Anke-Beate Stahl Norse in the Place-nam.es of Barra The Barra group lies off the west coast of Scotland and forms the southernmost extremity of the Outer Hebrides. The islands between Barra Head and the Sound of Barra, hereafter referred to as the Barra group, cover an area approximately 32 km in length and 23 km in width. In addition to Barra and Vatersay, nowadays the only inhabited islands of the group, there stretches to the south a further seven islands, the largest of which are Sandray, Pabbay, Mingulay and Bemeray. A number of islands of differing sizes are scattered to the north-east of Barra, and the number of skerries and rocks varies with the tidal level. Barra's physical appearance is dominated by a chain of hills which cuts through the island from north-east to south-west, with the peaks of Heaval, Hartaval and An Sgala Mor all rising above 330 m. These mountains separate the rocky and indented east coast from the machair plains of the west. The chain of hills is continued in the islands south of Barra. Due to strong winter and spring gales the shore is subject to marine erosion, resulting in a ragged coastline with narrow inlets, caves and natural arches. Archaeological finds suggest that farming was established on Barra by 3000 BC, but as there is no linguistic evidence of a pre-Norse place names stratum the Norse immigration during the ninth century provides the earliest onomastic evidence. The Celtic cross-slab of Kilbar with its Norse ornaments and inscription is the first traceable source of any language spoken on Barra: IEptir porgerdu Steinars dottur es kross sja reistr', IAfter Porgero, Steinar's daughter, is this cross erected'(Close Brooks and Stevenson 1982:43). -

Water Safety Policy in Scotland —A Guide 2 Introduction Scotland is surrounded by coastal water – the North Sea, the Irish Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. In addition, there are also numerous bodies of inland water including rivers, burns and about 25,000 lochs. Being safe around water should therefore be a key priority. However, the management of water safety is a major concern for Scotland. Recent research has found a mixed picture of water safety in Scotland with little uniformity or consistency across the country.1 In response to this research, it was suggested that a framework for a water safety policy be made available to local authorities. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has therefore created this document to assist in the management of water safety. In order to support this document, RoSPA consulted with a number of UK local authorities and organisations to discuss policy and water safety management. Each council was asked questions around their own area’s priorities, objectives and policies. Any policy specific to water safety was then examined and analysed in order to help create a framework based on current practice. It is anticipated that this framework can be localised to each local authority in Scotland which will help provide a strategic and consistent national approach which takes account of geographical areas and issues. The terms and conditions set out at the end of this booklet determine the basis upon which Forth Ports Limited’s facilities and anchorages may be used and Forth Ports Limited’s marine services are provided. The terms and conditions also set out the circumstances under which payments are due to Forth Ports Limited and establish liability for payment of these charges. The charges shall apply for the period from 1st January 2018 to 31st December 2019. Details of other port charges are contained in the published port charges booklets for each port, copies of which are available from Forth Ports Limited, 1 Prince of Wales Dock, Edinburgh EH6 7DX. Port Marine Safety Code-2019 Annual Performance Review Forth and Dundee Ports Authorities Introduction The Forth and Dundee Port Authorities aim to undertake and regulate marine operations so as to safeguard the harbours, rivers, river users, the public and the environment. Forth Ports comply with the requirements of the Port Marine Safety Code when carrying out all marine operations as confirmed by the annual audit conducted by our independent Designated Person. Our compliance to the Port Marine Safety Code was confirmed to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in January 2018 for a further 3 years. The Annual Performance Review is prepared in order that the Forth and Tay Port Authorities can report on the performance of the Authorities to the Board of Forth Ports Limited as required by the Port Marine Safety Code. This report is a summary of the activities over the year and is prepared in addition to the annual report that the Designated Person presents to the Board. The review will report on the main activities of the marine operations under the following headings: 1. Vessel Activity Report 2. Forth and Tay Navigation Service 3. Pilotage 4. Conservancy 5. FIFTY YEARS IN THE NORTH SEA: A PERSONAL JOURNEY PRESENTATION BY TONY CRAVEN WALKER TO SCOTTISH OIL CLUB – EDINBURGH 16 MAY 2019 Ladies and Gentlemen. I am delighted to be here today. As we are in Scotland, the home of whisky, I was tempted to call this talk “Tony Walker – Started 1965 - Still Going Strong”. Then I read about Algy Cluff’s retirement last week described as “The Last Man Standing” so I was tempted to call it “The Last Man Still Standing”. But I decided on FIFTY YEARS IN THE NORTH SEA: A PERSONAL JOURNEY. With around one hour allotted that works out at around one year per minute so I had better get a move on! Actually it has been 54 years since I joined the oil industry but what a journey it has been. One which is not over just yet as far as I am concerned and one which has given me great challenges and great pleasure. Before diving into things I thought it might be fun to mention that Anton Ziolkowski, your President, and I go back way into the 1950’s when we were neighbours living next door to each other as small boys in London. It is curious and always amazing how the world works to find that we are in the same industry and he has invited me to speak today. I will keep to myself some of the pranks that Anton and I got up to as youngsters, “tin-can tommy” and “mud-ball sling” spring to mind, as I certainly don’t want to embarrass your president.
