It won three Tony Awards, ran 765 performances in its original Broadway run, spawned countless productions worldwide, a Broadway revival in 2002 (which won another Tony for best revival), a junior version for school performances, and a major Disney motion picture. Now 28 years later Sondheim and Lapine, with many of the original cast, reunite at BAM on June 21 for a discussion and performance of their extraordinary collaboration. The reunion will be part retrospective; part moderated panel with Sondheim, Lapine, and the cast; and part performance, with cast members performing songs from the show. It will delve into the genesis and creative process of its award-winning score and book, casting for the Broadway production, and the road that led to the New York premiere in 1987. In addition to hearing songs performed by their original interpreters, the audience will have the rare opportunity to witness a meeting of these Broadway legends, and to learn from the cast about their experiences with the production, how the success of Into the Woods affected them, and their work today.

As a high school student back in the late 90’s, I was first introduced to a piece of theatre that would become one of my favorite and most beloved musicals. Watching closely as Bernadette Peters, Chip Zien, Robert Westenberg, and Joanna Gleason took to the stage bringing a magical fairy tale to life, I was captivated by not only their stellar performances, but by the intricacies of Sondheim’s music and by the dark reality of wishes fulfilled. The mesmerizing way that this piece weaves the familiar stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Cinderella together through a story connected by a childless Baker and his Wife has something for everyone to identify with. This play spoke to me as an angsty teenager with hopes and ambitions, but the story is even more resonant for me as an adult who has seen some of her wishes fulfilled and has learned that although a “fairy tale ending” is what we all hope for, in reality- a sense of longing and the challenge of adapting to unexpected change is inevitable.

Since its founding in 1952, MTI has been responsible for supplying scripts and musical materials to theatres worldwide and for protecting the rights and legacy of the authors whom it represents. It has been a driving force in cultivating new work and in extending the production life of some of the classics: Guys and Dolls, West Side Story, Fiddler On The Roof, Les Misérables, Annie, Of Thee I Sing, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Damn Yankees, The Music Man, Evita, and the complete musical theatre works of composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim, among others. Apart from the major Broadway and Off- Broadway shows, MTI is proud to represent youth shows, revues and musicals which began life in regional theatres and have since become worthy additions to the musical theatre canon. MTI shows have been performed by 30,000 amateur and professional theatrical organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada, and in over 60 countries around the world. Whether it’s at a high school in Kansas, by an all-female troupe in Japan or the first production of West Side Story ever staged in Estonia, productions of MTI musicals involve over 10 million people each year. Although we value all our clients, the twelve thousand high schools who perform our shows are of particular importance, for it is at these schools that music and drama educators work to keep theatre alive in their community.

Shields ii ABSTRACT Cynthia Baron, Advisor While the work of Stephen Sondheim has been studied by scholars, frequently with examinations of his musical and dramatic influences, his filmic influences have remained relatively overlooked. I want to consider the many ways in which Sondheim’s work in musical theatre and in film has been influenced by his admiration for and interest in cinema. First, I want to look at the work Sondheim did in film, from script writing to composing songs for film scores, helped expand his knowledge and appreciation of film. Second, I want to examine how the work of Sondheim and his collaborators furthered the larger aesthetic movement in which filmic techniques became implemented in the structure, staging, and choreography of American musical theatre. Next, I want to consider how Sondheim’s interest in certain types of films and industry figures aligns with his collaborations on musicals. Finally, I then analyze the influence film composers such as Bernard Herrmann had on Sondheim’s scores. After studying Sondheim’s film experiences, links between staging practices in Hollywood and on Broadway, shared aesthetic choices in certain film and musical theatre narratives, and connections between aesthetic practices in Sondheim’s compositions and those of significant Hollywood film composers, I determined that there are a wide range of connections between mainstream film and Sondheim’s work in musical theatre.

Rubino, Candidate for the Master of Arts Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2012 ABSTRACT This thesis is a history of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Sunday in the Park with George (1984), which was inspired by Georges Seurat’s masterpiece: Un dimanche à la Grande Jatte (1886). By first examining the lives and careers of Seurat and Sondheim, a foundation is established to take a deeper look into the creation of this musical. It becomes clear how the lives of these two men intertwined to form a groundbreaking show. From its moment of conception to its closing night on Broadway, the history of the musical theatre piece is chronicled in detail. Through the recollections of the show’s creators, stars, and critics, the ups and downs of this journey are revealed. Four other productions of this show are explored, all of which opened after the completion of the original Broadway run. These versions were put on at different times in various locations and take on unconventional styles, but each one proves that Sunday in the Park with George remains a Sondheim classic that has the power to change lives as it did history.

The stories of Cinderella, Little Red, Jack (of beanstalk fame) and Rapunzel are brought together, along with two original characters: The Baker and His Wife, in a narrative that explores what happens after happily ever after. In Act I the characters pursue, and see the wishes fulfilled that their traditional tales are built around. The Baker and His Wife bring all the characters from these different stories together as they move in and out of the traditional fairytales interfering with the traditional characters pursuit of their desires as they pursue their own wish, a child.
