A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome and thank you for attending our production of "The Mystery of Edwin Drood". "Drood" is the musical version of Charles Dickens' last novel of the same name, which he never fmished. You are correct in assuming by the title that there is indeed a mystery. The problem is that Dickens died before he finished it, leaving several questions unanswered. That is where you, the audience, come into play (pun intended).

As you've probably already guessed, this is not going to be a typical West Valley show, it is going to be more like a naughty melodrama of the 1800's. Just like the melodramas of old, we expect you to do your part and join in at the appropriate moment - hiss, cheer, sing and anything else the actors may ask you to do. We apologize ahead of time if your the type of patron that likes to sit like a potato( e) and be entertained, you won't have the most fun. Think of this show as Nintendo-like theatre - the more you play with it the more fun you'll have.

I wish to thank the producers, staff, actors and everyone working on this show, for supporting all efforts to allow lesser known shows to be produced, and for making one "jolly good time".

Yours, Kevin Cormier Director

Bob has performed with WVLO since 1980 where he debuted as Curly in "Oklahoma". Over the last twelve years he has had principle roles in "The Pajama Game", "Perfectly Frank", "Girl Crazy" and as Mayor Smith in "The Music Man". In 1984 he appeared as Sancho in "Man Of La Mancha" winning Best Supporting Actor for that season. Bob regularly performs with Gilbert and Sullivan most recently in "Pirates Of Penzance". In his spare time away from the theatre, Bob pursues his private law practice in San Jose. Maybe the Murderer will retain his services, or just maybe the attorney did it.

LES DALE - Reverend Crisparkle, Cedric Moncrieffe - Les is no stranger to the theatre, both on stage, the creation of set designs and scenic drops. Les has performed in over 30 shows with WVLO and SCC, and SJCLO. You'll remember him most recently as The Padre in "Man Of La Mancha" and he was the Rabbi in "Fiddler On The Roof" - Is this a man of the CLOTH??? He has had non clergy roles, and some of his favorites shows are "", "", "Show Boat", "Sugar" and "Annie" to name a few. Les started set design about 5 years ago, his skillful and creative talents has provided WVLO with some beautiful sets and special props. His future goals are to provide his services for set design to other community theatres.

CHRISTY EKBLOM - Edwin Drood, Alice Nutting - This is Christy's 5th show with WVLO. Most recently as a prisoner in "Man Of La Mancha", and the Giant and Granny in "Into The Woods", she performed in "Fiddler On The Roof", and in the "Sound Of Music". She has a family of performers, a son in community theatre, and with her husband they performed in a rock band 'B.B. Wolfe' for 7 years. Married, three children, works full time and has time to do a show - What Time Management. DOUGLAS HAGDOHL - Bazzard, Phillip Bax - Doug returns ON stage, with WVLO, he last appeared in "". But Doug is no stranger to our theatre, last season he appeared in the motion picture segment of "Singing In The Rain". Doug has been a director, producer, stage manager, or performer for many theatrical companies on the west coast, such as SJCLO, SDG and many more. He has directed productions that include "Carousel", "The Sound Of Music", "The Unsinkable Molly Brown", "Camelot", "Mame", "The Music Man" to name a few. He has also performed in "1776", "Oklahoma", "Pirates Of Penzance", "Guys And Dolls", and "Camelot" which he received the award for Best Leading Actor in 1988 from SVCT.

MATTHEW HARVEY - Neville Landless, Victor Grinstead - This is Matthew's lucky seventh show with WVLO. You'll remember him in "Man Of La Mancha", "The Merry Widow", "Oklahoma", "The Music Man", "Fiddler On The Roof", and his personal favorite as Jack in "Into The Woods". We have watched Matthew grow up before our eyes, he is now in his first year of college, attending the University of Santa Clara. He is very excited to be able to playa truly 'psychotic' character, since he has been so straight laced all his life (a real good boy), but ask anyone who knows him, this part fits .

PAMELA NUTTO-HEMKER - Rosa Bud, Deirdre Peregrine - Our regular theatre goers will remember Pamela, she was our 1991 Errma Award winner for her role as Laurie in "Oklahoma", ~ she also played Cinderella in "Into The Woods", and she was the understudy for Marian in "The Music Man". She recently played her role as Laurie in "Oklahoma" in the theatre under the stars in Gilroy, with real live chickens to boot. She has also played in "Guys & Dolls" with Palo Alto Players. Pamela is a communications teacher at West Valley/Mission College. In her spare time, Pamela and her husband David are trying to build a house that she designed. BRAD HIGHTDUDIS - James Throttle Stage Manager, Barkeep, - This marks Brad's third performance with WVLO. He played the Prince's Steward in "Into The Woods" and Mordcha in "Fiddler On The Roof". He has also performed in "Working Joe" and was the assistant director for "Godspell". His future goals are to learn more about the technical side of theatre, the behind the scenes functions, while still satisfying his desire to act. As a computer aided service engineer maybe we will see more computerized special effects in the future.

SCOTT KAUFMAN - Deputy, Master Nick Cricker - This is Scott's debut with WVLO, although no stranger to the stage. He has performed in "", "Your A Good Man Charlie Brown", "The Wizard Of OZ", "Bye Bye Birdie" and "Chess" with various theatre groups in the Bay Area. Currently he is a sophomore at Cupertino High and aspires to attend NYU and pursue a career on Broadway. He would like to thank his family for all their support.

TIMOTHY MATHEWS - Durdles, Nick Cricker - He began in '" theatre in 1983 on a whim and has been hooked ever since. He has performed in South Carolina, Alabama and San Jose. Her future goal is to one day perform on stage with her daughter - a family affair.

JAY WATSON - William Cartwright, Chairman, Mayor Sapsea, - Jay was nominated for an Errma Award as Best Supporting Actor, for his performance of Sancho in last season's "Man of La Mancha". Jay has also played principle roles in "Oklahoma", "Annie Get Your Gun", "Guys & Dolls", "Oliver", and "King And I" with various theatre's. Jay has been bitten by the theatre bug, and hopes to expand his talents and career in theatre. BRAD HANDSHV - Choreography - When WVLO's 1992-93 season was in the planning stages, Brad was one of the strongest proponents of doing "Drood". PRODUCTIONS NEVER PRESENTED BY OUR ASSOCIATION BEFORE

"THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD" - Story, Book & Lyrics by RUPERT HOLMES. DROOD is a Tony award-winning show. This "MUSICAL MYSTERY" is based on an unfinished novel by Charles Dickens. It is performed as if it were being played by an acting company of London's Music Hall Royale in 1873. As the show progresses, Drood vanishes. His torn coat is found by the river, and there is much speculation as to his fate. The mystery is about to be revealed when the play stops abruptly. This is where Charles Dickens laid down his pen forever. The audience now participates by determining the ending and the show continues. Performances: Nov/Dec '92

"NUNSENSE" - Book, Music & Lyrics by DAN GOGGIN NUNSENSE is a rollicking musical comedy. It had its start Off-Broadway and has since played throughout the country. It won four Outer Circle Critics Awards in 1986, including Best Off-Broadway Musical. The story is about the efforts of 5 nuns of The Order of The Little Sisters of Hoboken to raise money to bury the remaining four of 52 Nuns who died eating vichyssoise prepared by the convent chef. The five fund-raising Nuns in the show were spared the fate of the other Sisters because they were playing Bingo that night at another Parish! The hilarious situations the Nuns get into makes for a very enjoyable evening. Performances: Mar/Apr '93

"THE KING & I" - Music By Richard Rodgers, Book & Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, Based on Margaret Landon's "Anna & The King of Siam". THE KING & I, a splendid excursion into the exotic pageantry of the Orient, holds unflagging fascination for audiences everywhere. Winner of numerous awards, including the coveted Tony for Best Musical of the Year, it tells the story of a noble man's struggle to change himself and his people, and of the Western schoolteacher who inspires him. She is the governess and teacher to King Mongkut's many children, has frequent clashes with the autocratic, semi-barbaric ruler, but eventually - and discreetly- comes to love him. Performances: Jun/Jul '93
