Westminster Abbey A SERVICE OF EVENING PRAYER IN THE PRESENCE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE BENEDICT XVI AND HIS GRACE THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY Friday 17 September 2010 6.15 pm THE COLLEGIATE CHURCH OF ST PETER IN WESTMINSTER Westminster Abbey’s recorded history can be traced back well over a thousand years. Dunstan, Bishop of London, brought a community of Benedictine monks here around 960 AD and a century later King Edward established his palace nearby and extended his patronage to the neighbouring monastery. He built for it a great stone church in the Romanesque style which was consecrated on 28 December 1065. The Abbey was dedicated to St Peter, and the story that the Apostle himself consecrated the church is a tradition of eleventh-century origin. King Edward died in January 1066 and was buried in front of the new high altar. When Duke William of Normandy (William I) arrived in London after his victory at the Battle of Hastings he chose to be crowned in Westminster Abbey, on Christmas Day 1066. The Abbey has been the coronation church ever since. The Benedictine monastery flourished owing to a combination of royal patronage, extensive estates, and the presence of the shrine of St Edward the Confessor (King Edward had been canonised in 1161). Westminster’s prestige and influence among English religious houses was further enhanced in 1222 when papal judges confirmed that the monastery was exempt from English ecclesiastical jurisdiction and answerable direct to the Pope. The present Gothic church was begun by King Henry III in 1245. By October 1269 the eastern portion, including the Quire, had been completed and the remains of St Edward were translated to a new shrine east of the High Altar.

  • The Common Declaration by Pope John Paul II and the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Robert Runcie
The Common Declaration by Pope John Paul II and the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Robert Runcie October 2, 1989 After worshipping together in the Basilica of Saint Peter and in the Church of Saint Gregory, from where Saint Augustine of Canterbury was sent by Saint Gregory the Great to England, Pope John Paul II, Bishop of Rome, and His Grace Robert Runcie, Archbishop of Canterbury, now meet again to pray together in order to give fresh impetus to the reconciling mission of God’s people in a divided and broken world, and to review the obstacles which still impede closer communion between the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion. Our joint pilgrimage to the Church of Saint Gregory, with its historic association with Saint Augustine’s mission to baptize England, reminds us that the purpose of the Church is nothing other than the evangelization of all peoples, nations and cultures, We give thanks together for the readiness and openness to receive the Gospel that is especially evident in the developing world, where young Christian communities joyfully embrace the faith of Jesus Christ and vigorously express a costly witness to the Gospel of the Kingdom in sacrificial living. The word of God is received, “not as the word of man, but as what it really is, the word of God” (1 Thess 2:13). As we enter the last decade of the second millennium of the birth of Jesus Christ, we pray together for a new evangelization throughout the world, not least in the continent of Saint Gregory and Saint Augustine where the progressive secularization of society erodes the language of faith and where materialism demeans the spiritual nature of humankind.

Title The church and war : contemporary anglican reflections on war and morality Sub Title Author 原田, 健二朗(Harata, Kenjiro) Publisher Global Center of Excellence Center of Governance for Civil Society, Keio University Publication year 2012 Jtitle Journal of political science and sociology No.17 (2012. 10) ,p.1- 21 Abstract This paper explores the Church of England's recent views in the area of war and defence, drawing attention to its just war thinking recently revived by several theologians and churchmen. As a national established church, the Church of England has developed its own approach to modern warfare to meet the political circumstances of the day, on the one hand, and to place strong moral limits on the use of force, on the other. The paper attempts to review several uses of just war theory within Anglicanism in the contexts of the Second World War, nuclear deterrence in the Cold War, humanitarian intervention, the 'war on terrorism' and the Iraq War. On Iraq's case, the paper reflects on arguments by Dr Rowan Williams, the current Archbishop of Canterbury, and Richard Harries, the former Bishop of Oxford and the Church's leading expert on just war theory, who both criticised the war in Iraq as unjust. Through this, I ask how the Church's changing attitude towards warfare highlights another unsettled question, namely the relationship between church and state in Britain, and, given the Church's moral concern, whether it benefits from being an Established church. Living the Gospel Now Conference Chapter 5: Kale King, at Hillfield Friary, 1981. Left to TSSF Guardian 1980-81 right: Dee Dobson; Br. Robert Hugh; Kale King; Archbishop Robert Runcie In 1980, Kale King, Dee Dobson, Helen Webb, Deane Kennedy, and Marie Webner were each nominated for Guardian of the Order—King won with Dobson and Webb coming in very close, unlike John Scott’s former landslide elections. For Chapter: Dee Dobson and Marie Webner continued with Keith Ackerman, Dorothy Nakatsuji, Jane Ellen Traugott, Lee Malloy, and George Metcalf. Peter Funk withdrew from all nominations. Biography (This is part of a series of essays entitled “My Franciscan Journey” done by members of the Land of Sky Fellowship in 1993) While in seminary–though having met no members of a religious community–I was being drawn to find an Order with which I could associate in some fashion. I was looking for “Anglican” and “American,” but I was also attracted to the kind of itinerancy one finds in the life of Francis of Assisi. The stability of a monastery life was not really interesting. At the time the Order of the Poor Brethren of St. Francis, the Greyfriars, was very much rooted in monastic life at the Monastery of Little Portion, Long Island. I had inquired about some kind of association, but there was nothing attractive. Just as my class was leaving seminary an underclassman told me about an English order, the Society of St. Francis. In time I found their address, wrote to the then–Minister, Brother Charles. He replied that since there were no SSF friars in North America, there was no possibility for an SSF Third Order.

  • Mark 1 Vv 9-15 'The Time Is Fulfilled the Kingdom of God Has Come Near'
Rights or Rites – in the Church? Mark 1 vv 9-15 ‘The time is fulfilled the Kingdom of God has come near’ Mark 1 v 15 It will not have escaped your attention that the Bishops of the Church of England have issued a collective letter – a Pastoral Letter ‘Who is my neighbour? A letter from the House of Bishops to the people and Parishes of the Church of England for the General Election 2015’ I doubt whether many of you have read the full 52 page epistle but predicatably the politicains and the press claim to have and comments have included ‘disengenous, nakeldly partisan, and naïve. It is true that the Church is resurfacing as an ebullient political lobby. Since the appointment of Justin Welby as Archbishop of Canterbury there has been a campaign against pay-day lending, a warning over food banks, and notably a book of essays edited by the Archbishop of York, that apparently decried everythinhg from advertising to inequality. This of course stands in a modern tradition of the Church and State that can be traced back to William Temple’s ‘Christianity and Social Order’ published during the Second World War in 1 1942 looking ahead even then to the post war settlement. Again when Robert Runcie was Archbsihop in 1983 we had the ‘Church and the Bomb’ which was suggestive of unilateral disarmament and famously under Robert Runcie once more ‘Faith in the City’ which was seen to have challenged Thatcherism’s effect on the inner cities. The response to most of these has been fairly uniform putting politicians into ‘slightly alarmed’ mode because at the end of the day practising Anglicans in the United Kingdom are in excess of one million, not to say all the nominal ones who might be influenced by their theorectical church leaders.
