In “To Remake the World,” Hawken observes that the millions of people now working around the planet for peace, justice, sustainability and conservation, democracy, human rights, and a fair economy constitute a massive grassroots uprising that will almost certainly change the world for the better. Hawken is a visionary entrepreneur, author, and global activist who has spoken with thousands of people about their projects and organizations over the past several years. He has concluded that, “by conventional definition, this is not a movement. Movements have leaders and ideologies. You join movements, study tracts, and identify yourself with a group. Movements have followers, but this movement doesn’t work that way. It is dispersed, inchoate, and fiercely independent. There is no manifesto or doctrine, no authority Ron Miller to check with. I sought a name for it, but there isn’t one.” This description perfectly applies to our “movement” for educational alternatives! Thousands of people are creating spaces for authentic and meaningful learning, giving young people opportunities to experience personal autonomy and democratic communities. Except for some rather loose affiliations among philosophically similar endeavors, there are really no leaders or doctrines, and we’ve never been able to agree on a name. Hawken notes that this cultural revolution is pretty much “eluding the radar of mainstream culture,” and this is especially true of educational activism. In our small, local, independent ventures, we are changing the world one community, one family, even one child at a time. Sometimes the media will run a feature story about homeschoolers, treating them as a curiosity, but the significance of our efforts is almost entirely under this culture’s radar. What is important to remember is that we are part of something larger—much larger. Every example we offer to the world—every homeschooling family and unconventional school and democratic oasis in public education—sows a seed of the new civilization that is undeniably emerging. Whenever we wonder what effect our work might have, let us recall, as Hawken states, that we are aligned with “tens of millions of ordinary and not-so-ordinary people willing to confront despair, power, and incalculable odds in order to restore some semblance of grace, justice, and beauty to this world.” When you sit in a parents’ meeting and parent after parent blesses you for starting the school and some get all teary-eyed when they think of how happy “ their kids are and how unhappy they used to be, it will definitely feel like it's been worth it. Abstract An online survey of unschooling families (student-directed form of homeschooling) sought to discover whether and how unschooled children experience a social justice curriculum (one that seeks equity between cultures, ethnicities, genders, classes, and sexualities). The 2016 survey asked about unschooled children’s relationships with/recognition of people different from themselves, their degree of critical analysis of systems and institutions in society which created, maintain, and perpetuate inequities, and whether they had opportunities to envision and work for a just and equitable society. The philosophical tenets of unschooling complicate this query, and are explored. Findings illustrate that unschooling’s educational philosophy of “curriculum-as- lived” (as opposed to “curriculum-as-plan”) (Aoki, 2004) has the potential (though not realized by all unschooling families) to provide a unique approach to social justice/multicultural education, allowing unschooled children to learn about minoritized cultures, systems that led to the minoritization, and the possibilities and pathways to a more equitable society. Keywords unschooling, multicultural education, social justice, student-directed learning, homeschooling Introduction Unschooling defined Student-directed learning in the home, termed unschooling (Farenga, 1999), is a form of education in which parents eschew a formal or standardized curriculum and instead allow their children curricular freedom. In unschooling, “the learner’s freedom and autonomy [is] limited as little as possible, ...learning always starts with the individual’s needs, goals, and desires, and not with any supposed body of knowledge or societal demands” (Miller, 2004).

Near the end of the conference, a group of seven educators from public and private schools around the country rallied to a call-to-action to revive the Network of Progressive Educators, which had been inactive since the early 1990s. Inspired by the progressive tenets of the conference, the group shared a grand collective mission: to establish a national group to rise up, protect, clarify, and celebrate the principles of progressive education and to fashion a revitalized national educational vision. This group, “The PEN Seven” (Maureen Cheever, Katy Dalgleish, Tom Little, Kate (McLellan) Blaker, John Pecore, Lisa Shapiro, and Terry Strand) hosted the organization’s first national conference in San Francisco in 2007. As a result of the committee’s efforts, the Progressive Education Network (PEN) was formed and in 2009 was incorporated as a 501 (c) 3 charitable, non-profit organization. Biannual conferences, supported by PEN and produced by various committees, followed in DC, Chicago, and LA, with attendance growing from 250 to 950.

I'm pleased to be with you this morning to discuss the final-form revisions to Chapter 4 that have been the subject of much debate and deliberation. I'd like to begin by providing a sense of history related to the key issues addressed in this regulatory package, and then will discuss the process undertaken by the Board that has led us here today. In 2006, concerns were brought to the Board's attention that many students were graduating from high school without adequate preparation for entering the workforce or college. This was evidenced by data that showed more than 40% of Pennsylvania's high school graduates - representing more than 50,000 students each year - were being awarded diplomas without demonstrating proficiency on the state's reading, writing and math tests. Additional data showed that fewer than half of our high school graduates enrolled in college upon graduation, only 37% persisted to their sophomore year, and just one-third graduated from college on time. Further, a February 2009 survey of our state's 14 community colleges and 14 state-owned universities found that 62,000 students at the schools were enrolled in remedial coursework at a cost exceeding $26 million annually.

HOMESCHOOL RESOURCE CENTERS, LEARNING CENTERS Within the next 20 years community learning centers will become increasingly important as educational sources, often replacing what we now refer to as "schools." AERO is developing a kind of kit for people who want to start such programs. It was born of a need for interaction with people I had met all around the United States and in other countries, not long after I had resigned as Executive Director and National Coordinator of the National Coalition of Alternative Community Schools. Specifically, I needed help from people to match the grant from the Bay Foundation for the Kee Way Win Project, to help the tribe start a school on their ancestral land where there had been no school before. You, my friends, came through. The grant was matched, through cash donations, material and supplies. I went to Kee Way Way, and they have started a school. I hope to go again. I left the NCACS for a combination of political and personal reasons, yet I am still a member, and continue to help the people that I trained at their national office in Tennessee. I went to the Eastern Regional Caucus at the Free School in Albany, and I plan to go to the national conference near Washington this week. The NCACS still has some serious internal problems to wrestle with, and I will help to the extent that is seems mutually useful. But I think it is good that I now do the work that I am doing independently. So what is AERO-GRAMME? Everyone on the mailing list is a person or group that I know personally, at least through mail or phone, with those I have met on the Prodigy Network falling between the two.

    GRIGGS, CHARLES BRADFORD, Ph.D. Positive Freedom: An Exploration of Pedagogical Citizenship. (2010) Directed By H. Svi Shapiro. 216pp. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the pedagogical attempt to teach for citizenship in the public school setting. Using the tools of critical/ liberatory pedagogy the critical scholar embarked on a discovery of the foundations of his pedagogical practice, by exploring his subject stance while teaching with a democratic mindset. This dissertation proposes that there is a crisis of democratic citizenship in this country. The crisis is due to forces of oppression and is exacerbated by the lack of democratic practice in schools and society. By uncovering the techniques inherent in critical pedagogy and the free school movement the dissertation seeks to place the subject/ researcher within the mental context of liberation while engaged in a systematic autobiographical record of his teaching practices. From this autobiographic stance the researcher will reflect upon his own teaching and understandings as they are presented. The findings indicate that liberatory/ critical pedagogy is a difficult practice and creates tensions within the authoritarian bodies that control schooling. The research also suggests that democracy is only an abstract concept in schooling and cannot be practiced in traditional public school settings. The original premise of the research, that there is a “crisis of democratic citizenship” and part of that crisis is due to the lack of practice in schools, is advanced by this dissertation.
