    ANZAMEMS 2017 abstracts Catherine Abou-Nemeh Victoria University of Wellington “Opening the King’s Body: Autopsy and Anatomy in Early Modern Paris” On 1 September 1715, King Louis XIV of France died in his bed in Versailles. The next day several physicians, anatomists, and attendees assembled in the palace to carry out a post-mortem examination of the deceased monarch. In addition to the Dean of the Paris Faculty of Medicine Jean- Baptiste Doye, Guy Fagon (the king’s head physician) and Georges Mareschal (the king’s first- surgeon) led the dissection. This paper situates Louis’ autopsy in the context of late seventeenth and early eighteenth century anatomical practices in Paris. In so doing, I will assess the meaning and status of autopsy, and discuss its relation to royal power and anatomical knowledge. Anya Adair Yale University “The Post-Mortem Mobility of Dead Text: Mouvance and the Early English Legal Preface.” The introduction to a medieval law code does important rhetorical work: among other things, it must convince its audience of the justice of the laws that follow. For authority on this matter, the legal preface (like so many literary texts) often relies on the invocation of an imagined past, founding its claim on past codes, past kings, and a shared sense of stable legal history. Yet the law code itself moves through time in a very different way: in strictly legal terms, the most recent code must take precedence, overriding and erasing past laws. Laws look forward, not back. This paper explores some of the consequences of the temporal tension between prologue and laws, and traces its effects into the ways that early medieval law codes were disseminated and preserved in the manuscript record.

A general at the end of the Chinese Ming Dynasty, he was a prominent leader of the movement opposing the Manchu Qing Dynasty, and in recovering Taiwan from Dutch colonial occupation in 1661. Honored as a hero in Japan, China, and Taiwan, he has been dramatized in many plays in various theatre forms in Japan (since about 1700), China (since 1906), and Taiwan (since the 1920s).

It descends from the heavens in a variety of forms - as dew or hail, to mention just the extremes. And then, of course, there is the all-encompassing water which we call the sea, and which reminds us of the beginning of all things. The English once labelled the Netherlands across the North Sea ‘this indigested vomit of the sea’. But the Dutch went to work on that vomit, systematically and stubbornly: ‘... their tireless hands manufactured this land, / drained it and trained it and planed it and planned’ (James Brockway). As God's subcontractors they gradually became experts in living apart together. Look carefully at the first photo. The water has struck again. We're talking 1926. Gelderland. The small, stocky woman visiting the stricken province is Queen Wilhelmina. Without turning a hair she allows herself to be carried over the waters.

De Friesche Elfstedentocht Ik ga mijn spreekbeurt houden over een schaatstocht in Friesland namelijk de Friesche Elfstedentocht. Voordat de tocht kan beginnen moet het eerst hard vriezen want het ijs moet overal 15 centimeter dik zijn.Als langs de hele route het ijs 15 centimeter dik is wordt er een vergadering gehouden die bepaalt of de elfstedentocht door kan gaan of niet. Dat is altijd heel spannend de kranten staan er vol van en op het journaal wordt er ook over gepraat iedereen is er heel erg mee bezig dit noemt men de elfstedenkoorts. De Elfstedentocht gaat langs elf Friese steden nl.: Leeuwarden, Sneek, IJIst, Sloten, Stavoren, Hindelopen, Workum,Bolsward, Harlingen, Franeker, Dokkum. De Tocht is 200 kilometer lang en moet in een dag worden geschaatst. De elfstedentocht is verdeeld in wedstrijdrijders (deze doen mee aan de wedstrijd) en toerrijders (deze doen mee voor hun eigen plezier). 2. De Geschiedenis van de Elfstedentocht. In 1845 stond er in de krant dat 3 Friese mannen in één dag 11 steden afgeschaatst. Ze deden er 14 1/2 uur over. In de winter van 1890-91 trokken honderden friezen over het ijs. Ze probeerden steeds sneller te rijden. De recordtijd was toen 12 uur en 55 minuten. Als bewijs dat ze de hele route hadden gereden namen ze briefjes mee met daarop handtekeningen van de café's en restaurants langs de route. Op 2 januari 1909 werd de eerste echte elfstedentocht gehouden er deden 23 rijders aan mee. De mensen schaatsten toen nog op 'houtjes', ze worden ook wel friese doorlopers genoemde.

The most famous and the oldest of the charity’s awards is the PDSA Dickin Medal. It acknowledges outstanding acts of bravery displayed by animals serving with the Armed Forces or Civil Defence units in any theatre of war, worldwide. The Medal is recognised as the animals’ Victoria Cross and is the highest British honour for animal bravery in military conflicts. The medal was instituted in 1943 Maria Dickin. Maria Dickin CBE PDSA owes its foundation to the vision of one woman - Maria Elisabeth Dickin - and her determination to raise the status of animals, and the standard of their care, in society. During the First World War, Maria Dickin CBE worked to improve the dreadful state of animal health in the Whitechapel area of London. She wanted to open a clinic where East Enders living in poverty could receive free treatment for their sick and injured animals. Left: Despite the scepticism of the Establishment, Maria Dickin opened her free 'dispensary' in a Whitechapel basement on Saturday 17th November 1917. It was an immediate success and she was soon forced to find larger premises. Photo PDSA. Within six years this extraordinary woman had designed and equipped her first horse-drawn clinic and soon a fleet of mobile dispensaries was established. PDSA vehicles soon became a comforting and familiar sight throughout the country. With success came increased attention from her critics at the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the Ministry of Agrigulture.
