The destruction of coastal forests caused by R. undulata infection has been mainly associated with bonfires at camping sites. However, Rhizina root rot was observed in the western coastal forests without fire. It was hypothesized that Rhizina root rot in this area might be closely related to the soil salinity, which can facilitate the growth and survival of R. undulata. So, the variation in sodium chloride (NaCl) resistance among isolates of Rhizina undulata was compared using liquid media containing different concentrations of NaCl ranging from 0 mM to 300 mM. Our results showed that, albeit of no growth at a higher concentration of NaCl (300 mM), most of R. undulata isolates were capable of germinating and grew at up to 100 mM, indicating that NaCl resistance varies among R. undulata isolates. It was further found that isolates from coastal areas seemed to be more tolerant to NaCl than those further away the coast. We demonstrated that R. undulata could be possible to survive in coastal areas, but was lower NaCl tolerance than other fungi. It was thus hypothesized that levels of salinity might have an ef- fect on the growth, spore germination, and survival of R. un- dulata, and thus, its potential impact was determined in vitro. Taxonomy Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirbel) Franco is generally called Douglas-fir (so spelled to maintain its distinction from true firs, the genus Abies). Pseudotsuga Carrière is in the kingdom Plantae, division Pinophyta (traditionally Coniferophyta), class Pinopsida, order Pinales (conifers), and family Pinaceae. The genus Pseudotsuga is most closely related to Larix (larches), as indicated in particular by cone morphology and nuclear, mitochondrial and chloroplast DNA phylogenies (Silen 1978; Wang et al. 2000); both genera also have non-saccate pollen (Owens et al. 1981, 1994). Based on a molecular clock analysis, Larix and Pseudotsuga are estimated to have diverged more than 65 million years ago in the Late Cretaceous to Paleocene (Wang et al. 2000). The earliest known fossil of Pseudotsuga dates from 32 Mya in the Early Oligocene (Schorn and Thompson 1998). Pseudostuga is generally considered to comprise two species native to North America, the widespread Pseudostuga menziesii and the southwestern California endemic P. macrocarpa (Vasey) Mayr (bigcone Douglas-fir), and in eastern Asia comprises three or fewer endemic species in China (Fu et al. 1999) and another in Japan. First investigated option was the prevention of Heterobasidion spp. by establishing mixed coniferous-deciduous tree plantations, which would allow thinning delay and thus the absence of stumps that are main infection courts for the pathogen. Results showed that full prevention can be achieved, and that mixed stands also produced a better yield than pure plantations. During the second experiment it was demonstrated that the treatment of stumps with biological (Rotstop) and chemical (urea) control agents can also effectively prevent the Heterobasidion infections, and that the biological control is more environmentally friendly than the chemical. Furthermore, the prevention of loss in forest areas that already were heavily infested by Heterobasidion spp. was investigated. It was shown that in such areas the pathogen persists in root systems of killed trees for decades and readily attacks replanted deciduous trees, e.g. birch. Despite that, the results indicated clearly that the loss could be minimised by replanting the infested sites with more resistant tree species.

A ceremony is then held during which the male family members pay respect to their deceased ancestors up to the fourth generation by making three full bows. Family members also visit the graves of their deceased ancestors. On this holiday, after cutting the grass from around the grave, they make a simple offering and then bow three times. In addition to paying respect to the deceased, each family member is expected to make two formal bows to his or her elders. According to custom, the elders then give the person a gift of money, particularly if the person is a child. Special foods are prepared for this holiday. In particular, rice-cake soup is typically served instead ofrice. For this reason, the question 'How many bowls of rice-cake soup have you eaten?' is sometimes used to ask one's age. In North Korea and China, mandu (dumpling) soup is often eaten instead.

The image of white egrets standing in terraced rice fields is a provincial icon. As Korea’s agricul- tural heartland, this fertile, green area has influenced Korean cuisine more than any other part of the country. For foodies, no trip to Korea is complete without eating your way through Jeollabuk-do. The provincial capital city of Jeonju is a must-stop for any fan of Korean food, especially for its most well-known export, bibimbap, a dish of rice, meat and vegetables served up by countless restaurants nationwide and abroad. Rural Jeollabuk-do is an outdoor-lover’s paradise. Much of this province is parkland. With unspoilt national and provincial parks covering its beautiful mountains, this rural province offers some of Korea’s finest get-away-from-it-all hikes and scenery. In summer, sun wor- shippers head out to the white sandy beaches of the West Sea islands like Seonyu-do. In JEOLLABUK-DO the winter, thrill-seekers descend on the slopes of Muju Ski Resort, offering the highest and most picturesque slopes in Korea. Jeollabuk-do is deeply tied to its traditional culture and roots. Buddhist temples and folk villages abound. Modern Jeonju bumps up against its historic urban village of hanok (tradi- tional houses) containing craft workshops, museums and rustic teashops.
