Com festivais de cinema a serem cancelados pelo mundo fora, incluindo o prestigiado Festival de Cannes e grande parte dos eventos colegas do MOTELX na Méliès International Festivals Federation, podemos então concluir que a realização da 14.ª edição do MOTELX no cinema São Jorge é, em ano de pandemia, um verdadeiro privilégio. No entanto, alguns ajustes terão de ser feitos para acomodar as directrizes da Direcção Geral de Saúde e para seguirmos todas as novas regras, sem com isso sacrificar a intensidade da experiência MOTELX. Assim sendo, o Festival conta este ano com mais dois dias, para que o público possa desfrutar do máximo de sessões em total conforto e segurança e para que o evento se possa realizar da forma mais aproximada possível aos moldes tradicionais. Encontrámos uma forma de expurgar durante o Festival a situação em que vivemos recuperando um dos primeiros filmes de Lars von Trier, “Epidemic”, que, através de uma meta-narrativa, nos remete para aquilo que estamos a viver, ou seja, um universo onde a ficção e a realidade trocaram de posição. Outro efeito secundário da quarentena é uma retrospectiva intitulada “Pesadelo Americano: Racismo e o Cinema de Terror”, focada na evidenciação do racismo no cinema de terror norte-americano no seguimento da reacção mundial ao vídeo da detenção de George Floyd. Convidamos a uma revisitação dos filmes que tiveram a problemática do racismo sistémico no centro da sua narrativa, acrescentando diferentes visões para a discussão que decorre e que é absolutamente central para a história da nossa civilização. O restante alinhamento do Festival não sofre alterações: há uma competição de longas europeias e curtas portuguesas, filmes de terror dos cinco continentes, Warm-Up, apresentações, masterclasses e estreias mundiais, europeias e nacionais - sendo a maior “Antebellum”, com Janelle Monáe. De destacar a presença do maior cineasta português da actualidade, Pedro Costa, vencedor da última edição do Festival de Locarno com “Vitalina Varela”, ao qual a secção Quarto Perdido é este ano dedicada. Outro momento a salientar é a presença da produtora BRO, a equipa portuguesa de “Color Out of Space”, que nos vem relatar a sua experiência de filmar Lovecraft em Sintra, pelas mãos de Richard Stanley, e a interpretação de Nicolas Cage. São sete dias em que experienciaremos aquele medo bom e seguro que o género providencia. Bem-vindos ao MOTELX 2020!
With film festivals being cancelled around the world, including the prestigious Cannes Film Festival and a large part of MOTELX’s fellow events at the Méliès International Festivals Federation, we can conclude that the 14th edition of MOTELX at the São Jorge Cinema during a pandemic is a real privilege. However, some adjustments will have to be made to accommodate the guidelines of the Directorate-General of Health and to follow all the new rules, without sacrificing the intensity of the MOTELX experience. Therefore, the Festival has two more days this year, so that the public can enjoy the maximum number of screenings in total comfort and safety and so that the event can take place in a manner as close as possible to the traditional molds. We found a way to purge the situation in which we are living in during the Festival by recovering one of Lars von Trier’s first films, “Epidemic”, which, through a meta-narrative, takes us back to what we are experiencing – that is, a universe where fiction and reality change positions. Another side effect of the quarantine is a retrospective entitled “American Nightmare: Racism and Horror Cinema”, focused on the portrayal of racism in American horror movies following the worldwide reaction to the video of George Floyd’s arrest. We invite you to revisit the films that had the problem of systemic racism at the center of the narrative, adding different views to the ongoing discussion that is absolutely central to the history of our civilization. The rest of the Festival’s alignment remains unchanged: competition for European features and Portuguese shorts, horror films from five continents, Warm-Up, presentations, masterclasses, and world, European, and national premieres - the biggest being “Antebellum”, with Janelle Monáe. A special highlight is the presence of Pedro Costa, the greatest Portuguese filmmaker alive today and the winner of the last edition of the Locarno Festival with “Vitalina Varela”, to which the Lost Room section is dedicated this year. Another highlight-worthy moment is the presence of producer BRO, the Portuguese team in “Color Out of Space”, who comes to tell us all about their experience filming Lovecraft in Sintra through the lens of Richard Stanley and starring Nicolas Cage. Existente desde 1996, o Prémio Méliès d’Or é uma competição única: é o único concurso organizado entre festivais em colaboração na Europa. Com a organização desta competição, a Federação (MIFF) pretende orientar a renovação do cinema de género em todo o continente. Em 2019, a Federação distinguiu “In Fabric” de Peter Strickland e “Wild” de Jan Verdijk no festival de Sitges. O primeiro destaque da selecção de 2020 do MOTELX é a primeira presença italiana com “Darkness”, da realizadora Emanuela Rossi. Outrora um dos países mais emblemáticos do género - pátria de Argento, Fulci ou Bava - tem vindo a desaparecer do mapa do cinema fantástico europeu. Em situação inversa está a Alemanha, presença regular na competição, que este ano nos propõe “Pelican Blood”, filme realizado por Katrin Gebbe que retrata a luta de uma mulher na adopção de uma criança diabólica. O francês “Hunted”, surpreendente primeira obra de Vincent Paronnaud - que co-realizou “Persépolis” com Marjane Satrapi -, em que uma mulher é perseguida por dois homens na floresta, narrativa clássica do cinema exploitation dos anos 70 que é, no entanto, desconstruída ao longo do filme. Já o britânico “Amulet” é um rape and revenge sobrenatural escrito e realizado pela conhecida actriz Romola Garai. Finalmente, a Rússia volta a marcar presença, depois de “Why Don’t You Just Die!” vencer no ano passado, dando a entender uma produção cada vez mais séria de terror neste país. “Sputnik” é um híbrido de terror/sci-fi que tem lugar na URSS da Guerra Fria, onde ameaças extraterrestres coexistem com a paranóia corporativa, muito à maneira de “Alien”. Outra estreia na competição é “Stranger”, o primeiro filme ucraniano exibido no MOTELX. Tal como o nome indica, é um exercício de surrealismo visual ao estilo de Lynch, em que uma detective investiga o desaparecimento de uma equipa de natação sincronizada feminina.
Founded in 1996, the Méliès d’Or Award is a unique competition, the only one collaboratively organised by several festivals in Europe. With this competition, the Federation aims to highlight the quality and originality of European cinema and incite the renewal of genre cinema across the continent. In 2019, the Federation distinguished “In Fabric”, by Peter Strickland, and “Wild”, by Jan Verdijk, at Sitges International Film Festival. The first highlight from the MOTELX 2020 selection is a first Italian participation with “Darkness”, by director Emanuela Rossi. Once one of the most emblematic countries of euro-horror - the homeland of iconic names like Argento, Fulci, or Bava -, it had almost disappeared from the map of fantastic European cinema. On the opposite side of the field is Germany, a regular presence in the competition, that this year gives us “Pelican Blood”, a film made by Katrin Gebbe that portrays the struggle of a woman in the adoption of a diabolical child. The French “Hunted”, a surprising first work by Vincent Paronnaud - who co-directed “Persepolis” with Marjane Satrapi -, in which a woman is chased by two men in the forest; however, this classic narrative of exploitation cinema from the 1970s is deconstructed throughout the film. The British “Amulet” is a supernatural “rape and revenge” written and directed by well-known actor Romola Garai. On a final note, Russia is back after “Why Don’t You Just Die!” won last year, suggesting an increasingly noteworthy production of horror from this country. “Sputnik” is a horror/sci-fi hybrid set in Cold War USSR, where extra-terrestrial threats coexist with corporate paranoia, much like in “Alien”. Another debut in the competition is “Stranger”, the first Ukrainian film shown at MOTELX and is an exercise in Lynchian visual surrealism, in which a detective investigates the disappearance of a female synchronized swimming team.

Este ano a secção “Serviço de Quarto” apresenta filmes dos cinco continentes. E, começando a viagem pela programação no velho continente, o primeiro destaque vai para “Saint Maud”, o novo título forte da A24 - a casa-mãe de Ari Aster e Robert Eggers, por exemplo - e a primeira realização da britânica Rose Glass, que questiona os mistérios da fé humana. De Inglaterra temos também o único filme desenvolvido durante a quarentena, “Host” é um exercício todo construído a partir de interacções na plataforma Zoom. A co-produção austríaca/germânica “The Trouble with Being Born” chocou o último festival de Berlim, onde esteve em competição, com a sua representação polémica da relação entre um pai e a sua filha artificial. De França, vem um tradicional filme de lobisomens ancorado no quotidiano de uma vila rural francesa em “Teddy”. Espanha abre o Festival com um filme de assombração urbana, “Malasaña 32”, baseada em eventos reais ocorridos no meados dos anos 70. Da Europa para a América, começamos pelo filme de encerramento “The Rental”, estreia na realização do actor Dave Franco, que aborda os riscos inerentes ao fenómeno do Alojamento Local. “Scare Me” propõe um regresso à magia do terror oral através do confronto entre dois argumentistas. Já “Butt Boy” é o OVNI de 2020 pela sua tentativa de tratar dramaticamente um tema escatológico. Da América Latina, dois títulos originais emergem da Argentina: “The Intruder” é um neo-giallo feminista e “History of the Occult” consegue fundir conspirações políticas com cultos satânicos numa estética retro-televisiva. Estratégia semelhante adopta Jayro Bustamante usando o mito da “Llorona” como prisma para a história política recente da Guatemala. Finalmente, do Brasil chega o thriller criminal “Macabro” baseado no caso verídico dos “irmãos necrófilos”, responsáveis por crimes horrendos numa aldeia no estado do Rio de Janeiro na década de 90. Da Ásia, os destaques são o regresso do indonésio Joko Anwar com o diabólico épico “Impetigore”, co-produzido com a Coreia do Sul, e a estreia mundial de “Beast in Love”, o último de Koji Shiraishi, realizador de “Sadako vs. Kayako” (MOTELX 2016). Por fim, uma menção especial para o psicadélico “Fried Barry”, que cimenta a presença da África do Sul na programação.
This year the Room Service section presents films from five continents and beginning the journey through programming in the old continent, the first highlight goes to the newest release from A24, Ari Aster and Robert Eggers’ home, and British Rose Glass’ directorial debut - “Saint Maud”, a film that questions the mysteries of human faith. From England, we also have the only film developed during the quarantine, “Host” is an exercise built entirely from interactions on Zoom. The Austrian / German co-production “The Trouble with Being Born” shocked the last Berlin festival, where it was in competition, with its controversial representation of the relationship between a father and his artificial daughter. From France comes a traditional film of werewolves anchored in the daily life of a French rural village in “Teddy”. From Europe to America, we start with the closing film “The Rental”, which is the directorial debut of actor Dave Franco, who addresses the risks inherent in the Airbnb phenomenon. “Scare Me” proposes a return to the magic of oral horror through the confrontation between two scriptwriters, while “Butt Boy” is the UFO of 2020 for its attempt to dramatically address an eschatological theme. From Latin America, two original titles emerge from Argentina: “The Intruder” is a feminist neo- giallo and “History of the Occult” manages to fuse political conspiracies with satanic cults in a retro- television aesthetic. A similar strategy adopts Guatemalan Jayro Bustamante through the “Llorona” myth told through the prism of Guatemala’s recent political history. Finally, from Brazil comes the criminal thriller “Macabro” based on the true case of the “necrophilic brothers”, responsible for horrendous crimes in a village in the state of Rio de Janeiro in the 90s. A secção Doc Terror é composta, este ano, por propostas bastante diversas em temáticas e aproximações. Entre documentos biográficos, análises exaustivas de filmes de terror seminais ou o acompanhamento da redenção de um actor injustiçado, há um pouco de tudo para ver em 2020. Em primeiro lugar, há que destacar mais uma presença do realizador suíço Alexandre O. Philippe, que, depois dos zombies (“Doc of the Dead”), de “Psycho” (“78/52”) e de “Alien” (“Memory: The Origins of Alien”), se debruça sobre o maior clássico do cinema de terror, “The Exorcist”. Estreado em Veneza no ano passado, “Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist” é, na sua essência, uma masterclass do cineasta norte-americano e o documentário definitivo em torno deste filme, que é dissecado ao longo de 100 minutos fascinantes. “Ivan, o TerrirVel” é um documentário em torno do mestre do terrir Ivan Cardoso. Com imagens da sua visita ao MOTELX em 2007, o filme retrata o artista nas suas mais variadas perspectivas, desde a colaboração com outros cineastas, artistas plásticos e músicos, até aos filmes onde mistura a chanchada brasileira com o cinema de terror clássico norte-americano, bem como o seu trabalho fotográfico e pictórico, tendências que atestam a sua capacidade de síntese artística. Surge então aqui uma hipótese para revisitar a carreira de um dos primeiros convidados de honra do Festival, no já longínquo ano de 2007. Finalmente, a proposta mais surpreendente. “Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street” relata o calvário suportado pelo actor Mark Patton - considerado hoje em dia a primeira “scream queen” masculina - quando foi protagonista da sequela de “A Nightmare on Elm Street”. O subtexto homoerótico, que tornou o filme um marco do cinema LGBT, e muito celebrado actualmente pela comunidade, foi funesto para a carreira deste actor, pois estreou no auge do flagelo da SIDA, numa época em que actores homossexuais disfarçavam as suas preferências sexuais para poderem trabalhar em Hollywood. Este filme não só incide sobre esse contexto social como permite um acertar de contas entre Patton e o argumentista do filme, David Chaskin, que o primeiro sempre culpou pela suspensão da sua carreira de actor.

Among biographical documents, exhaustive analyses of seminal horror films, and following the redemption of a wronged actor, there’s a little bit of everything to see in 2020. First of all, we must highlight the return of the Swiss director Alexandre O. Philippe, who, after zombies (“Doc of the Dead”), “Psycho” (“78/52”), and “Alien” (“Memory: The Origins of Alien”), now focuses on the greatest horror film classic “The Exorcist”. Premiered in Venice last year, “Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist” is, in essence, a masterclass by the American filmmaker and the definitive documentary about this film, that is dissected over the course of 100 fascinating minutes. “Ivan, the TerrirBle” is a documentary about the master of terrir Ivan Cardoso. With images from his MOTELX visit in 2007, the film portrays the artist in his most varied perspectives, from his collaboration with other filmmakers, visual artists, and musicians to the films where he mixes Brazilian chanchada with classic North American horror cinema, including his photographic and pictorial work, all of which are a testament to his capacity for artistic synthesis. Por vezes há filmes que estreiam no momento perfeito. “Get Out”, de Jordan Peele, chegou às salas exactamente no mês da passagem de testemunho de Barack Obama para Donald Trump, o presidente que iria comprovar a teoria central do filme: a falácia da era pós-racial. Este tipo de presciência cinematográfica já tinha acontecido antes, num dos filmes seminais do terror moderno, “Night of the Living Dead”, lançado no ano quente de 1968. A obra-prima de George A. Romero tinha, pela primeira vez na história do cinema de terror norte-americano, um protagonista negro, embora tenha sido inicialmente escrita com um actor branco em mente. Esta simples mudança permitia que o final em que Ben é “confundido” com os mortos-vivos e morto por uma milícia branca evocasse o assassinato de Martin Luther King Jr., ocorrido pouco depois do fim das filmagens. O desenlace de “Night of the Living Dead” era particularmente desesperante, e não fazia mais do que testemunhar a condição da comunidade negra nos EUA daquela época. Jordan Peele, tendo isso em mente, optou por um final “ficcional” para o seu “Get Out”, isto é, o protagonista salva-se sem ser morto ou preso. Neste caso, a ficção permitiu corrigir o real, na esperança de que essas duas categorias se pudessem inverter neste lado do espelho. Infelizmente, no mundo real, não houve ficção que salvasse George Floyd (e muitos outros); o vídeo da sua detenção - ou melhor, do seu homicídio - é o mais terrível dos filmes de terror. Este ciclo pretende, através do género, tal como fez Peele, mostrar um filme diferente daquele que estamos habituados a ver. Trata-se de uma selecção de sete filmes de terror cujo tema principal é o racismo nos EUA, e, ao contrário do que se poderia supor, neste género é possível acordar deste “pesadelo americano”. Do idealismo de “The Intruder” à análise crítica de “Ganja & Hess” e “White Dog”; da catarse de “The People Under the Stairs” e “Tales from the Hood” ao épico “Candyman” - todos eles são percursores cinematográficos do movimento “Black Lives Matter” -, terminando no mais recente e pragmático “Get Out”.
Sometimes there are films that are released at the perfect time. Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” hit theatres the same month Donald Trump’s inauguration as President of the United States took place, the president who would corroborate the film’s key theory: the fallacy of the post-racial era. This kind of cinematic prescience has happened before, particularly with one of modern horror’s seminal films, “Night of the Living Dead”, released in the hot year of 1968. George A. Romero’s masterpiece had, for the first time in the history of North American cinema, a black protagonist, even though the part was initially written with a white actor in mind. This simple change allowed for the ending in which Ben is “mistaken” for the undead and killed by a white myriad to evoke the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., which occurred shortly after filming ended. The outcome of “Night of the Living Dead” was particularly desperate, and did nothing more than testify to the condition of the black community in the USA at that time. With that in mind, Jordan Peele opted for a “fictional” ending to his “Get Out”, that is, one where the protagonist saves himself, without being killed or imprisoned. In this case, fiction was used to correct reality, in the hopes that these two possibilities could be inverted on this side of the mirror. Unfortunately, in the real world, no amount of fiction was enough to save George Floyd (and many others); the video of his arrest - or rather of his murder - is the most horrible horror film of all. This cycle aims, through genre, as did Peele, to show a different narrative from the one we are used to seeing. With a selection of seven horror films, with the main theme of racism in the USA, the genre will prove that, contrary to what might be expected, it is possible to wake up from this “American nightmare”. From the idealism of “The Intruder” to the critical analysis of “Ganja & Hess” and “White Dog”; from the catharsis of “The People Under the Stairs” and “Tales from the Hood” to the epic “Candyman”, and ending in the pragmatic “Get Out”, which are all cinematic predecessors of the “Black Lives Matter” movement.

O advento de uma pandemia que, ao contrário de outras mais recentes, se espalhou literalmente por todo o Mundo, deixou a população mundial com a sensação de estar dentro de um filme de terror. As imagens de cidades desertas e de aglomerados de pessoas com máscaras trouxeram à memória sequências de filmes como “28 Days Later”, “Outbreak”, ou o mais óbvio “Contagion”. Nesse sentido, resolvemos recuperar um filme que fala precisamente dessa sensação. Trata-se de um dos primeiros filmes de Lars von Trier, “Epidemic”, uma meta-narrativa em que uma dupla de argumentistas (interpretados pelos próprios Trier e Niels Vørsel) se debate com a escrita de um argumento de um filme de terror acerca de uma epidemia, enquanto outra real ocorre em simultâneo. As incursões do dinamarquês pelo género sempre foram pouco ortodoxas, como o comprovam a série de TV “The Kingdom” e a longa “Antichrist”, por isso, o estilo falso documentário de “Epidemic”, que vemos nos dias de hoje, quase forma um guia de sobrevivência para lidar com situações extremas de forma criativa. Na senda dos filmes perdidos, chega, provindo dos anos 1980, “Grizzly II: Revenge”. A história começa com a chegada da produtora húngara Suzanne Nagy a Nova Iorque para atrair produções cinematográficas para a Hungria. O primeiro filme a desfrutar desta co-produção foi a sequela de “Grizzly”, lançado em 1976. O argumento era semelhante ao de “Jaws”, só que, em vez de um tubarão, havia um urso; e, em vez da época balnear, ia haver um festival de rock. O co-produtor americano tratou do elenco, que incluía Louise Fletcher e John Rhys-Davies, e arranjou um palco pertencente aos The Rolling Stones. Nagy tratou de fazer com que as florestas húngaras se parecessem com o parque de Yellowstone. Só que, no início das rodagens, o co-produtor desapareceu com os fundos do filme e este teve de ser interrompido, nunca tendo sido acabado. Só em 2018 é que Nagy conseguiu adquirir a totalidade dos direitos, e sentiu que devia remontar o material existente com novas imagens que colassem os planos e relançar o filme como curiosidade cinéfila. E um dos factores decisivos para esse desejo é o elenco, principalmente os papéis secundários, onde encontramos actores hoje consagrados (mas na altura em início de carreira) como George Clooney, Laura Dern, Charlie Sheen ou Timothy Spall.
The advent of a pandemic that, unlike other recent ones, literally spread worldwide, left the world population feeling like they were in a real-life horror movie. The images of deserted cities and groups of people wearing masks brought to mind scenes from films such as “28 Days Later”, “Outbreak”, or the most obvious one, “Contagion”. Therefore, we decided to recover a film that speaks precisely about this feeling. It’s one of Lars von Trier’s first films, “Epidemic”, a meta- narrative in which a pair of scriptwriters (played by Trier and Niels Vørsel themselves) struggle with writing a horror film about an epidemic, while one develops around them in the real world. The Danish director’s incursions into the genre have always been unorthodox, as evidenced by the TV series “The Kingdom” or the film “Antichrist”, making the false documentary style of “Epidemic”, when watched today, seem almost like a survival guide to deal with extreme situations in a creative way. In that same path of lost films comes “Grizzly II: Revenge”, straight from the 80’s. The story begins with the arrival of Hungarian producer Suzanne Nagy in New York to attract film productions to Hungary. The first film to enjoy this co-production was the sequel to “Grizzly”, released in 1976. The script was similar to “Jaws”, except that, instead of a shark, there was a bear; and instead of open beaches for summer vacation, a rock festival was going to take place. The American co-producer took care of the cast, that included Louise Fletcher and John Rhys-Davies, and arranged a stage that belonged to The Rolling Stones, while Nagy tried to make the Hungarian forests look like the Yellowstone Park. But, at the beginning of the shooting, the co-producer disappeared with all the funds, and production had to be interrupted and was subsequently never finished. Only in 2018, Nagy managed to acquire all the rights, and felt she should reassemble the existing material with new images that would tie the shots together and relaunch the film as a cinematic curiosity. The decisive factor for this desire was the original cast, mainly the supporting roles, which included now-renowned actors (but at the time in the beginning of their careers) like George Clooney, Laura Dern, Charlie Sheen, or Timothy Spall.

Em 2005, o CTLX - Cineclube de Terror de Lisboa organizou, em parceria com a Cinemateca, um ciclo chamado “Zombies - Os Mortos-Vivos”. Para incluir cinema português nesta mostra, optámos por programar “Ossos”, de Pedro Costa. Numa nota entregue à imprensa, justificámos esta escolha do seguinte modo: «A relação entre o cinema de Pedro Costa e os zombies provém já de “Casa de Lava”, cuja inspiração provém em grande parte da obra de Jacques Tourneur “I Walked with a Zombie”. As personagens que lhe interessam são geralmente desadaptadas, seres à deriva no espaço, sem rumo, um pouco à semelhança dos zombies de Romero. A diferença reside nas narrativas que não partem da ficção, mas da realidade em si mesma, sem artefactos, que vão evocando aos poucos no espectador referências ao universo fantástico». Jacques Tourneur foi o realizador de um dos filmes mais importantes da história do género, “Cat People”. Por razões económicas, resolveu nunca mostrar “a felina”, optando por sugerir a sua presença nas sombras. O seu cinema foi percursor do terror moderno e também do film noir, dois géneros em que o contraste do preto-e-branco funciona como catalisador de paixões, desejos e estados de alma. Estas referências visuais atravessam todos os filmes de Pedro Costa, desde “O Sangue” até a “Vitalina Varela”, vencedor do último festival de Locarno. Mas Tourneur não é a única marca de cinema de terror clássico na obra de Costa. Outras se manifestam, como o único filme do actor Charles Laughton, “The Night of the Hunter”; o expressionismo alemão, principalmente Murnau e Lang; ou “Les Yeux Sans Visage”, de Georges Franju, cuja actriz Édith Scob faz também parte do elenco de “Casa de Lava”. Actualmente, há poucos cineastas no Mundo capazes de filmar as trevas de forma tão expressiva e misteriosa como Costa, e, por isso, 15 anos depois, voltamos ao cinema dele num programa que inclui duas sessões - “Ne Change Rien” e “Cavalo Dinheiro” - e uma conversa sobre estas influências com um dos cineastas mais importantes do cinema mundial.
In 2005, CTLX organised, in partnership with the Portuguese Cinematheque, a cycle titled “Zombies - The Living Dead”. In order to have Portuguese cinema in this showcase, the film “Ossos”, by Pedro Costa, was included in the programme. In a note given to the press, the choice was justified as follows: «The relationship between Pedro Costa’s cinema and zombies dates back to “Casa de Lava”, being that the film’s inspiration came largely from Jacques Tourneur’s “I Walked with a Zombie”. The characters that interest him are generally misfits, beings aimlessly adrift in space, similarly to Romero’s zombies. The difference lies in the narratives that do not stem from fiction, but from reality itself, with no artefacts, and gradually embed in the viewer references to the fantastic universe». Jacques Tourneur was the director behind one of the most important films in the history of genre cinema, “Cat People”. For financial reasons, he decided to never show “the feline”, choosing to suggest her presence in the shadows. His cinema was a precursor of modern horror and film noir, two genres in which the contrast of black and white works as a catalyst for passions, desires, and states of mind. These visual references run through all of Pedro Costa’s cinematography, from “O Sangue” to “Vitalina Varela”, winner of the past Locarno Film Festival. But Tourneur is not the only influence of classic horror cinema in Costa’s work. Other inspirations manifest themselves, such as the only film by actor Charles Laughton, “The Night of the Hunter”; German expressionism, mainly Murnau and Lang; or “Les Yeux Sans Visage”, by Georges Franju, with actor Édith Scob being also part of the cast of “Casa de Lava”. Currently, there are few filmmakers in the world capable of filming the darkness as expressively and mysteriously as Costa, and so, 15 years later, we return to his cinematography in a programme that includes two screenings - “Change Nothing” and “Horse Money” - and a talk about these influences with one of the most important filmmakers in the world.

Sempre focado no incentivo à produção, promoção e exibição de cinema de terror nacional, o MOTELX apresenta doze curtas-metragens a concurso, um número considerável tendo em conta os acontecimentos da primeira metade de 2020. A selecção deste ano mistura estreias de novos talentos com regressos. São os casos de Francisco Lacerda, que, com “Karaoke Night”, consolida o seu estatuto de único realizador trash dos Açores, Hugo Pinto, com um texto lovecraftiano interpretado por Cláudia Semedo em “O Intruso”, ou Gustavo Silva, com o espectral “Petrichor”. As restantes propostas completam a variedade destes doze candidatos. O terror bucólico de “Carnaval Sujo”, “Mata” e “O Silêncio” contrasta com os ambientes distópicos e paranóicos de “Loop” ou “Mirror Room”. Com temáticas mais quotidianas, evoca-se o passado colonial em “Porque Odeias o Teu Irmão?” e a solidão mórbida da velhice em “Com Sono, Mas Não Durmo”. De temáticas mais alternativas e radicais são exemplos o samba vs. metal de “Death on Tape” e o grafismo cru e despojado de “A Grande Paródia”. Em ano de pandemia, a organização do MOTELX mantém aquele que é o maior prémio atribuído a curtas- metragens em Portugal: 5.000€, com direito a um fim-de-semana de inspiração nos hotéis Belver e nomeação para a competição Méliès d’Or, organizada pela Méliès International Festivals Federation.
Always focused on encouraging the production, promotion, and exhibition of Portuguese horror films, MOTELX presents twelve short films in competition, a considerable number given the events of the first half of 2020. This year’s selection mixes premieres of new talents with the return of a couple of the Festival’s alumni. Like Francisco Lacerda, who consolidates his status as the only Azorean trash director with “Karaoke Night”, Hugo Pinto, with a Lovecraftian text interpreted by Cláudia Semedo in “The Intruder”, or Gustavo Silva, with the spectral “Petrichor”. The other proposals speak to the variety of these twelve candidates. The bucolic horror of “Dirty Carnival”, “Mata”, and “The Silence” contrasts with the dystopian and paranoid environments of “Loop” or “Mirror Room”. Regarding more everyday themes, “Why Do You Hate Your Brother?” evokes the colonial past, and “Her Oldest House” the morbid loneliness of old age. More alternative and radical themes are the samba vs. metal from “Death on Tape” and the raw and stripped graphics from “The Great Parody”. In a year plagued by a pandemic, the MOTELX organisation is still able to award the biggest prize attributed to short films in Portugal: €5,000, coupled with an inspirational weekend at the Belver Hotels and a nomination to the Méliès d’Or competition, organised by the Méliès International Festivals Federation.

Trabalhou na UniPortugal, Animatógrafo e Filmes de Fundo antes de fundar a Ukbar Filmes a meias com o argentino Pablo Iraola. É membro do European Producers Club e da European Film Academy, e antiga Presidente da APCA. Do seu trabalho como produtora destacam-se os filmes “Kiss Me”, do pai António Cunha Telles, “Como Desenhar um Círculo Perfeito”, de Marco Martins, “Florbela”, de Vicente Alves do Ó, “A Corte do Norte”, de João Botelho, e “O Soldado Milhões”, de Gonçalo Galvão Teles e Jorge Paixão da Costa. Daughter of Portuguese producer António da Cunha Telles, who launched the Cinema Novo movement, she graduated in Political Science and International Relations, but opted to work in film and television production. She worked at UniPortugal, Animatógrafo, and Filmes de Fundo before founding Ukbar Filmes with Argentinian Pablo Iraola. She’s a member of the European Producers Club and of the European Film Academy, and former President of the APCA. João Pedro Rodrigues Começou por estudar Biologia, para ser ornitólogo, mas desistiu para estudar Cinema na ESTC, tendo terminado o curso em 1992. A sua carreira internacional começou com a curta-metragem “Parabéns!”, que conquistou o Leão de Prata em Veneza. Escreveu e realizou cinco longas-metragens, desde “O Fantasma”, estreada também em Veneza - e que causou polémica em Itália quando o jornal oficial do Vaticano pediu a demissão do director do festival por ter programado o filme -, até à sua mais recente obra, “O Ornitólogo”, que lhe valeu o Leopardo de Prata de Melhor Realizador no 69.º Festival Internacional de Cinema de Locarno, em 2016. He started studying Biology to become an ornithologist, but dropped out to study Cinema at the ESTC instead, graduating in 1992. His international career began with the short film “Congratulations!”, which won the Silver Lion in Venice. He wrote and directed five feature films, his first work being “The Phantom” - that also premiered in Venice and caused controversy in Italy when the official Vatican newspaper asked for the festival director’s resignation for having programmed the film - and his most recent one “The Ornithologist”, which won him the Silver Leopard for Best Director at the 69th Locarno International Film Festival, in 2016.

Este ano, a selecção de Curtas Internacionais do MOTELX leva-nos a viajar do futuro para o passado. Na curta de terror sci-fi russa “2050”, encontramos um homem que está cansado da tecnologia invasiva da vida quotidiana. O suíço “Hand in Hand” lança um olhar satírico sobre a política contemporânea para mostrar que líderes agressivamente masculinos não são o que precisamos agora, e o maravilhoso filme de época “Chimes of Love and Death” transporta-nos para uma igreja galega no passado, onde os mortos não ficam nos seus túmulos. Podemos ver ainda nesta secção o regresso de Santiago Menghini, depois da exibição de “Milk” em 2018, agora com duas novas curtas-metragens: o tenso e incrivelmente cinematográfico “Red Wine”, que conta a história de uma tentativa de envenenamento que corre terrivelmente mal, e “Regret”, que segue um homem a fugir literalmente dos seus demónios pessoais numa noite fria. Também de regresso, após o sucesso da curta “Piggy” na edição passada, Carlota Pereda pede que questionemos as histórias que contamos para confortar as nossas crianças no perturbador “There Will Be Monsters”. This year’s MOTELX International Short Film selection takes us on a journey from the future to the past, beginning with the Russian sci-fi horror “2050”, where we meet a man who’s getting sick of the invasive technology of daily life. The Swiss film “Hand in Hand” casts a satirical eye on contemporary politics, suggesting that aggressively masculine leaders aren’t what we need right now, and the gorgeous period horror “Chimes of Love and Death” transports us back in time to a Galician church where the dead won’t stay in their graves. Also in the selection, MOTELX favourite Santiago Menghini returns after “Milk” (MOTELX 2018) with two new shorts: the tense and incredibly cinematic “Red Wine”, that tells the story of an attempted poisoning gone horribly wrong, and “Regret”, that follows a man literally running away from his personal demons on a cold night. Also returning this year after the success of her short “Piggy” at MOTELX 2019, Carlota Pereda makes us question the stories we tell to comfort our children in the disturbing “There Will Be Monsters”. Este ano, e pela primeira vez, o MOTELX propõe um diálogo entre as maravilhas caóticas do cinema experimental e o universo do cinema de terror, ambos reflexos da contracultura. Desafios estilísticos e abordagens alternativas são elementos comuns às duas linguagens, e através da exibição de novas curtas-metragens, apresentamos as experiências que (re)constroem a identidade visual dos filmes de terror de hoje e do amanhã. Embora abandonem a narrativa tradicional e o conceito de causalidade, desconstruindo o vocabulário visual e eliminando qualquer familiaridade, os filmes experimentais têm a capacidade de criar pesadelos transcendentais usando técnicas revolucionárias. Tal como o monstro de Frankenstein, o corpo deformado do cinema é auscultado até às suas entranhas, desafiando todas as convenções lógicas. Estas experiências hipnóticas são tal e qual feitiços que desorientam o espectador, rituais alucinatórios que utilizam o cinema como ferramenta de divinação e que invocam a sua raiz demoníaca. Iremos explorar a origem destas visões assustadoras e, através delas, procurar pôr novas perspectivas no cinema de terror. Preparem-se para um caleidoscópio cinematográfico de poesia macabra, névoas assombradas, imagens ocultas e puzzles cromáticos. A mostra de curtas-metragens de terror Experimental será apresentada em duas exibições distintas com partes idênticas, de cerca de 60 minutos cada.

Stylistic challenges and alternative approaches are found in both, and with a new short films showcase we bring forward the experiments that (re)built today and tomorrow’s horror films’ visual identity. Body horror and fantasy, minds in ecstasy, transcendence and hallucinations; an unconventional lineup of films able to create trance-like nightmares with never-before-seen techniques. Like Frankenstein’s monster, the frighteningly deformed physique of cinema is auscultated down to its celluloid bowels and guts, defying all logical conventions. While abandoning traditional narratives and the concept of causality, deconstructing the visual vocabulary and removing all familiarities, these hypnotic experiences are nothing short of disorienting spells to the audience, hallucinatory rituals, utilizing cinema as a tool of divination and invoking its primitive demonic roots. We will be exploring the sources of these frightful visions and searching through them for new perspectives in movie terror. Prepare for a short film kaleidoscope of macabre poetry, haunted blurs, occult images, and chromatic puzzles, from the works of experimental innovators. The Experimental horror short films showcase will be presented in two separate screenings of around 60 minutes each.

Em 2020, o MOTELX decidiu, no período de quarentena, lançar novamente o microCURTAS, para ver até onde ia a originalidade de criar um filme de terror dentro de quatro paredes. A ideia estendeu-se para além desse período, e o resultado foi surpreendente. Histórias aterradoras que acontecem não só em casa, como também na praia, no cemitério e até noutra galáxia. Tudo isto em dois minutos, e filmadas com telemóveis,tablets ou smartphones. Esta competição tem como objectivo promover o cinema de terror nacional através da utilização das novas tecnologias na produção cinematográfica, uma tendência cada vez mais presente na criatividade da Sétima Arte. Existem 31 microCURTAS em competição, e os que conseguirem obter um mínimo de 20 likes serão avaliados perante um júri. A curta-metragem vencedora será exibida na Sessão de Encerramento da 14.ª edição do MOTELX - Festival Internacional de Cinema de Terror de Lisboa.
In 2020, MOTELX decided to revive the microSHORTS award during quarantine, to see how far the creativity behind the making of a horror film could go within four walls. The idea was extended well beyond that self-isolation period, and the results were beyond surprising. Terrifying stories that happen not only at home, but also at the beach, in the cemetery, and even in another galaxy. All of this in two minutes, and shot entirely with mobile phones, tablets, or smartphones. This competition aims to promote national horror cinema through the use of new technologies in film production, a trend increasingly present in the Seventh Art’s imaginary. There are 31 microSHORTS in competition, and those who manage to obtain a minimum of 20 likes will sit before a jury. The winning microSHORT will then be shown at the Closing Ceremony of MOTELX - Lisbon International Horror Film Festival’s 14th edition.

Com uma programação dedicada aos espectadores mais novos, o Lobo Mau tem vindo a trabalhar a relação do universo infantil com o universo do terror. Ao longo dos anos, a secção tem tido um papel fulcral na formação cultural das crianças e jovens através de experiências educativas que estimulam a aproximação e promovem a importância das artes no seu desenvolvimento social. Esta secção tem acolhido durante o Festival dezenas de crianças por dia, com uma programação diversificada e surpreendente que tem vindo a propor ao público mais jovem ateliês de desenho e pintura, projecções de figuras místicas, e até uma sessão dobrada ao vivo do filme “The Peanut Butter Solution” pelos alunos da Academia Nicolau Breyner, entre outras actividades lúdicas e educativas. Este ano, a programação será constituída pela exibição de filmes em que o terror estará presente de uma forma lúdica e divertida.
With a programme dedicated to a younger audience, Big Bad Wolf has been working on the relationship between a child’s world and the horror universe. Over the years, the section has played a pivotal role in the cultural formation of children and young people through educational experiences that stimulate proximity and promote the importance of the arts in their social development. This section has greeted dozens of children a day during the Festival, with a diverse and surprising programme that has offered in the past drawing and painting workshops, projections of mystical figures, and even a live dubbed screening of “The Peanut Butter Solution” by students of the Academia Nicolau Breyner, among other recreational and educational activities. This year, the programme will consist of film screenings in which horror will appear in a fun and playful manner.

Uma equipa unida, maioritariamente portuguesa, recuperou um realizador que não filmava há mais de vinte anos das montanhas do Sul de França e, com alma e coração, fê-lo renascer e voltar à ribalta. Como chega um filme destes a Portugal? Porquê Portugal? Quais foram os factores decisivos? Quais os grandes desafios de uma produção que envolve equipas multinacionais? Como foi trabalhar com uma estrela como Nicolas Cage? Este filme tem a particularidade de ter muitos efeitos especiais, construção de “monstros” e, ao mesmo tempo, uma grande componente de VFX. Portugal was, for months, the upstate of New York. A united, mainly Portuguese team met a director from the mountains of southern France, and, with all their heart and soul, revived a filmmaker who hadn’t released anything for over twenty years. How does a film like this arrive in Portugal? Why Portugal? What were the decisive factors? What were the major challenges in a production involving multinational teams? What was it like working with a star like Nicolas Cage? This film has the particularity of having many special effects, construction of “monsters”, and, at the same time, a high VFX component. Not to mention children, dogs, and alpacas - a real puzzle when it comes to shooting a film. It was a mix of art and entertainment that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) with a sold out screening full of spectators in a state of delirium, which felt more like a football championship final. The completion of this film by BRO Cinema was an adventure that, now that it’s over, has left its participants longing for more.

O termo “zombie”, por exemplo, é habitualmente usado (principalmente no estrangeiro) em análises e críticas aos seus filmes, mas referindo-se sempre mais a Jacques Tourneur do que a George A. Romero, o que faz sentido, até porque “Casa de Lava” começou por ser uma tentativa de um remake de “I Walked with a Zombie”, realizado por Tourneur em 1943. As “sombras” de Tourneur - um dos pais do terror moderno - são uma presença constante, mas misturam-se outras referências do cinema de terror. Since its beginnings with “Blood”, Pedro Costa’s work has had many aesthetic and thematic affiliations with classic horror cinema. The term “zombie”, for example, is generally used (mainly abroad) in analyses and reviews of his films, but always referring more to Jacques Tourneur than to George A. Romero, which makes sense, because “Casa de Lava” started as an attempt at a remake of Tourneur’s “I Walked with a Zombie”, from 1943. The “shadows” of Tourneur - one of the fathers of modern horror - are a constant presence, but other references of horror cinema are also in the mix. This conversation will mainly focus on these influences, and on the “filming the darkness” technique that makes Pedro Costa one of the great contemporary filmmakers.
