Cold Higham Update

A number of people in the parish have raised the issue of dog fouling with the Parish Council. In particular fouling in the cemetery in Cold Higham has caused distress to some residents when visiting the graves of family and other loved ones. The Parish Council requests that people keep their dogs out of the cemetery whenever possible but recognises that a few residents would have a legitimate reason to take their dogs with them when visiting a grave or memorial. However, we would expect that everyone cleans up after their dog whenever fouling occurs. Fouling is distressing and antisocial in the cemetery but can have serious effects if it takes place where farm animals are present, for example when taking dogs through fields of livestock. Diseases carried in dog faeces can cause serious illnesses in children or farm animals who touch or ingest it. Once again, the Parish Council expects all residents to behave responsibly and clean up after their dogs. We have decided to hold another annual litter pick in the villages on Sunday 21 March at 11am. Starting points will be at the telephone boxes in Grimscote and Cold Higham and the pick will last around 90 minutes. We will supply bags and other basic equipment but would request that participants bring their own gloves. This event has become a popular and successful event for the villages in the parish and makes a positive contribution to the appearance of the area. It’s always surprising how much litter we collect. Finally, the Parish Council has decided to maintain the annual precept at the same level for the coming year. Although the parish precept represents only a small fraction of the overall council tax bill the Council felt that any increase this year would be unwelcome and unnecessary.

Allotments

The Parish council has made available some more space at the Eastcote Allotments for those on the waiting list. There will probably be some others available for those who would like to grow there own vegetables and exercise by digging! If you are interested please contact me, John Woollett, 01327 830470 or Ann Addison the Parish Clerk 01604 858226.

2 Around Pattishall March - April 2010 Pattishall Old Burial Ground

The Old Burial ground off Blacksmiths Close has for many years become over grown. The grass was rank and hedges become out of control. Via the Parish Council volunteers have strimmed the grass and cleared much of the rubbish that had accumulated. A local tree surgeon has been hard at work the past two weeks cutting out the overgrown Sycamore and elder as well as trimming the holly hedge but leaving the mature Holly trees for protection. The next stage is to plant a yew hedge along the southern boundary with volunteer help. It is the intention, subject to the necessary permissions and approval, to reuse some of the burial ground for future internments when the existing burial ground is full. John Woollett, Pattishall Parish Council

Pattishall Good Neighbours Club

Due to the bad weather we had no meeting in January to the disappointment of some members but I considered that the health and the safety of our members to be more important. At our February meeting we were entertained by the Watling Singers who put on an excellent programme for us, bringing some brightness into a cold winter day. Our next meeting will be our Annual General Meeting on 11 March when we shall elect our chairman, secretary, treasurer and committee for the next year. It is important that members attend this meeting and cast their votes as those they elect will be responsible for the future programme. I think the present officers and committee have done a pretty good job up to now and I thank them sincerely for all the time they have put in on our behalf. Ken and Rene Hooley will be standing down this time after several years on the committee. Following the AGM there will be a presentation by Barron Walton from South Northants Volunteer Bureau on the SAFE AND SOUND project supported by the Police, Fire Service and Care and Repair. This promises to be a very helpful and informative afternoon from which I am sure we shall all gain a lot. At our meeting on 8th April we shall be entertained by John Tearne, 'The Monologue Man',and I am told by someone who has seen and heard him that he is good and not to be missed. I look forward to meeting old and new friends and members on these days at 1.45pm in the Parish Hall. Alan White, Chairman. 4 Around Pattishall March - April 2010 Gardening Club

The Garden Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month from September through to May. We have recently had some excellent and interesting speakers which in many cases would also appeal to non gardeners. Last month Wendy Casson talked to us about, and brought along, many different varieties of snowdrops. Apparently there are over 140 varieties!! Next month, on the 3rd March, we have a talk on the "Changing Flora of ", and on the 7th April Jose Lepper from Paulerspury will be giving advice on Propagation. If you are interested come along. We meet in April 16th Pattishall Parish Hall at 7.30pm. John Woollett

Pattishall Women’s Institute

Having canceled last month's meeting because of the weather our new year got off to an excellent start with an interesting talk about the 'Maple Partnership', a general GP practice in Northampton that offers specialist services to people who are outside conventional society's groups - those with alcohol and drug problems, homeless people, asylum seekers as well as 'ordinary' people living in Northampton centre. Its funding regime is likely to change, so its ability to continue in the way it does now, is probably uncertain. Next month, on Wednesday March 10th we are having a wine growing and tasting evening with the proprietor of the Windmill Vineyard in Hellidon. This will be followed, on April 14th, by a talk and pastel demonstration by a wildlife artist whose animal pictures are magical. If you are interested in either of these, please do not hesitate to come along. You will be made very welcome as a visitor and if you decide to join we will be delighted to have you with us. We meet in Pattishal Parish Hall and the meeting usually comprises a speaker, refreshments and an exchange of information about what is going on locally and nationally. At May's meeting on Wednesday 12th we will be discussing the resolutions that have been put forward for the AGM in June. This will give greater insight into what the WI is doing nationally and offer a different take on the WI compared with most of our meetings. If you would like to know more about the WI or indeed arrange for someone to accompany you to the meeting, please ring the secretary, Janice Rogers 830208.

6 Around Pattishall March - April 2010 Don’t drown in Toxic Smoke Make sure you test your smoke alarm weekly

October saw the launch of the new national campaign ‘Don’t drown in Toxic Smoke.’ The campaign is aimed to raise awareness of the risk of not waking and drowning in smoke due to not having a working smoke alarm. 35 crimes – includes some minor incidents (excluding antisocial behaviour). The campaign is being run to raise awareness of just how two or three breaths of toxic smoke is similar to the sensation of drowning and can affect a person’s ability to breath and consequently wake up in the event of a fire. Research carried out has shown that people underestimate the impact of toxic smoke. In a survey almost half those asked believed they could survive for more than 2 minutes in a smoke-filled room and over half thought they would wake up due to the smell of the smoke. In some cases you may have less than two minutes to get out of a household fire alive. By having a working smoke alarm you have an increased chance of waking, and escaping.

Emma Yoxen, District Liaison Officer for the Fire & Rescue Service, added “Our fire-fighters regularly see the effects of fires in the home. The frustrating thing is that so much heartbreak and unhappiness could be avoided if people took the simple precaution of arranging for a free home fire safety check and ensuring they have working smoke alarms and check them weekly. There is really no excuse for not having one, we’re here to help”. Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service offers home fire safety checks free of charge to the public. You can arrange for a fire-fighter to visit your home to give advice and guidance on how to prevent fires and other hazards. Also to install free smokes alarms if you need them. All you have to do is contact us and we’ll do the rest. Call 0800 38 999 50 today or email [email protected].

BeKind Charity (Benefitting European Kids in Need and Distress)

Once again we have taken a large amount of blankets, jumpers, hats, scarves, gloves, toiletries etc. to Banbury for the above charity. The items should now have reached the children who need them. Thank you very much to all those people who have knitted and given items for the children. The list is too long to mention individual people. The charity tells me that they particularly need jumpers, etc. to fit children aged 10 years and upwards. My stock of wool is getting quite low, so please look in your cupboards and pass on to me any spare wool you may have. Odd balls of wool are welcome. Hello: I have recently become a Distributor for the Utility Warehouse Discount Club as a result of being a satisfied customer of theirs and saving a significant amount of money off my utility bills. You may not have heard of the Utility Warehouse Discount Club before, as they do not advertise. Instead, they rely on satisfied customers letting their friends and family know about the great value services they deliver. They share the money they save with their members, which means you benefit from the best value in the UK! The Utility Warehouse Discount Club is operated by Telecom plus PLC, a major British company whose shares are listed on the London Stock Exchange. They provide their members with great value, great savings and the best possible customer service. Perhaps it’s not surprising that in a recent survey, over 94% of Utility Warehouse customers said they would recommend them to a friend. The Utility Warehouse is very different to other suppliers. They don’t have any high street shops and their systems are very efficient. And because (unlike their competitors) they don’t waste money on expensive advertising campaigns on TV or in the National Press, they can afford to charge their customers less than they do for the same services. With membership starting from just £1.73 per month you could benefit from… Free calls to UK and international numbers Best value broadband and phone package Savings of around £50 on your line rental Cheaper gas and electricity UK’s best value mobile services 5% CashBack on your petrol and shopping Unique customer discount plan Exclusive membership discounts All the services you choose being invoiced to you on one simple invoice If you would like to find out more; please call me at home on 830515 or on free-phone 0800 380 0759. 16 Around Pattishall March - April 2010 Sponsored Walk – Rogation Sunday 9 May 2010 In aid of the Parish Hall development fund

Ten years ago there were many Parish events and projects to celebrate the new Millennium including: A new Parish sign, the forget-me-not wildflower garden in the Churchyard and a way-marked walk around the Parish boundary. The Millennium walk was a sponsored event that raised funds to support the other projects – many parishioners walked the route on Rogation Sunday, revising the old tradition of Beating the Bounds.

Beating the Bounds The Vestry had the responsibility of walking the boundary of the Parish at Rogationtide – the three days before Ascension Day. The incumbent, parish officers, prominent vestrymen and a good many school children employed for the occasion, armed with the authority of a wand of office, checked that boundary stones were in position and that no buildings encroached, unrated, on parish territory. The custom continued well into the 19 th Century, long after maps made the occasion irrelevant. This year as we enter the second decade of the Millennium we are going to Beat the Bounds again as a sponsored walk to raise money for the Parish Hall development fund. The sponsored walk will begin and end at the Parish Hall and although the full route is 18 kilometres (almost 12 miles), it will be divided into three sections. This will offer walkers options for shorter return routes to the Hall if they do not wish to complete the full circuit. We are also considering a short ‘school’ route from the hall to the parish boundary and back to enable smaller children and their parents to join in. Details of the full route are available on the Parish website: http://pattishallparish.org.uk/content/PattishallCP1.pdf The Parish footpath network is well used in parts although some of the attractive areas and routes at the extremes of the Parish Boundary appear less well known. So this is a good opportunity to explore, join in the fun on the day and raise some sponsorship to help improve your Parish Hall. Sponsorship Forms, routes and further details for the day will be available in March. Please note the date – Sunday 9t h May - in your diary and support this event. Bob Illingworth 830829

17 Around Pattishall March - April 2010 Reduce Your Carbon Footprint!

Residents in Pattishall will have the opportunity to find out more about renewable energy at a special event organised by the Energy Saving Trust, in partnership with South Northamptonshire Council. With the recent announcement of financial incentives from the government, there has never been a better time to invest in technologies such as solar thermal, solar photovoltaic, air or ground source heat pumps and biomass. For example, the Clean Energy cashback will be available to people with solar photovoltaics and the energy companies will pay for all the electricity generated and for any electricity exported back to the grid. Energy Efficiency Officer at the council, Alan Isaac said: “Thousands of people across the UK are using renewable technologies to generate their own energy. Many of them are now reaping the benefits of lower fuel bills as well as reducing their carbon emissions.” The event is at Pattishall Village Hall Thursday, 18th March, 2010, 2.00pm – 7.00pm. Those attending the event will have the opportunity to request a free impartial home energy survey to assess its suitability for renewable energy. Free refreshments will be available to all attendees. To find out more visit the advice surgery or call the Energy Saving Trust advice centre for on free phone 0800 512012.

The Senior Citizens were again well catered for at the Christmas Lunch organised by Libby Covington and her band of cooks, waiters and waitresses, not forgetting the washer-ups. Many thanks to all those who made this event possible. The 1940’s evening was a great success and Ruzzit Buzzit entertained us with many dances, games and songs. Over 100 plates of sausage, mash and onion gravy were served followed by steamed pudding and custard and everyone still managed to get up and dance. Around eighty film goers enjoyed Mamma Mia and there was plenty of audience participation with the singing. The committee are aiming to have a varied programme of events for all the community and hope that you will be able to support us on these occasions. Come along on Sunday 18th April 2-4pm for afternoon tea and find out what’s on at the hall and the progress of the refurbishment. Information on all the events, clubs, organisations, local walks as well as second-hand books and bits and pieces. Seats for Paul Daniels Magic Show are now on sale. This has been quite a coup for the entertainments committee so phone 01327 830678 for tickets. See separate article for more details. The AGM’s of the Hall and Playing Field Associations will be held on Thursday 6th May 2010 at 7.00pm. If the hall is unavailable, due to an election, the meetings will be held at Pattishall School. We have been awarded a grant of £5,000 from Garfield Weston towards the hall refurbishment. Since June we have raised £2,500 from events. A sponsored walk is arranged for Sunday 9th May, again see article for more information. The netting and lights around the hard court are to be repaired in the spring. Lucy’s World Challenge

The time is flying past and it is now this year that I am off to Ecuador with my team! Christmas was a particularly busy time and I would like to thank everyone who bought jewellery from me at various events. I have raised over £2,100 so far but still have a way to go to reach my target of £3,595. Recently I have been able to raise additional funds by recycling mobile phones and Pattishall Primary School has agreed to help me by acting as a collection point for handsets. Perhaps you had a new phone for Christmas and could donate your old one? Any handset is welcome (working or not) and I do not need chargers etc. Please drop them into school anytime, it would be helpful if you could attach a note saying they are for me if the school is closed. If you would like to know more about my expedition or would prefer me to collect any old phones please give me a call on 01327 830334 Lucy Stratton

Special Constables are involved in a very diverse mixture of police work, a typical shift can involve crewing up with another Special or Regular Officer, and responding to calls from the public when they come in. This could be anything form anti-social behaviour to a serious assault! You may find that a large amount of your time will be spent carrying out proactive high visibility patrols in your area. This is of course very important as it improves public confidence and can deter crime before it happens. Special Constables are often called upon to support specific operations across the force. This can present you with a number of exciting opportunities as you could be involved in, plain clothes work, intelligence gathering and executing search warrants, to name but a few. Becoming a Special Constable is ideal for those who want to help their local Police Officers and PCSO’s and put something back in to their community. It is also an ideal position for those who wish to become full-time Police Officers to gain excellent experience and life skills to aid them in applying. For more information on the role, to receive an application form, or to view our upcoming Open Evenings please visit www.northants.police.uk/careers or call Lizzi Betts on 03000 111 222 ext 2098, our specials recruitment administrator who will be happy to advise you. We look forward to hearing from you!

Pattishall Tennis Club

Pattishall Village Hall Committee are trying to increase the use of the fantastic facility of our Tennis Court. We are thinking that if there is enough interest we could start a village 'Tennis Club'. We really need to know if there is enough support to develop this idea. Therefore, if you are interested in playing tennis on our local court I would be very interested in hearing from you. At the very least we could start a 'Tennis Ladder' which is an informal way to play other people who also enjoy tennis! If you would like to register your interest and/or to share thoughts on this potential project please email me on [email protected], or telephone me or Roger: Nic Boyd (830226) Roger Clarke (830509)

22 Around Pattishall March - April 2010 Parish and Town Plans Grant

Do you need money for a community consultation project? Are you looking for funding for actions from your Parish Plan? How does £500 with NO match funding sound?! Northamptonshire Community Foundation (NCF), with whom we are working in partnership to deliver the Grassroots Grants Funding Programme, supports this extension of the current Parish Plan Grant Pot. Through our work with parishes across the county, we have recognised a need for focused community consultations, which are on a smaller scale to Parish Plans, dealing with just one topic that a complete Parish Plan might cover. For example, many parishes are concerned about youth provision and would be interested in consulting with their young people and devising an action plan to take the results of their consultation forward, all of which could be accomplished within just a few months. Also, many Parish Plan Steering Groups or Action Groups are struggling to move their completed Parish Plans forward because they are finding it difficult to get funding for their actions, which more often than not, are for relatively small amounts of money. So, we have decided to respond to this need and extend the parameters of the Parish Plan Grant Pot to include applications for “Parish Plan Tasters” (with the encouragement and support to move towards a full Parish Plan following the successful completion of a ‘taster’ section) and also for actions that are directly born from previously completed Parish Plans. Grants of up to £500 are now available with no requirement for match funding. The next deadline for applications is Friday 26th March 2010. Application forms are available on Northamptonshire ACRE’s website (www.northantsacre.org.uk) or direct from your Rural Officer Beth Milne. We look forward to hearing from you!

Grant for Pattishall Parish Hall Kitchen Refurbishment

The Parish Council has sent a letter thanking County Councillor Ben Smith for kindly agreeing to help with the refurbishment of the Parish Hall kitchen. Councillor Smith has agreed to contribute £999.00 from his allowance under the "Empowering Councillors & Communities Scheme". The Parish Council is delighted with the contribution and knows it will go a long way in helping the much needed kitchen refurbishment. Ann Addison, Clerk to the Council

Pattishall Pre-School 30th Birthday

The Pre-School celebrates its 30th birthday this year and we are celebrating through-out the year. We begin our festivities in February and will be cutting and sharing a birthday cake with the children after they take part in our annual sponsored obstacle course.
