It is the second one in our series of travel guides to capitals of the Nordic and Baltic countries which are Nordea’s home markets. This time — introducing Copenhagen. On my first visit to Copenhagen — well before 2007 when our Russian bank became part of Nordea and we started going on frequent business trips to the Nordics — I was amazed by the city’s unique lifestyle. I would call it eco-friendly: people are lively and active, but no one is in a rush, there are many large modern buildings, but the streets are cozy and intimate, and the whole city is simple, straightforward, nice and comfortable. This guide will not only lead you through Copenhagen’s landmarks, museums, parks, restaurants and clubs, but will also let you feel the free spirit and nature of this beautiful city. Denmark has been one of Nordea’s home markets for over two centuries. Sparekassen for Kjøbenhavn og Omegn, opened in 1820, is among the oldest banks Nordea stems from. It boasts of having served Hans Christian Andersen, the first name you think of when you say Denmark, and we are sure that’s a fact, not a legend. Besides Denmark, Nordea, the largest financial services group in Northern Europe, operates in Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Baltics and Russia. 2013 proved to be a difficult year for both global and European economy, its financial and banking sectors. -

HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN’S ROMANTIC IMAGINATION: Exploring eighteenth and nineteenth century romantic conceptualisations of the imagination in selected fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen. ANNETTE GREYVENSTEYN submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS in the subject English Studies at the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA SUPERVISOR: Dr Eileen Donaldson July 2018 Abstract There are certain influences from the eighteenth and nineteenth century English and German romantic Zeitgeist that can be discerned in Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. The role of the imagination stands out as a particularly dominant notion of the romantic period as opposed to the emphasis on reason during the Enlightenment. It is this romantic influence that Andersen’s tales especially exemplify. For him the imagination is transcendent – one can overcome the mystery and hardship of an earthly existence by recasting situations imaginatively and one can even be elevated to a higher, spiritual realm by its power. The transcendent power of the imagination is best understood by viewing it through the lens of negative capability, a concept put forward by romantic poet, John Keats. The concept implies an “imaginative openness” to what is, which allows one to tolerate life’s uncertainties and the inexplicable suffering that forms part of one’s earthly existence by using the imagination to open up new potential within trying circumstances. In selected fairy tales, Andersen’s child protagonists transcend their circumstances by the power of their imagination. In other tales, nature is instrumental in this imaginative transcendence. The natural world conveys spiritual truths and has a moralising influence on the characters, bringing them closer to the Ultimate Creator. -

Children all over the world know The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Pea and other tales. But Andersen also wrote very important works in many other literary genres. As we will discover, Andersen’s writings are not just for children. Further, Andersen very often in his works gives insightful commentary that reflects social, philosophical and technological changes throughout the 19th Century. This course will be a study of 30 fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen as well as extracts from his novels, travelogues, poems, diaries and of his autobiography, The Fairy Tale of My Life. -

THE BROTHERS GRIMM AND HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN Cay Dollerup, Copenhagen, Denmark Abstract In broad terms the genre we usually term ‘fairytales’ first appeared in France, whose culture and language are central to in European history, when Charles Perrault published Les Contes de ma Mère l’Oye (or Contes) in 1697. The genre was invigorated in Germany, notaby by the Kinder- und Hausmärchen (1812) of the brothers Grimm. Both France and Germany were large nations and dominant in European cultural life, but small Denmark also stands out in the history of the Euro- pean fairytales in the 19th century. The reason is that the Dane Hans Christian Andersen wrote Eventyr (1835) that have also become well-known internationally. Andersen never credited the brothers Grimm as a source inspiration about his inspiration for writing fairytales. In this paper I shall discuss the history of the Grimm Tales, the Danish response to them, the way the German Tales were edited, the story of Andersen’s life and the reasons why he never credited the brothers Grimm for inspiring him to write fairytales. His narratives were not the creations of his fertile ima- gination only. But the story behind this, with the brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen as the towering figures, is complex. The brothers Grimm and Napoleonic Europe The brothers Grimm began collecting tales in the kingdom of Westphalia.1 Unlike today’s unified Germany, Napoleonic ‘Germany’ consisted of numerous more or less autonomous fiefs, principalities, and kingdoms. One of these was the landgravedom of Hesse with less than 10,000 square kilometres and half a milli- on inhabitants. -

(Project Code No. JDR 2008B07.) Abstract Hans Christian Anderson is the most renowned fairy tale masters throughout the history. His works have been translated into different languages and spread all over the world. This paper intends to discuss Anderson’s works via a review of newly obtained literature relevant to his works. There is contradiction between Anderson’s actual life and dreams; both the natural revelation of children’s spirit and the profound expression of adults’ thinking contrastively exist in his works; not only the casual style in folk writing but also the poetic creation of literature are simultaneously employed in his works. These three aspects are contradictory but also uniform as well in Anderson. It is just in this contradiction and unity that Andersen’s works can be so splendid and simple, so bright and profound. Based on the above reason, the author points out that Anderson’s success is by no means an accidental phenomenon and his works can not be interpreted in a narrow sense as just fairy tales only for children, they have a profound influence on the adult literature.
