIMOPELTA (HYMENOPTERA: FORMICIDAE)* BY WILLIAM H. GOTWALD JR. AND WILLIAM L. BROWN, JR. Department of Entomology, Cornell University Ithaca, New York The taxonomic history of Simopelta (subfamily Ponerinae, tribe Ponerini) has been discussed in detail by W. M. Wheeler (I935) and by Borgmeier (I95O). Borgmeier was the first to describe the queen of any species in the genus that of S. peryandei-- which he showed deserved to be called "dichthadiiform", or belonging to a particular form of queen caste characterized by extreme reduction or loss of eyes, loss of wings, hypertrophy of petiole and gaster, and other characters. He explained its "great similarity to certain females of Eciton" by "convergence in its hypogaeic way o,f life", a statement that is puzzling because, as Father Borgmeier well knows, .Eciton is. not really "hypogaeic" in its habits, at least as compared to the majority of ants that spend most of their time on or below the ground level. _At any rate, as we shall show in this paper, the. convergence be- tween the queens of at least one Simopelta species and certain army ants, so discerningly noted by Father Borgmeier, is only one aspect of the army-ant or legionary lifeform that two and perhaps all Simo- pelta species share with the "true" army ants of subfamily Dorylinae. It is the purpose of this contribution to list and key the workers of the knmvn species of Simopelta, to describe two new species of the genus, and to set forth on the behavior of one species some o.bserva- tions, however fragmentary, that will establish that it follows the army-ant way of life in important respects. -

Rediscovery of the putatively extinct ant species Simopelta minima (Brandão) (Hymenoptera, Formicidae), with a discussion on rarity and conservation status of ant species. Simopelta minima (Brandão, 1989) was originally described based on four workers collected in soil samples from a small cocoa plantation in Ilhéus, state of Bahia, northeastern Brazil. In the subsequent years after the description, this cocoa plantation was eliminated and the species was then considered extinct by the Brazilian environmental institutions. The recent rediscovery of S. minima workers in subterranean pitfall trap samples from Viçosa, state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, over 1.000 km distant from type locality, suggests that the rarity and vulnerability status of some ant species may be explained by insufficient sampling of adequate microhabitats, in time and space.
