Read Hair Tutorial Video Transcript 00.00 From one house of isolation, to another Hello! With the 75th anniversary of VE day being upon us unfortunately, all of the events that would have been scheduled to happen 00.10 to celebrate this amazing occasion, of course, have been cancelled. So, in, er, trusty social distancing styling goodness I thought it would be a good time to show you 00.20 quite a - hopefully - simple tutorial for all you long-haired-ladies, or long-haired-men to embrace this very iconic style. 00.30 But first, let's wind back and take a look at the history. [Voiceover] The origin of the victory roll hairstyle is somewhat blurry. Though there is an incredibly romantic theory that claims to shed light on this. 00.40 During World War II, ladies were enrolled into the workforce and after several hair related machinery accidents it became mandatory that hair must be pinned up whilst working. 00.50 While the women were working in factories the men were flying into battle. On completion of a mission, and as a sign of victory fighter pilots would perform an aerobatic manoeuvre 01.00 in the sky, which would cause their exhaust smoke to make a rolling pattern. Similarly to how you might see the red arrows when they perform today. 01.10 It was this that inspired patriotic women to honour their returning soldiers, by adopting the name for this pinned up hairstyle. Which was seen widely across factory workers 01.20 as well as every day fashion and day to day life. Even hollywood starlets, such as Veronica Lake would appear on the big screen with victory rolls in their hair. 01.30 In fact, as a push to promote this new working regulation, within the factories the government actually paid Veronica Lake to chop off her long hair and adopt the victory roll hairstyle. Such was her influence at the time. 01.40 The style could be adopted for both casual and formal occasions and with its versatility, it has remained a classic style, even in today's fashion trends. 01.50 The hairstyle serves as a historical reminder of the strength and determination shown by women during the 1940s. For this tutorial, you are going to need 02.00 heat protection spray some dry shampoo hairspray a hair wand, although hair straighteners will suffice a heat protection glove some sectioning clips 02.10 a pin tail comb, or if you don't have one, a normal comb a back combing brush, or soft bristle brush and some hair grips to match your hair colour. 02.20 To start you are going to lightly spray heat protection spray through the sides back and top of the hair. Massage through with your fingers to make sure it's evenly distributed. 02.30 And then, using your pin tail comb we're going to section the front off on one side of the head from the top of the head down to the middle of one ear. 02.40 [Relaxed music in background] Section this off to the front with one of your clips. And then do the same on the other side. 02.50 From the top of the head down to the middle of the ear. And again, section that off to the front with a clip as well. 03.00 As you'll see, this parting is on the side and that is because the style is going to be asymmetric. [Relaxed music in background] You can leave the back of the hair straight 03.10 although if you want to also create vintage waves start by curling your bottom section around your wand, in a clockwise direction. [Relaxed music in background] 03.20 Do this across the whole of the bottom of the section and then when you get to your next middle section you're going to, instead of going clockwise you're going to go Anti-clockwise 03.30 which will create the vintage wave appearance. [Relaxed music in background] 03.40 Your next section is going to go clockwise, once again and your final section will be anti-clockwise. Here is the finished set of curls. 03.50 You're now done with the back of the head and now we can focus on the front. [Relaxed music in background] 04.00 For the front section, instead of curling down we are going to be wanting the curls to rotate up and over on top of the head to create the roll. 04.10 With your sectioning clip section off a one inch part from the bottom of the head. Don't forget to put on your trusty glove!" 04.20 [Relaxed music in background] And then wrap the hair up and over the wand up towards the top of the head, instead of downwards. 04.30 Hold for no longer than 7 seconds and then release the curl. Take your next one inch section and do the same working methodically, up the head. 04.40 [Relaxed music in background] 05.00 This section's now ready to roll up and over the head. Next, we're going to take some dry shampoo and apply liberally through each section. This will form your anchor for your backcombing so it helps to hold it in place once you're rolling. 05.10 Take your pintail comb and at the top of the head take a one inch section 05.20 hold the hair up vertically and gently tease the hair back down towards the scalp. [Relaxed music in background] 05.30 Continue down the head in one inch sections until you get to the bottom. [Relaxed music in background] 05.40 I like to leave a little section out at the front that I don't backcomb 05.50 that's easier to smooth as you come over. This is now ready to form your roll, but first... we need to smooth the hair over to create a nice sleak appearance. 06.00 Take your backcombing brush, or soft bristle brush and delicately tame those fly-aways. [Relaxed music in background] 06.10 You want to comb quite lightly so that you don't pull the backcombing that you've just put into the hair, out again. [Relaxed music in background] 06.20 Make sure you keep brushing in the direction that the roll will go to help smooth it over. [Relaxed music in background] 06.30 Use a light dusting of hairspray to help to hold those fly- aways in position. [Relaxed music in background] Now, for the fiddly part. 06.40 It's time to create the roll. Hold the hair altogether in one section and using one grip place diagonally across the section against the scalp. 06.50 This will help to create a wholer appearance when you are creating the roll. 07.00 Get one more grip and criss-cross it in the opposite direction to form your final anchor point. Now it's time to create the roll. Flip the hair up towards the top of the head 07.10 and where your hair first meets your scalp you can place your intial anchoring point grip. Slide it in to the head to secure your hair. 07.20 This becomes quite fiddly as you've now essentially got to tuck those ends into the hair, whilst keeping it hollow. [Relaxed music in background] 07.30 On this particular head of hair I can get away with using just two grips but depending on the thickness of your own, you may need more which is totally fine. Believe it or not, that is your first roll done. 07.40 [Relaxed music in background] It's nice and smooth on the outside whilst maintaining that hollow tube appearance on the inside. 07.50 We're now going to do the same on the other side of the head. Curl Dry shampoo And then backcomb. [Relaxed music in background] 08.00 Two more grips will help to anchor this section in place one from the front of the head and one coming from the back making sure that the grips are criss-crossed over 08.10 in order to secure them in place [Relaxed music in background] Next, we're going to do some more smoothing with your backcomb or bristle brush. 08.20 Sweeping the hair over the top of the head and with a light dusting of hairspray to finish off that sheen brush the hair up and over. [Relaxed music in background] 08.30 This might get quite fiddly cos not only have you got to create this second roll but you've got to do it without disturbing that first roll which, as you can see, even I find challenging here. 08.40 Once you have that smooth shape that you're after you can then secure it in place with your first hair grip. [Relaxed music in background] 08.50 Now it's time to tuck in those ends. If you find it easier you can use the end of your bristle brush to tuck them in and manipulate the shape into place. 09.00 [Relaxed music in background] 09.10 After a bit of tweaking you should be able to find the shape that you're after and you can put those final grips into place. Place them on the inside of the roll 09.20 to make sure that they aren't seen from the outside. [Relaxed music in background] And here we have your final VE day look.

  • The 5 Best Hairstyles for Your Boudoir Shoot
The 5 Best hairstyles for your boudoir shoot Let’s face it, hair is important. It wouldn’t be a fast growing 4.8-billion-dollar industry in Australia if us women weren’t fussed, would it? With that in mind, we asked our stylist to give us some advice on the best way to wear our hair for our boudoir shoot and she’s given us The 5 Best Boudoir Hairstyles for you to try out for yourself! Which do you think you would rock at your shoot? 1)Loose curls It’s definitely the all-time favourite hair style of the studio and works for playful, tousled looks as well as refined and classy portraits as well. Although it might take a bit of effort to get those curls in there, we always think it’s worth the effort and works especially well for women who naturally have long straight hair who want to keep it down but want a slightly different look to what they’re used to. It can be equally beneficial for women who have a bit of root growth as the texturing in the hair lessens the effect! 10/10 every time. 2) Coloured hair Similar to its’ skin counterpart, we think coloured hair really makes photos pop, and in a boudoir shoot it can also be a great way to tie together an outfit! It may even add just that splash of colour in an otherwise neutral image which creates real drama. Although coloured hair can require a fair bit of maintenance, the photos last forever, so we figure it’s definitely a worthwhile investment! We also love clients that come in with beautiful colour in their hair because it’s just a little bit different, and the best boudoir shoots are always the ones that were personalised by lingerie, tattoos, character and accessories! 3) Straight and sleek Again, for women who have naturally curly hair, it may be a great opportunity to wear a slightly different look to go with your sexy alter ego.
