We spent a very interesting afternoon in February listening to Anita Smith tell us how she helped to re-build the children’s ward at Bansang Hospital, from making the bricks to building the walls, putting the roof on and furnishing with beds and equipment. In March we spent an enjoyable social afternoon, as those of you who attended will recall well. Makes a change to be able to talk to one another without being rude to anyone who was giving us a talk! April will find us listening to Natasha Thompson “How can I keep from singing”. I think myself we’ll finish up singing ourselves, if not in the meeting or on the way home if only in our heads. May will be our Bring & Buy which gives us all a chance to get rid of items that we cannot find any use for and hope that its what someone else wants or needs. See you at our next meeting. P Gilkes, Hon Sec, 830805 Cold Higham Art Classes for 2011 Suitable for beginners - you will be very welcome in our friendly group. We meet most Thursdays 7-9 pm. We cover all the basics and painting techniques. Please contact : Colin Bywater 01327 830343, or just turn up on the evening! Sure Start at Mums and Tots Mums and Tots offers a chance to meet with other mums, dads, grandparents or carers of babies and pre-school children whilst enjoying tea, cake and a chat. Sure Start, a charity organisation, are now visiting the sessions on a regular basis bringing different activities for the children each week. These include construction toys, art & craft sessions, musical activities and singing. There are large toys and good indoor space for babies and young children to play in. Mums and Tots meet on a Wednesday from 1.30 – 3.00pm at Pattishall Parish Hall. You will be made very welcome, just call in or if you would like further information please phone Jo Townsend 07805 535132 3 Around Pattishall May & June 2011 Cold Higham Parish Council Many thanks to everyone who helped with the annual litter pick on Sunday 20 March. More people took part than in previous years which meant the teams cleaning the various villages were able to cover more verges and footpaths without taking any longer. Because of this we uncovered a few large and bulky items that would otherwise have remained in the hedgerows. Thanks too to the various members of the community who were unable to join in on the day but who “did their bit” in the week or so before and after the main event. Your efforts have not gone un-noticed. The litter was collected by SNC who also loaned us some litter picking equipment for the weekend. Nominations have now closed for the forthcoming parish council elections. There were six nominations, all for existing councillors, for the seven vacancies so at the time of writing it is assumed that these will be elected automatically. I am sure all members will join me in wishing him a full and speedy recovery and a quick return to the Guildhall. On 26th March we announced that the Borough Council is working with Local Government Shared Services (LGSS), the organisation set up to share services between Northamptonshire County Council and Cambridgeshire County Council, to explore the potential of joining the partnership. LGSS was set up more than a year ago to provide a wide range of support services for both local authorities. Since the establishment of LGSS, the two founding authorities have saved £11 million and to join the partnership could pave the way for savings for Northampton Borough Council in administration and other back office costs. The Borough Council is at an early stage in negotiations with LGSS and no decision has yet been made over which services could be included in any sharing agreement. LGSS provides a full range of back-office services, including IT, HR, finance, property and asset management and other services. The Northampton Alive Roadshow meetings have started with members of the Cabinet and myself going out and speaking to the public at a series of public meetings.

Just one of the schools badly affected is Burnley Road Academy in Calderdale, which suffered severe flood damage. In excess of 16,000 homes across Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cumbria and parts of Scotland were affected and the cost of the damage is over £1billion. A teacher from Upton Meadows Primary School had the idea of sending unwanted children’s books to the schools affected. She got in touch with the Northamptonshire Emergency Response Corps (NERC), a Community Organisation and Charity who brings together various agencies involved in emergency response in the County, who launched an appeal which was then supported by Northampton County Council to help schools replace the hundreds of books they lost in the floods.

Some of the bishops, including from our link dioceses in Korea, will be spending a few days beforehand at Launde Abbey with Bishop Donald and myself. A key theme of the conference will be the global climate emergency that is already impacting the dioceses from which some of the bishops serve. For example, low-lying areas flooded by rising sea-levels and conflict triggered by expanding deserts, forcing people to move and compete for scarce land. Archbishop Justin has recorded a short interview highlighting this aspect of Lambeth 2020. You can view it here. As we approach the season of Lent I’d like to commend two ways in which we can engage with these important matters from the perspective of our Christian faith: The Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lent Book, Saying Yes to Life by Ruth Valerio, is a brilliant exploration of what it means to look after God’s world, reflecting on creation themes including light, water, land and seasons alongside environmental concerns.
