À l’annonce par Seyton de la mort de lady Macbeth, Macbeth (acte V, scène 5, lignes 25 à 29) définit la vie ainsi: “Life’s but a walking shadow; a poor player, La vie n’est qu’une ombre qui marche, un pauvre acteur That struts and frets his hour upon the stage, Qui se pavane et s’agite à son heure sur la scène, And then heard no more: it’s a tale Et puis qu’on n’entend plus : «c’est un récit Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Raconté par un idiot, plein de bruit et de fureur, Signifying nothing.” Qui ne signifie rien. » * « Le Bruit et la Fureur », publié en 1929, fait partie avec Sartoris (1927), Absalon ! Absalon !(1936), L’Invaincu (1938), Descend moïse (1942), L’intrus (1948), Requiem pour une nonne (1951), de la « saga de Jefferson » (alias Oxford, Mississippi) qu’il appela le «Livre ». Ces 7 romans ont pour décor le Sud natal de William FAULKNER, dont il immortalisa le comté d’Oxford sous le nom de Yolnapatawpha. * Lire la préface de Maurice Edgar COINDREAU apporte une aide considérable à la lecture du récit. Orientador: Prof. Dr. Eric Mitchell Sabinson CAMPINAS 2015 iii iv v vi RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho é compreender a recepção de Faulkner na França a partir de uma contextualização da literatura francesa nos anos 1930 e da leitura detalhada dos referidos prefácios. O que está em primeiro plano não é uma leitura crítica do autor, e sim uma organização de leituras críticas anteriores. Ao fim do texto, é esboçada uma proposição acerca do apelo específico que Faulkner teve na França. Dos seis livros de Faulkner publicados durante os anos 30, cinco trazem prefácios. Esses textos são de autoria de figuras de grande influência no ambiente literário francês: os tradutores Maurice-Edgar Coindreau e René-Noël Raimbault, o crítico e escritor Valery Larbaud e o escritor, político e jornalista André Malraux. A partir das leituras propostas nesses prefácios, é possível tentar estabelecer uma relação entre o ambiente cultural da França e a obra de William Faulkner. Para estabelecer tal relação, este trabalho se divide em três partes, cada qual correspondendo a um de seus capítulos. -

Massey’s William Faulkner: “Man Working” 1919-1962: A Catalogue of the William Faulkner Collection of the University of Virginia (Charlottesville: Bibliographic Society of the University of Virginia, 1968); and O. B. Emerson’s unpublished doctoral dissertation, “William Faulkner’s Literary Reputation in America” (Vanderbilt University, 1962). The present bibliography begins where Beebe’s latest checklist leaves off, but no precise termination date can be established since publica tion dates for periodicals vary widely, and it has seemed more useful to cover all possible material than to set an arbitrary cutoff date. -

Arnett: The Onset of Southern Modernity in William Faulkner's Sanctuary In popular culture, the name “Popeye” still has resonance. It brings to mind ideas of nostalgia, while still managing to remain contemporary. It is childhood and adulthood all wrapped into one successfully commercialized cartoon. Characterized by his addiction to spinach-in-a-can, Popeye (created by E.C. Segar) is seen by most to be a hero of modern times, heralding a shift in society towards production and consumption. This emphatic focus on modernity and industry can be witnessed in another character with the same distinctive moniker – though this particular individual lacks any of the original’s charm or sincerity. Developed in the midst of the cartoon’s heyday, William Faulkner’s Sanctuary: The Corrected Text (1931) features a Popeye that is emotionless, robotic, and completely lacking in empathy. -

Brolly. Journal of Social Sciences 3 (3) 2020 TEMPLE’S RAPE IN WILLIAM FAULKNER’S “SANCTUARY”: WILFUL VICTIM OR POWERFUL VICTIMIZER? Mourad Romdhani Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Sousse, Tunisia [email protected] Abstract. In this paper, I intend to show that Temple Drake, a well-bred girl who is abducted and raped, does not participate in her own debasement - as many critics argue, since her metamorphosis from innocence to promiscuity is the outcome of patriarchal manipulation. Temple’s physical and psychological abuse and her transformation from “a blank-faced baby” to a “doll-faced slut” reverberate in feminist arguments about masculine “subjectivism” constructed upon female “objectification.” Either with her father and brothers or with Popeye, Temple Drake is depicted as a puppet controlled in a way that reflects her objectification by a masculine-biased culture. Nevertheless, the doll-faced Temple still shows signs of power in her weakest moments, turning into a stereotypical picture of the new woman who wordlessly claims agency and emasculates the patriarch despite repression and sexual exploitation. Keywords: female identity, object, subject, repression, victimized, victimizer, agency The character of Temple Drake in William Faulkner’s Sanctuary (1931) has been a main issue of debate among critics. Oscillating between innocence and culpability, the female character adds to the complexity of the novel and leaves the reader with contradictory impressions of sympathy and incomprehension. Creating Temple’s character upon a controversy, Faulkner ironically mimics a sociocultural system that valorizes yet violates such notions as female virginity and innocence. Edens 1 Amanda Edens 30 March 2012 Dr. Leiter Faulkner Seminar Penetrating or Being Penetrated: The Use of Temple Drake and Drusilla Hawk as Phallic Symbols I. Introduction Gender in William Faulkner’s work has always and continues to inspire debate regarding his position on the topic. Many critics are increasingly aware of the mistreatment women suffer in Faulkner’s novels. The opinions that lean toward the idea that Faulkner is a misogynist writer are prevalent in a lot of critical feminist circles. And, in a world in which Joanna Burden can be decapitated, Temple Drake can be raped with a corncob, Dewey Dell can be sold a scam abortion in exchange for sex, Caddy Compson can be tricked into giving up her child for her own good, and so on and so on, why shouldn’t they? In one critical article, “Victims Unvanquished: Temple Drake and Women Characters in William Faulkner’s Novels,” Abby H.P. Werlock points out that Male hostility towards women is disturbingly persistent throughout William Faulkner’s novels. That Faulkner consciously presented women as victims is demonstrated again and again […] A chronological view of Faulkner’s novels reveals a male hostility toward women which is at first passive and verbal, then increasingly violent and physical (Werlock 3). Although Werlock does point out that “one should not make the mistake of confusing Faulkner with his narrators or the ruthless males who people his fiction” (Werlock 4), she nonetheless Edens 2 presents a troubling timeline of all the abuses women suffer at the hands of men in Faulkner’s fiction, all of which seem to be taken out of context in terms of the entire gender spectrum in Faulkner’s works; that is to say, bad things happen to the men in Faulkner’s novels, as well. -
4.2 Faulkner Exhibition Walkthrough
CONCEPTUAL MASTER P L A N | UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI MUSEUMS 4.2 FAULKNER EXHIBITION WALKTHROUGH The concept behind the organization of the exhibition is to honor the complexity of William Faulkner’s literary works, without either romanticizing or villainizing him as an individual. This is achieved partly by dividing the exhibit into two parts, the first focusing on his literary achievement, and the second on biographical aspects of this prominent Oxford figure. Throughout the exhibition, a range of sources—quotes from Faulkner’s fiction and from the man himself, photographs of him and the places he wrote about, artifacts such as the Faulkner family Bible— enhance the visitors’ experience. The entrance to the exhibit does not assume any knowledge of Faulkner but piques the curiosity of even the most knowledgeable visitor. After a straightforward rendition of the writer’s signature above the entranceway, a quiet gallery space follows, honoring Faulkner’s tremendous capacity for silence, and reveals footage of Oxford during his funeral, as well as a poignant photograph of two men digging his grave. On an opposite wall filled with excerpts from international newspapers, visitors can read about the world’s responses to the writer’s death. Since an introduction to the work is a memorial to the man, the next section of the exhibit focuses on Faulkner’s brilliant and prolific literary achievement and Faulkner Exhibition Plan the tools he employed to produce this body of work. Freestanding exhibit panels in the center of the naturally illuminated initial gallery space introduce the main themes to the visitor. Panels on surrounding gallery walls present a list of his books and stories.
