A BRIEF HISTORY and ORIENTATION - to the - FREEMAN KITCHENS COLLECTION Jennifer M. Jameson | WKU Folk Studies | Spring 2011 Freeman Kitchens stands in front of his shop. Photo by Jennifer Jameson, May 2011. ABSTRACT: The Freeman Kitchens Collection is largely a recorded sound collection of the Folklife Archives at the Kentucky Library & Museum, Western Kentucky University. The Collection includes 250, 7-inch reel-to-reel tapes with source material from the personal collection of Mr. Freeman Kitchens of Drake, Kentucky – U.S. postmaster, record collector, owner of Drake Vintage Music & Curios, and founding member and president emeritus of the Carter Family Fan Club. The recordings consists of tapes (or tapes of tapes) of 78 rpm commercial recordings, radio transcriptions, airchecks of radio broadcast programs and performances, field recordings of festival performances, and the like. WKU first acquired these tapes in the mid 1970s, as folklorists Burt Feintuch and Lynwood Montell directed and implemented the acquisition of these sound recordings from Mr. Kitchens. The collection also contains three recorded interviews with Mr. Kitchens from 1974, 1975, and 2010, respectively. In addition, the Archives hold some related ephemera from Mr. Kitchens including letters addressed to him from members of the Carter Family, record collectors, and from folklife scholars; posters from country music events; fan-made discographies; and original copies of the journal of the Carter Family Fan Club, the Sunny Side Sentinel. Freeman Kitchens continues to operate his record shop in Drake. EVERLYPEDIA (formerly The Everly Brothers Index – TEBI) Coordinated by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik A complete (as far as is possible) index/encyclopaedia on every facet of Don & Phil Everly, covering their lives, careers, influences and connections – of course, from us as huge fans, with all due respect to them and their families. For more recording information, see also the various detailed discography lists on the EBI website (Everly.Net); for lyrics to songs, please refer to the Lyric List on the same website (http://www.everly.net/file/disco/disco.htm ). KEY/GLOSSARY/NOTES: • WB: Warner Brothers • EBs: The Everly Brothers • LPs, CDs etc. are generally (but not always) referred to throughout as ‘albums’. • Other than important (re)releases, only the original/initial album release is referred to. • Entries are listed under the first letter, including titles that start with a bracket, e.g. ‘(Why Am I) Chained To A Memory’, but exclude ‘The’ in which case they are listed under the second word. • Surnames or family names come first in the index. • Headings are coloured blue for song and album titles and maroon for everything else. • All words in bold type in the text are cross-references to other main entry headings – although no doubt we’ve missed a few! • Entries are generally aimed to be informative and we have attempted to keep them brief though some are lengthy due to the importance and significance in the life and career of Don and Phil. However, in some cases, due to the limitations of space and the huge volume of material available elsewhere, details have been kept to a bare minimum and relate mainly to the ‘Everly connection’ – e.g.

All Rights Reserved Abstract THE CARTER FAMILY AND HAZEL & ALICE: A COMPARISON OF MUSICAL INFLUENCES AND CHANGING GENDER NORMS (DECEMBER 2016) Laiken Boyd B.A., Glenville State College M.A., Appalachian State University Chairperson: Dave H. Wood This thesis explores, in detail, the lives and musical careers of The Carter Family (A.P., Sara, and Maybelle) in comparison with those of Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard. These are two trailblazing musical groups of the country and bluegrass music industries. This thesis discusses the effect of these women’s accomplishments on the country music and bluegrass industries when taking into consideration the obstacles society presented them with in the form of gender norms. Using the social constructs of gender norms during the 1920s-1970s as a lens for discussing some of the obstacles these women faced in their careers (e.g., restrictions/hindrance). This work will attempt to address what the gender norms of the time period were, if the fact that they were women presented any significant obstacles for their careers, and why these women received the recognition that they did.

It’s a Man’s World: An Analysis of the Roles of Women in the Male-Dominated Country Music Industry by Hayley Payne A thesis presented to the Honors College of Middle Tennessee State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation from the University Honors College Fall 2020 It’s a Man’s World: An Analysis of the Roles of Women in the Male-Dominated Country Music Industry by Hayley Payne APPROVED: ____________________________________ Melissa Wald, Thesis Advisor Professor, Department of Recording Industry ____________________________________ Dr. Philip E. Phillips Associate Dean, University Honors College ABSTRACT This honors thesis addresses the gender bias of the country music industry. Women are severely underrepresented on country radio, leading to more underrepresentation on touring and festival lineups, award show nominations, streaming playlists, and more. Many believe the myth that “women don’t want to hear women.” However, data shows that audiences are eager to hear country music from female voices. Fans have craved country music from female artists since the birth of the genre, as the genre was shaped by iconic female voices and songs. Many female artists have had successes in album sales and tours within recent years, proving that country music fans are supportive of women in the genre. To research for this project, I gathered data from Billboard charts and Mediabase radio airplay charts to exemplify the gap between male and female representation. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS I. • Radio, WSM and the Grand Ole Opry
Radio, WSM and the Grand Ole Opry Essential Questions: Why was WSM created? What factors led to the popularity of the Grand Ole Opry? The history of WSM and the Grand Ole Opry starts in the early days of radio. Nikola Tesla realized that the key to making radio waves work as a form of communication was individualization. In other words, you needed to be able to select the signal you wanted to hear and cancel out the rest. Italian Guglielmo Marconi used Tesla’s ideas to create and market his Wireless Telegraph Company. At first, the U.S. Patent Office rejected Marconi’s patent claims, but later reversed that decision and granted the patents to Marconi in 1904. This set the stage for American corporations to start building and selling radio to the public. In order to boost sales of radios, Westinghouse set up the first commercial radio station, KDKA in 1920. Department stores soon followed suite, setting up their own stations to boost sales of radios. However, everyone who could afford a radio would eventually buy one. The radio stations’ only response to this economic blow was to sell advertising. The first radio advertisement was broadcast on August 28th, 1922. The idea of using radio to advertise other products and services revolutionized the medium and led to the creation of WSM and the Grand Ole Opry. In 1925, the National Life and Accident Insurance Company in Nashville began operating a radio station. Edwin Craig, the executive in charge of the project, believed that station would reach new customers and enhance the company’s image.
