Batman's former bodyguard Sasha Bordeaux -- and Max's Black Knight -- turns against Max and alerts Batman of the murder; he reveals to the JLA both Beetle's death, his recollection of being mindwiped by the early Justice League, and his subsequent creation of Brother I, a - tracking satellite. Batman locates Sasha in one of Beetle's warehouses, and they are attacked by OMACs -- cybernetic monsters built around innocent human hosts. Max uses his mind-control powers to brainwash Superman and attack Batman; Wonder Woman is forced to kill Max to free him. Batman discovers a weapon that Beetle built that would stop the OMACs, and gathers a team of heroes to trap them; Sasha, revealed as cybernetic herself, is able to shut down others, but not before Rocket Red and others are killed. Batman states early on that the mind is the one true thing he can control; the body -- the heart -- can betray you, as with his feelings for Sasha. But we learn that the mind is just as tricky -- not only did the Justice League take Batman's memories from him, but Max Lord's specialty is corrupting the mind. In the end, we're given the sense that perhaps there is a value to the body; when Sasha Bordeaux decries her newfound mechanical status, Batman tells her she's not a machine solely because she can feel. This is complicated, however, by the newly autonomous Brother Eye, who Batman claims can't feel at all -- except it ends the story by taking revenge on Wonder Woman for her killing Lord. I've noticed that in the wake of 's detailed Identity Crisis , much of the discussion surrounding Infinite Crisis has been in what the "theme" or "point" of the story is -- questions no one asked back in the day of : Last Laugh or Day of Judgment. demonstrated in I Can't Believe It's Not the Justice League how these characters, despite all the jokes, truly care about one another; this was perverted, somewhat, when Maxwell Lord shot Blue Beetle in the head. But in a truly inspired moment, teams up with -- without hesitation, and with all jokes laid aside -- to hunt for Beetle's killer, and when they get in touch with , she's already been searching herself; Rucka also includes Super-Buddy . Home Comics The Omac Project. Okay, for those of you coming in late, here's your quick lowdown. Issue 1 Issue 1 So that man may live Ouch. This comic doesn't mess about. Within the first pages we are treated to the cold and heartless disposal of the body of the Blue Beetle, a much loved and fondly thought of B-hero who died via gunshot to the head. It's brutal, it's shocking, it's moving. Good comics should aspire to all this, but in the case of the loss of Blue Beetle I'm not convinced that the lonely death of a popular character is the way to go about it. Anyone could write the death of say, Superman and sell a million copies. Oh wait, they did that already! The death of a long-running character should mean more than a cheap way to draw readers in, which for the majority of fans was how this came across. His murderer, Maxwell Lord is ruling the secret ex-government task force known as Checkmate with an iron fist of tyranny, and while Sasha an ex of Batmans is part of the Checkmate team, and deeply sickened by what has occurred she daren't speak up for fear of her life. Indeed she carries on the pretense of being loyal knowing she is potentially monitored constantly by Checkmates mysterious "eye" computer system. Elsewhere, Batman realises the system he calls "brother" has seemingly gone out of contact with him. Beetles best friend, Booster Gold starts the search for his buddy, regretting the little attention that he and the other heroes gave Beetle when he felt he was under threat, quite correctly as it turned out - though Booster doesnt know that yet. Right now, Beetle seems to be just missing. Sasha finally gets a message to Batman and he realises that "brother" just became a threat. His secret system just went rogue though it's not clear to us readers yet just what it was capable of Issue 2 Once more Batman thinks back to his recent discovery in Countdown to Infinite Crisis that years prior he chanced upon some of the JLA members using magic to erase the memories of selected foes, effectively giving the unwilling recipient lobotomies. Enraged at this inhumane treatment carried out by a kangaroo court, Batman was also given the same enchantment to remove the knowledge of his team mates actions. To be fair, the "guilty" heroes were in a situation that many, including myself, felt demanded this radical step It is clear Batmans "brother" program is at least partially a response to his newly discovered lack of trust and faith in his colleagues. The rape and murder of Sue Dibny in Identity Crisis is discussed by Ted as a moment where the lighter and softer characters in the DC Universe were torn apart. Sue herself was treated as an embodiment of those earlier innocent times. She represented a better time for us. A time when we were allowed to laugh. Instead, The O. Project assigns those adventures their own gritty . They only seemed light a fun. What they really were was an attempt to subvert the ideal of the , with Max Lord working as an inside man. Even the title itself — The O. Project — is perversion of an earlier innocent creation. So to bring it back as an instrument of mass destruction is just as perverse as murdering Skeets and using him for parts. Ted Kord is the first to deduce what Max Lord is up to. Fire figures it out as well, using deductive reasoning. Batman created the problem, Kord solved it. Even Batman admits he screwed up pretty significantly in causing this situation. This time, the mistake is catastrophic. Project , and Infinite Crisis in general. Batman has failed before, but never quite on this scale. Superman and Batman have fought one another, but never with consequences like this. Wonder Woman has had to do things that are unpleasant but necessary, but never this unpleasant. I think The O. Project comes very close to crossing that line with Batman. Project comes pretty close to presenting it. There is an air of introspection here, a sense that DC are really reflecting on where they have positioned these characters, and the implications that these modern darker interpretations might have. They broke the promise. This whole situation could have been avoided if the characters had simply trusted one another, instead of becoming self-righteous and morally-compromised crusaders. It happens quite a bit over Infinite Crisis that villains give voice to legitimate concerns about how DC manages its iconic properties. Superboy- Prime is the most obvious example, calling out most modern DC heroes as failures for being unable to live up to the moral standards expected of them. However, the villains are generally incorrect in how they seek to address these problems. Superboy-Prime wants to reset things back to the way they were, and to wipe out everything that has happened — to literally live in the past. In most cases, the solutions that villains suggest to the legitimate problems raised in Infinite Crisis is one predicated on destruction and regression. In contrast, the heroes must endure, but accept that some of the criticism carries weight. I really like The O. C Project , both on its own terms and as a lead-in to Infinite Crisis. I think it covers the thematic ground almost perfectly, and connects to the main series in perhaps a more direct way than most of the other tie-ins.
