Free schools offer an unstructured curriculum in which comparisons between students are eliminated and students are empowered to be responsible for their learning. Proponents of this approach to education believe that public schools fail by maintaining the status quo and suppressing student abilities through conformist educational practices. Articles cover the disadvantages and outcomes of compulsory public education; developing a relevant curriculum that encourages critical thinking; home schooling; the political aspects of public education; parent information on child rearing; effective teaching practices; teaching children values; and book and film reviews. Two of the journal issues are devoted to writings and other work by students at the Free School in Albany, New York. These writings represent student learning, creative writing projects, and student educational experiences. Chris Mercogliano When I was a kid, I was sure that education occurred only within the four walls of public school beginning at 9 AM and 5 ending at 3 PM. When I wasn't actually enjoying myself in school with something I found exciting on my own terms, the. game I and many of my classmates played was to resist as much as possible and to do just enough to get by. Whew! and Wow! I'm honored to join the editorial staff of /MAE, where the institutionalized schemes of education are examined and challenged, innovators in education are given a forum, learn- ing is acknowledged as something that goes on all the time, and children are seen as people. Larry Becker Hello! I'm joining the editorial staff of ZICOAEand what a privilege it is. IKOAE is more important than ever in getting out the word about what education can be like. Today, when so many of us (like myself) have been educated in the public school system, and enured to the damage it often routinely does to children's sense of themselves, IKOAE is filled with articles and individual stories saying, "It doesn't have to be like that.""The child matters more than the system." "It's not that hard." Take a look at the article on fear by Chris if you want to understand more about why we keep thinking it is! Anyway, here I am and glad to be here. Ellen Becker There was a great deal I loved about school, the learning, the kids, the contact with people other than my family (I lived in a small country town with no kids my age close to where I lived). However I remember being frustrated when I really did want to know something off the beaten path and I was told "You don't have to know that. It's not on the regents (required testing in New York State)." One thing that I see coming from IKOAE is articles that deal with the excitement of learning and different ways to - 6 capture that element in the learning process.It certainly has taught me that there was so much more that I could have gained in those early years had my "schooling" been different. I am pleased to become a part of a Journal that opens the doors for its readers to all kinds of possibilities for learning and discovery in the broadest sense of the words and because of this can make a difference for our Earth today. Connie Frisbee Houde The new format will actually start with the Spring issue, but since we have a number of new subscribers whose sub- scriptions start with this issue, we wanted to introduce you to the staff. This change comes about as a result of the creationby the six of usof our new periodical, The Journal of Family Life. The widespread acceptance of this new publication has awakened me to the value of making changes which will allow XKOAE to reach a wider audience through modifying its format from that of a quasi-academic journal to a more popular one. I am hoping the proposed changes will improve reader acessibility. But whatever we do in the future, there will be six voices making these changes, not one. Hooray for the new staff! FROM THE SUN MAGAZINE: Twenty-six years of award-winning teaching have led John Gatto to some troubling conclusions about the public schools. A seventh-grade teacher, Gatto has been named New York City Teacher of the Year and New York State Teacher of the Year. Praised by leaders as diverse as Ronald Reagan and Mario Cuomo, he's a political maverick whose views defy easy categorization. Gatto is also a local legend on Manhattan's Upper West Side, where he grows garlic, plays chess, writes songsand once won a Citizen of the Week Award for coming to the aid of a woman who had been robbed A collection of his essays Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum Of Compulsory Schooling was published earlier this year by New Society Publishers.

    Other Education: The Journal of Educational Alternatives ISSN 2049-2162 Volume 7(2018), Issue 2 · pp. 97-117 Unschooling and Social Justice/Multicultural Education: (Un)Realized Potential Kristan Morrison Radford University, US. Abstract An online survey of unschooling families (student-directed form of homeschooling) sought to discover whether and how unschooled children experience a social justice curriculum (one that seeks equity between cultures, ethnicities, genders, classes, and sexualities). The 2016 survey asked about unschooled children’s relationships with/recognition of people different from themselves, their degree of critical analysis of systems and institutions in society which created, maintain, and perpetuate inequities, and whether they had opportunities to envision and work for a just and equitable society. The philosophical tenets of unschooling complicate this query, and are explored. Findings illustrate that unschooling’s educational philosophy of “curriculum-as- lived” (as opposed to “curriculum-as-plan”) (Aoki, 2004) has the potential (though not realized by all unschooling families) to provide a unique approach to social justice/multicultural education, allowing unschooled children to learn about minoritized cultures, systems that led to the minoritization, and the possibilities and pathways to a more equitable society. Keywords unschooling, multicultural education, social justice, student-directed learning, homeschooling Introduction Unschooling defined Student-directed learning in the home, termed unschooling (Farenga, 1999), is a form of education in which parents eschew a formal or standardized curriculum and instead allow their children curricular freedom. In unschooling, “the learner’s freedom and autonomy [is] limited as little as possible, ...learning always starts with the individual’s needs, goals, and desires, and not with any supposed body of knowledge or societal demands” (Miller, 2004).

    2 Television and audio-visual content 2 2.1 Recent developments in Northern Ireland Switchover success Northern Ireland was the final region of the UK to make the switch from analogue to digital TV broadcasting, in October 2012. Homes across Northern Ireland now have access to a wider range of terrestrial digital television channels. At the same time, three Republic of Ireland channels (RTÉ One and Two, and TG4) began broadcasting from transmitters in Northern Ireland, at Brougher Mountain (between Enniskillen and Omagh), Black Mountain and Carnmoney Hill (both above Belfast). This coverage, combined with overspill from the Republic’s version of Freeview – known as Saorview – means that RTÉ and TG4 are now widely available in Northern Ireland; coverage has increased from 56% of the population to 94%. In addition, RTÉ One, RTÉ Two and TG4 are available on satellite (Sky) and cable (Virgin Media). The enhanced coverage came about as a result of a Memorandum of Understanding between the UK and Irish governments which aimed to ensure the widespread availability of these services in Northern Ireland after digital switchover. Local TV In October 2012 NvTv was awarded a new local TV licence for Belfast, one of 19 new licences awarded across the UK. NvTv has operated an analogue TV channel since 2004 in the Belfast area, and online until digital switchover, under a long-term restricted-service TV licence. The general aims of the new digital channel are to broadcast local news, current affairs and a wide range of creative, educational, and entertaining programming. The new local TV services, the first of which could be on air in late 2013, will be broadcast at a city or sub-regional level and will be available on Channel 8 on the Freeview platform in Northern Ireland.

A PERSONAL JOURNEY INTO HOME LEARNING By: Colleen RAJA Abstract In this narrative the author, Colleen Raja, shares her personal experience and reflections on the decision she made to homeschool. Through reflection and story she shares her own struggles and triumphs in learning about herself, her surroundings and the true desires and needs of her children. She also addresses and debunks some of the typical stereotypes and objections to home learning. In the end she sees that what had taken her several years to discover about and desire from the lifestyle of home learning took her children mere moments to embrace. Rationale The Beginning Choosing to homeschool wasn’t a natural decision. For my part it was very much about care, love, and concern, I will refrain from speaking about my husband other than to say how very supportive he always is of my ‘strange’ or unconventional ideas. When I was a young single-mom, of 19, I didn’t believe in homeschooling as something that was good for children. I laugh now, thinking about how absurd and naive my own impressions were, nonetheless I came by them honestly, as I suspect many others do. It was through a series of coincidental conversations with people who were clearly more open than I was, that I began to realize that my misunderstandings on homeschooling were more stereotypes than truth and far more prejudicial than reasonably commonsensical.

Our publication has made a gradual transformation from an letter to friends, to a newsletter, an in-house magazine, and now to a magazine with a more general audience. With our incorporation of Changing Schools into AERO-Gramme, we began to run longer and more in-depth articles. Finally, we have decided to rename AERO-Gramme with the name of our two radio shows, the Education Revolution, reflecting our mission, and the reality of the changes for which we hopes to be both a reporter and catalyst. HOMESCHOOL RESOURCE CENTERS, LEARNING CENTERS Within the next 20 years community learning centers will become increasingly important as educational sources, often replacing what we now refer to as "schools." We now see the beginnings of this movement. Almost every day, AERO is contacted by people who are interested in starting such a center, or for whom this is an answer. AERO is developing a kind of kit for people who want to start such programs. This issue features three of these cutting edge centers: Puget Sound Community School and Clearwater School, in Seattle, and Pathfinder Learning Center, in Amherst, MA.
