    Oct 01, 2015 16:00 GMT Svenskt Tenn introduces five vases by Josef Frank Five new clear glass vases designed by Josef Frank are now available at Svenskt Tenn. The vases are shown in the exhibition “100 vases with flowers”, which opens October 1 at Svenskt Tenn in Stockholm. The exhibition is a tribute to Svenskt Tenn’s founder Estrid Ericson’s autumn exhibition from 1940. Svenskt Tenn’s founder Estrid Ericson had an urge to bring inside elements of nature for use in furnishings and table settings. Every week she brought flowers and twigs from her summer house garden on Tyresö outside Stockholm to decorate the store at Strandvägen 5. “Estrid Ericson was often referred to as the Queen of Table Settings because of herability to mix simple things with the lavishly festive,” says Thommy Bindefeld, Marketing Director at Svenskt Tenn. “She combined various styles and brought together different materials, colors and shapes. We want this exhibition to inspire visitors to create beautiful flower compositions and table settings in the spirit of Estrid Ericson.” In the exhibition, five new clear glass vases from the archive are shown. The vases, designed by Josef Frank in 1957, are now for the first time being produced at Skrufs glassworksin Småland, Sweden. Svenskt Tenn also introduces a collection of lights, exclusively sold in Sweden through Svenskt Tenn, designed by the Italian-British duo Giopato & Coombes and by Kalmar Werkstätten of Austria. “Giopato & Coombes is a prominent design duo working with traditional Italian artisans and high quality materials,” says Thommy Bindefeld. “Kalmar Werkstätten is a classic lightingmanufacturer, suppliers to Josef Frank’s own company Haus & Garten during the 1930s.

    Jun 10, 2014 09:30 GMT To Mexico in Estrid Ericson’s footsteps – new exhibition at Svenskt Tenn Svenskt Tenn’s founder Estrid Ericson travelled to Mexico in 1939. She brought 70 boxes of objects back to create an exhibition in the store in Stockholm. Today a new exhibition opens, showing products purchased during a trip in Estrid Ericson’s footsteps in 2013. ’’The world is a book and he who stays at home reads only one page was one of Estrid Ericson’s favorite quotations, which she had engraved on a pewter matchbox. Travel was one of her main sources of inspiration and she was constantly looking for new items for Svenskt Tenn, preferably things that could not be found elsewhere in Sweden’’, says Thommy Bindefeld, Marketing Director at Svenskt Tenn. Ericson’s purchasing journeys took her to many countries and in the spring of 1939 she traveled with her friend Ragnhild Lundberg to Mexico. She looked up producers and placed orders with them directly. A few months later, boatloads of Mexican objects arrived, filling the store on Strandvägen in Stockholm. The show became one of the most appreciated events in the company’s history that far. Today a new exhibition opens, displaying the handpicked items purchased during a trip to Mexico in Estrid Ericson’s footsteps. All items are for sale. ’’It has been very exciting to follow in Estrid Ericson’s footsteps. We have rediscovered some of the items she selected during her trip, and we have also found many other beautiful crafted products that we simply could not resist,’’ says Thommy Bindefeld.

  • Estrid Ericson Biography
    Estrid Ericson (1884-1981) was a Swedish artist, designer and accomplished entrepreneur responsible for both the establishment and longevity of Svenskt Tenn (Swedish Pewter), a Swedish interior design company for which she served as managing director for 56 years. Together with Nils Fougstedt, Ericson developed Svenskt Tenn into a most influential enterprise involved in manufacturing and design, imports, exports, retail sales and consulting services. Ericson was born in 1894 and raised in Hjo in Vastergotland. In the early 1920s, she trained as a drawing teacher at the Technical School in Stockholm. Thereafter she worked for several years as an art teacher, a pewter artist and interior design consultant at Svenskt Hemslöjd and Willman and Wiklund. In 1924, together with fellow pewter artist Nils Fougstedt, Ericson opened a small pewter workshop, and later in the same year they founded Svenskt Tenn in Stockholm. Initially, Svengst Tenn produced and sold creative modern designs in pewter, which were recognized for their wonderful quality of craftsmanship. In the 1930s, the focus of Svenskt Tenn shifted away from pewter and onto interior design and architect-designed furniture. In 1934, Ericson offered the Austrian architect Josef Frank a position within the firm, which proved to be an important driving collaboration for Svenskt Tenn. Mar 25, 2020 10:51 GMT Svenskt Tenn launches Japanese Magnolia from GP & J Baker Svenskt Tenn has collaborated with fabric company GP & J Baker since the 1930s. Now Svenskt Tenn has an opportunity to revive William Turner’s Japanese Magnolia print from GP & J Baker’s archives. The print was designed in 1917 and has likely not been in production since then. Svenskt Tenn’s founder Estrid Ericson began collaborating with the British fabric company GP & J Baker back in the 1930s. Since then, Svenskt Tenn has had the exclusive rights to sell selected historical GP & J Baker prints. After searching through GP & J Baker’s historical archives, Svenskt Tenn has been granted the exclusive rights to launch the Japanese Magnolia print from 1917. “It was Josef Frank who first introduced Estrid Ericson to the magical world of GP & J Baker. As with Fornasetti, Svenskt Tenn has shared a unique collaboration with GP & J Baker since the 1930s where we still have the exclusive rights to certain colour combinations and prints. When we had the opportunity to explore their archives we found an incredibly beautiful fabric by William Turner – Japanese Magnolia, which we are launching in connection with our spring exhibition,” says Thommy Bindefeld, marketing and creative director at Svenskt Tenn. The exhibition has been named after Turner’s Japanese Magnolia print, which is also the theme of the exhibition. The entire collection is presented in an environment inspired by a patio.

    Aug 22, 2014 08:29 GMT Svenskt Tenn celebrates the furniture designs of Josef Frank in new exhibition The colorful prints on textiles, wallpaper and carpets are for many people what first comes to mind when they hear the name Josef Frank, but above all he was a prominent furniture designer. This part of his life’s achievements is highlighted in the tribute exhibit now on display at Svenskt Tenn. Josef Frank was born in Austria in 1885, and came to Sweden with his Swedish wife Anna in 1933. The threat from the rising Nazi menace was becoming too real, so upon an invitation from Svenskt Tenn founder Estrid Ericson, he chose to leave his native country for good. In Sweden he started his collaboration with Estrid Ericson, that was so mutually fruitful and came to last until Josef Frank passed away in 1967. Svenskt Tenn is now about to launch eight pieces of furniture by Josef Frank (see Appendix), some of which have never been manufactured before. They are displayed in an exhibition composed according to the designer’s interior philosophy – a representative Frank statement is that it does not matter if you mix styles, colors and prints; things that you like will still merge into one harmonious unit. The exhibition is titled A tribute to the furniture designer Josef Frank. The art in the exhibition comes from the art consultancy company Moderna Samlare. The exhibition runs August 23 through September 27 at the Svenskt Tenn store in Stockholm, Sweden. Svenskt Tenn was founded in 1924 by designer and drawing teacher Estrid Ericson (1894-1981).
