Computers are already more capable than humans at some tasks,1 but are not regarded as truly intelligent or able to think. Yet since the early days of computing, humans have contemplated the possibility of intelligent machines—those which reach some level of sentience.2 Intelligent machines could result from highly active and rapidly advancing fields of research, such as attempts to emulate the human brain, or to develop generalized artificial intelligence (AGI). Cars drifting up and down the main street. The vehicles date from 1987. There's a billboard advertising the movie The Witches of Eastwick. We move closer: 2 EXT. BARKER STREET - CONTINUOUS 2 This is San Junipero's main drag. Along the sidewalk we follow YORKIE, a slightly awkward woman in her early 20s, dressed so as not to stand out. -

[email protected] [email protected] This is a 1 semester-hour course in which students take part in a combination of movie screenings, Philosophy Club discussions, and philosophy department talks. The course requirements are attendance and participation at any eight events over the course of the semester, and also a posting to the course ICON discussion board for each of those eight attended events. The course is for a letter grade, though of course students can opt to take the course P/NP. The theme for spring will be aligned with the UI theme semester – Our Lives Online – and will focus on social issues surrounding technology and the internet and will include Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner, Ex Machina, Minority Report, The Train, Walkabout, Quest for Fire, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. The movie screening will be on technology and internet-related issues, and the philosophy club meetings will feature episodes of the Netflix show, Black Mirror. The movies will be shown on Tuesday evenings at 6:30pm on the following dates in the Franklin Miller Screening Room (AJB 105) – Jan 24, Feb 7, Feb 21, Mar 7, Mar 21, Apr 4, Apr 18, May 2 – and they are also referenced in the schedule below. The ICON discussion board for each event will open within a day of the event, and the posts will be due six days later – one week after the event itself – at which time the board will close. -

Intercom – Sociedade Brasileira de Estudos Interdisciplinares da Comunicação 40º Congresso Brasileiro de Ciências da Comunicação – Curitiba - PR – 04 a 09/09/2017 A construção de lacunas no seriado Black Mirror como estruturas de narrativa complexa1 Vanessa Guimarães do NASCIMENTO2 Alexandre Tadeu dos SANTOS3 Universidade Federal de Goiás, Goiânia, GO Resumo O presente trabalho objetiva identificar as características de narrativas complexas presentes no episódio San Junipero da obra de ficção seriada Black Mirror, à luz do entendimento proposto por Mittell (2012;2015), bem como observar de que maneira lacunas são construídas no universo diegético para que sejam preenchidas pelos espectadores, a partir de uma cultura participativa, concebida por Jenkins (2009). Para qualificar as lacunas no episódio, será utilizado o conceito de códigos hermenêuticos cunhado por Barthes (1992). Ao final, será feita uma análise, de acordo com a abordagem teórica dos conceitos apresentados, para demonstrar os aspectos de complexidade narrativa encontrados na estrutura seriada episódica em estudo. Palavras-chave: Narrativas complexas; Cultura participativa; Ficção seriada. 1 Introdução A presença de narrativas complexas na televisão contemporânea é uma característica que vem se intensificando nas séries de TV. Nos Estados Unidos há um número extenso de produções nesse estilo. É o que podemos observar em Twin Peaks (1990), Lost (2004), 24 Horas (2001), onde há uma variedade nas formas de narrar, as quais geram margem para uma fruição profusa, a depender do engajamento do espectador. Em diversas outras produções audiovisuais, os traços de complexidade narrativa também vem se acentuando, sendo interessante notar que, esses produtos tem tido representações híbridas, mesclando-se tanto em obras de ficção seriadas contínuas como em narrativas episódicas unitárias, mostrando, assim a pluralidade das narrativas complexas. -

Philosophy Today Volume 65, Issue 3 (Summer 2021): 523–547 DOI: 10.5840/philtoday2021517406 Black Mirrors: Reflecting (on) Hypermimesis NIDESH LAWTOO Abstract: Reflections on mimesis have tended to be restricted to aesthetic fictions in the past century; yet the proliferation of new digital technologies in the present century is currently generating virtual simulations that increasingly blur the line between aes- thetic representations and embodied realities. Building on a recent mimetic turn, or re-turn of mimesis in critical theory, this paper focuses on the British science fiction television series, Black Mirror (2011–2018) to reflect critically on the hypermimetic impact of new digital technologies on the formation and transformation of subjectivity. Key words: mimesis, Black Mirror, simulation, science fiction, hypermimesis, AI, posthuman he connection between mirrors and mimesis has been known since the classical age and is thus not original, but new reflections are now appearing on black mirrors characteristic of the digital age. Since PlatoT first introduced the concept ofmimēsis in book 10 of the Republic, mir- rors have been used to highlight the power of art to represent reality, generating false copies or simulacra that a metaphysical tradition has tended to dismiss as illusory shadows, or phantoms, of a true, ideal and transcendental world. PRODUCTION BRIEF “I am Loki, and I am burdened with glorious purpose.” —Loki arvel Studios’ “Loki,” an original live-action series created exclusively for Disney+, features the mercurial God of Mischief as he steps out of his brother’s shadow. The series, described as a crime-thriller meets epic-adventure, takes place after the events Mof “Avengers: Endgame.” “‘Loki’ is intriguingly different with a bold creative swing,” says Kevin Feige, President, Marvel Studios and Chief Creative Officer, Marvel. “This series breaks new ground for the Marvel Cinematic Universe before it, and lays the groundwork for things to come.” The starting point of the series is the moment in “Avengers: Endgame” when the 2012 Loki takes the Tesseract—from there Loki lands in the hands of the Time Variance Authority (TVA), which is outside of the timeline, concurrent to the current day Marvel Cinematic Universe. In his cross-timeline journey, Loki finds himself a fish out of water as he tries to navigate—and manipulate—his way through the bureaucratic nightmare that is the Time Variance Authority and its by-the-numbers mentality. This is Loki as you have never seen him. Stripped of his self- proclaimed majesty but with his ego still intact, Loki faces consequences he never thought could happen to such a supreme being as himself. In that, there is a lot of humor as he is taken down a few pegs and struggles to find his footing in the unforgiving bureaucracy of the Time Variance Authority. As the series progresses, we see different sides of Loki as he is drawn into helping to solve a serious crime with an agent 1 of the TVA, Mobius, who needs his “unique Loki perspective” to locate the culprits and mend the timeline. -

Marta Lopera-Marmol (Department of Communication,) Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Spain Manel Jiménez-Morales (Department of Communication,) Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Spain Abstract This article studies through a hermeneutical and conceptual analysis the representation of our media focused and technological society in the anthological, auto conclusive and avant-garde British-American sci-fi television series, Black Mirror (Channel 4 and Netflix, 2011-) created by Charlie Brooker. This series was chosen for its dystopian perspective of the Information Communication Technologies (ICT’s), its groundbreaking aesthetics, narrative and themed-based forms that have brought into life once again, postmodern theories, specifically, those of Jean Baudrillard. Taking into account our current media centric society, these theories help us to understand the new diverse realities and phenomena we face as an audience. Firstly there is support from an audience that finds comparable standards of quality that were once only present in cinema. Secondly, there is an increased praise from critics recognizing the important narrative and artistic values in many titles, categorizing them as the ‘third golden age’ or ‘drama age’. Thirdly, television series have facilitated an important change in the exhibition and consumption, which has been shaped by new phenomena such as fandom and binge-watching.
