Pattishall Pre-school would like to thank all those who helped to make our dream of an outdoor play area come true - see front cover photograph! Our fundraising began with a grant from Councillor Ben Smith through the Northants County Council Councillors Empowerment Fund; this was generously added to with contributions from Pattishall Parish Council, a charitable business donation from Mark and Kate Mitton’s company PWC and an anonymous donation. We were also very lucky that Johnny Smith of AJ Design and Build put us in touch with his contact at Jewson who donated our paving slabs, and Paul Leeson was able to borrow a digger and other specialist equipment from Whiting Landscapes. Added to that, our families and staff generously donated their time providing free labour. This hard work included digging out earth from the steep slope, levelling the area, installing a retaining wall and laying the paving slabs – we didn’t know we were such a skilled bunch! We would also like to say a special thank you to Iris Illingworth, Chair of Pattishall Parish Hall committee and Duncan Townsend who have both helped and supported us along the way in creating our beautiful garden which is now providing a fun and secure area for the children to play and learn in. Pattishall Pre-School is non profit making and run by a voluntary management committee and the creation of this garden would not have been possible without the generosity of all of those involved. We are very busy at the moment so there are lots of local children benefitting from this space and enjoying the freedom it allows. If you would like more information about us or you would like your child's name to be added to our waiting list, then please contact Lauren Leeson - 01327 831413

2 Around Pattishall July to September 2011 Patient Participation Panel

Much of interest was gained by many of the people who attended the “Drop-in” event on the 10th May ’11. Thank you to those who came and who made the efforts of the agencies represented and the members of the Patient Participation Panel (P.P.P.), worthwhile. The PPP is made up of 10 patient representatives meeting with 2 representatives of Practice to consider ways of improving the service It is essential that the Medical Practice widens it’s involvement with patients of the Practice – other than clinical involvement - to create opportunities for patients to express their views regarding the services provided by the Practice and complete surveys. To this end, a “Reference Group” will be set up. Any patient of the Greens Norton ( and Weedon ) Medical Practice may join the Reference Group, so please feel free to nominate yourself . Pattishall Good Neighbours Club

Time The time rolls on so quickly I find myself amazed that a report for Around Pattishall is again due. I was right in respect of the Singing with Natasha, she did get us all joining in. Our Bring & Buy was another success, again there were more articles than sales but our excellent auctioneers (Rose & Steve) got us to buy nearly all the left over articles. The few remaining were given to charity shops. The only criticism I heard was that there were not enough cakes for sale, perhaps we shall have to plead very nicely to our members to make more in future. Our next outing, June 9th, is to Sandringham so we will keep our fingers crossed for a nice day. We had a very nice visit in May to Joyce’s son’s market garden in Olney. It rained in the morning but cleared up for us to go round and marvel at the variety of plants and trees he had there. Afterwards we enjoyed a cup of tea in Olney before returning home. July we shall be in the Hall again with Victoria Davis “History of Fashion” will be her subject. August 11th will find us journeying to Trentham Gardens , we will keep our fingers crossed again for another fine day. The AGM’s of the above organisations were held and the following officers were re-elected for both associations; Chairman - Iris Illingworth Booking secretary - Suzanne Raper Vice-chair - Jonny Smith Treasurer - Karen Stewart Secretary - Josie Bateman Other committee members are Jo Nicholls, Jane Chapman, Jan Rogers, Jean Waring and Steve Smart. The Afternoon Tea in May was well supported and raised £280. Thank you to all those who made cakes and contributed in making the event a success. The Gardening Club supplied a plant stall with plants donated by their members. Future events Car Boot sale on Sunday 10th July. See the notice for further details. Walking Treasure Hunt on Sunday 25th September. This will be an event for all the family starting at the Parish Hall. Teas and refreshments will be available. See notice boards nearer the date. With the funds raised over the last two years and the support of the Parish Council’s donation of £5000 we are hoping to make some major improvements to the large hall this year. We are still actively applying for grants in order to extend the small hall and provide more storage facilities. Please support us in our events in order to improve the Parish Hall, a vital parish facility.

4 Around Pattishall July to September 2011 Cold Higham Parish Council

Six nominations were received for the recent parish council elections and, as there are seven positions to fill, there was no need for a vote. The six nominees, all previous council members, were therefore elected: Judy Coates, Richard Dickens, Jane Kimble, Maggie Merris, Ken Tomkinson, Keith Wootton. After many years of service on the parish council Ruth Dunkley decided not to put her name forward for the recent election. The parish council would like to thank Ruth for all her hard work and offer its best wishes for the future. This means that there is currently a vacancy to be filled. The parish council is eager to find a willing volunteer, perhaps from part of the parish that is currently under represented. Anyone interested should in the first instance contact parish council clerk Pauline Pearson on 01327 830287 for an informal discussion. It is important that the parish council has a full complement of members and, in the longer term, that elections are held as part of the democratic process. The parish council has received notification that the mobile library service will shortly cease to visit Cold Higham and Grimscote as a result of local government cutbacks. It is a shame that this service will no longer be available to local residents. The issue of dog fouling around the parish and in particular in the churchyard and cemetery has arisen once again. More examples have been found despite numerous notes about this is previous editions of Around Pattishall and posters on the various notice boards and at the entrances to the spaces concerned. Dog fouling in these areas is simply unacceptable. There is no need for dogs to foul there and it causes much distress to residents and especially those with a family member or loved one buried in the cemetery. Sadly if this problem continues the parish council will have no alternative but to ban dogs from the churchyard and cemetery and take even more steps if necessary Keith Wootton

5 Around Pattishall July to September 2011 Climate Friendly Communities Award

On behalf of the Parish Plan Committee we spent time with the children at Pattishall School extolling the virtues of self-sufficiency, saving energy and the environment. As a result the children encouraged their parents to have Allotments. They also took home equipment to monitor electrical usage and realised how much money they could save by switching lights off. We explained the virtues of planting trees and improving the entrance to the village off Fosters Booth Road to improve the environment. All these activities enabled us to register in The Climate Friendly Communities Competition. The results have just been announced at the Home Energy Efficient Partnership (NHEEP) and we achieved the runners-up prize of £500. The prize is to be spent on climate friendly community activities. 12 Around Pattishall July to September 2011 Parish Plan

In a mysterious way the Parish Plan continues to influence and complete issues that members of the community expressed as concerning them or requiring improvement. There were 3 outstanding items upon completion of the Parish Plan, refurbishing the Parish Hall, installing a permanent means of controlling speeding traffic and environmental items. The Parish Hall continues with its gradual up-grade, the introduction of an electronically controlled speed warning system is taking longer than planned owing to the withdrawal of County Council funds, but by some means we will try to raise the necessary funds to install equipment and hopefully avoid that fatality that we all dread. Ingredients of the final item include the improvement of the two entrances to the Parish off the A5, one to Astcote the other into Fosters Booth Road, and of course a Pocket Park. I am very pleased to announce that towards the end of last year we applied for a BITESIZE grant from Northamptonshire ACRE and were awarded £440.00 this together with the generous donations of 4 inhabitants in the vacinity gave us £480.00 to spend on improving the road verge into Fosters Booth Road. A month ago work to clear the old and dead plants/trees was completed, thereafter the area to be planted was cleared chemically of weeds and compost spread throughout. 90 plants have been planted and I am grateful to those volunteers who helped, firstly clearing the area and then planting and I am further grateful to Ray Goviar who is undertaking the watering programme to insure the plants get a sound start. I hope all those who drive into Foster Booth Road will enjoy the improvements as they nurture and grow into maturing colourful plants, it has been done for your benefit and now I hope you take some responsibility in insuring their safe-keeping! Five events have made me think about the electr icity we use in our Par ish. 1. I tr avelled thr ough nor ther n Eur ope and obser ved dozens of windmills acr oss the flat plains which make up most of the landscape 2. An ar ticle in the Independent newspaper at the end of May wher e the fir st sentence was: Eur otunnel has unveiled plans to r un an electr icity link thr ough the Channel Tunnel as par t of effor ts to bolster UK power supplies 3. I have seen, close- up, thr ee of the nuclear power stations which sit on our coastline 4. The two lar ge coal- power ed power stations that dominate the town of Didcot near Oxfor d, and the Tr ent Valley near Nottingham ar e r egular landmar ks on my jour nies 5. Ger many has r ecently announced that it will close all its nuclear power stations by 2022 …. And I imagine we ar e all awar e of the pr oblems caused to a nuclear power station by the ear thquake in Japan. Ther e’s an old map which descr ibes the hills we live on her e as the “ Nor thamptonshir e Heights” ! It has str uck me ther efor e that it might not be long befor e someone applies for per mission to build one or mor e windmills, and that I r eally ought to make up my mind about the electr icity we need befor e that happens. All the above events have infor med my thinking. These ar e the questions I am r eflecting on: 1. How do I want the electr icity I use to be gener ated? 2. Wher e, exactly, do I want it to be gener ated? As I wr ite, it is a quiet summer ’s evening: punctuated by bir dsong, and by the sound of passing tr ains on the west coast mainline. Ther e is the continuous hum fr om the M1 in the backgr ound. So the thir d question I ask myself is this: 3. If the M1 and r ailway line wer e not ther e, would I object to them being built? I have not found easy answer s to any of these questions – but I thought it wor th shar ing them so that, when we meet at some village event, we might have a conver sation to help me make up my mind. Just in case I ever need to take a view about windmills somewher e near by. What is your exper ience? And your view, I wonder ? Tim Bar tlett, Pattishall

Pattishall Women’s Institute

Back in May we debated our Resolutions, this year they were on the closure of local libraries and setting up large scale farms. With the help of our WI advisor we had a lively discussion and were able to make an informed choice. This will now be taken to the National conference in June. At the end of May many of our members visited Denman College for a taster day, which included sessions on willow weaving, silk scarves, Tai Chi, and silver jewellery. June’s meeting was ‘Members Evening’ and this year we had a behind the scenes tour of our local Waitrose store in . We discussed where the produce comes from and what Waitrose are doing to help farmers and communities. The Waitrose Foundation helps communities in South Africa with farming and educational schemes to name a few. Produce from areas supported by the Waitrose Foundation carry it’s own unique logo. We explored the warehouse, which is very small; they have 3 deliveries a day to keep up with demand. At the end of the tour we were treated to cheese and wine. One thing on the WI’s mind is food labelling and we made some useful suggestions that we would like to see. We shall have a busy month in July, with a Curry Lunch and tabletop sale as well as having a talk from the Body Shop at our meeting. August will see us taking our usual summer ramble and in September we will be finding out about Victorian and Modern Beading. Bus Service News Update

Since the last Around Pattishall a lot has been happening as the Northamptonshire County Council gathered information across the County to establish what bus needs are and how they can be met within the much reduced budget. (£1million instead of £3.1million) The consultation at Towcester Town Hall on 18th May was very well attended and gave a very good overview of the plans with plenty of opportunity for views and questions to be raised. The meeting then hosted by our Parish Council on 23rd May was also well attended (32 people) and I was able to pass on the news that it is hoped to provide a 2-hourly service similar to the 87 service previously run. If this is not possible then it has been stressed to the NCC that if we can have a service to Towcester from there we can travel to or Milton Keynes. At the meeting I also reported that they hoped to improve the temporary timetable we now have. Understandably, they have now said that there is so much to be done by NCC and the bus companies to get the routes and timetables sorted for September that this will not be possible. There was a Bus Surgery in the Market Square in Northampton on 4th June which I attended to plug again the needs of Eastcote, Astcote and Pattishall. Pattishall Parish Council agreed to join Bus Users UK which enables us to have a voice at Northampton Members Meetings with NCC and representatives from the bus companies. I went along to a meeting on 11th June and was encouraged by the attention and concern given to rural areas. By 20th June all tenders for the new proposed routes should be with NCC. There will be a time of consultation before the end of July by which time the new network will be on the NCC website. Hopefully a new timetable will be up and running at the beginning of September. However, this will only happen if services can be run within the budget. Whatever service is provided as many people as possible need to try and make use of it to ensure its continuation. Some time in July you should be able to find out about the new network and any new bus timetables from the NCC website: www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/en/councilservices/transport/pubtrans/pages/bus changes.aspx If you aren’t able to access the internet Towcester Library will be happy to help you. When timetables are available they will be placed in the village notice boards, where possible in the Parish Council window. Thanks to all those who have attended the meetings, written and emailed. All we can do now is hope and pray for the best outcome. Ann Atkin
