894 Lunar New Year The lunar New Year, known as 561, W6ndan, W6ni! or Cbongch '0, is one of the most important holidays in Korea. During this holiday, there are traffic jams throughout the country as people rush to see their family and relatives. On the morning of Lunar New Year, people don traditional dress (hanbok). Various foods and wine are prepared, and then set in front of an ancestral tablet. The table is meticulously arranged according to Confucian tradition; however, many families also have their own traditions governing details of the arrangement. In general, fish is put on the east, meat on the west, fruit in front, rice and soup behind and liquor on the front table. A ceremony is then held during which the male family members pay respect to their deceased ancestors up to the fourth generation by making three full bows. Family members also visit the graves of their deceased ancestors. On this holiday, after cutting the grass from around the grave, they make a simple offering and then bow three times. In addition to paying respect to the deceased, each family member is expected to make two formal bows to his or her elders. According to custom, the elders then give the person a gift of money, particularly if the person is a child. Special foods are prepared for this holiday. In particular, rice-cake soup is typically served instead ofrice. For this reason, the question 'How many bowls of rice-cake soup have you eaten?' is sometimes used to ask one's age. In North Korea and China, mandu (dumpling) soup is often eaten instead. -

© Lonely Planet 305 Jeollabuk-do 전라북도 The southwestern province of Jeollabuk-do (www.jeonbuk.go.kr) is Korea’s rice bowl. The image of white egrets standing in terraced rice fields is a provincial icon. As Korea’s agricul- tural heartland, this fertile, green area has influenced Korean cuisine more than any other part of the country. For foodies, no trip to Korea is complete without eating your way through Jeollabuk-do. The provincial capital city of Jeonju is a must-stop for any fan of Korean food, especially for its most well-known export, bibimbap, a dish of rice, meat and vegetables served up by countless restaurants nationwide and abroad. Rural Jeollabuk-do is an outdoor-lover’s paradise. Much of this province is parkland. With unspoilt national and provincial parks covering its beautiful mountains, this rural province offers some of Korea’s finest get-away-from-it-all hikes and scenery. In summer, sun wor- shippers head out to the white sandy beaches of the West Sea islands like Seonyu-do. In JEOLLABUK-DO the winter, thrill-seekers descend on the slopes of Muju Ski Resort, offering the highest and most picturesque slopes in Korea. Jeollabuk-do is deeply tied to its traditional culture and roots. Buddhist temples and folk villages abound. Modern Jeonju bumps up against its historic urban village of hanok (tradi- tional houses) containing craft workshops, museums and rustic teashops. The destruction of coastal forests caused by R. undulata infection has been mainly associated with bonfires at camping sites. However, Rhizina root rot was observed in the western coastal forests without fire. It was hypothesized that Rhizina root rot in this area might be closely related to the soil salinity, which can facilitate the growth and survival of R. undulata. So, the variation in sodium chloride (NaCl) resistance among isolates of Rhizina undulata was compared using liquid media containing different concentrations of NaCl ranging from 0 mM to 300 mM. -

Tilland University of Washington Abstract Hateful and Heartwarming Bonds: The Senses as Strategy in the South Korean Family Bonnie R. Tilland Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Ann Anagnost Department of Anthropology This dissertation investigates women’s strategizing around the senses in South Korea, tracing the ways that women move between sensory experience as an ideal and as an object to put into motion. I argue that the language of the sensory is invoked to stand up to state or societal pressures regarding family-making, child-rearing, and maternal subjectivity. The senses, affect, and emotions are employed to carve out space for individual and family well-being within neoliberal logics of productivity, but these new areas of sensory possibility are too often colonized by the same neoliberal logics. Utilizing multi-sited ethnography, media analysis, and an interdisciplinary feminist perspective, I followed the language of sensory development and sensory experience in practice through participant-observation at community spaces, and through ethnographic interviews. The main issues of this dissertation include: first, the ways that the extended family in South Korea is structured through visual culture and watching/being seen, resulting in ambivalence, particularly in the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship. Second, how touch and other senses are conceived of as avenues for emotional and psychological fortification for young children, and how this cultivation of sensory education is extended not just to the mother-child bond, but also to national healing. -

Following the city-county consolidations, there has been significant debate regarding whether the local mergers achieved the desired effect. This study seeks to determine whether the technical efficiency of the consolidated governments improved following the mergers, whether their financial status improved, and whether the disparities between the urban and rural areas were reduced. The literature review in this study identifies the most significant literature and the most prominent theories pertaining governmental size and boundary. It also highlights local governmental consolidation studies previously conducted in both the U.S. and South Korea. Finally, it describes the South Korean local governmental structure, and discusses the process of the city-county consolidations that took place in South Korea from 1994 through 1995. To facilitate the research and analysis related to the city-county consolidations in South Korea, this study has identified and tests the following three hypotheses: •H1: The technical efficiency of consolidated governments improved following the city-county consolidations. -

The data can be used to analyze the impact of new high-speed railway (HSR) openings. This study examined the population observed in stations and cities of the Honam HSR line in Korea, based on mobile phone data recorded one year before and after its opening. We analyzed the volume of the population observed at each railway station, density of the distance between home and station, and activity hotspots in a city. The results show that the number of people and travel distance increased after the opening of the HSR. The distance to access railway stations increased, as the HSR saves travel time. Moreover, the activity hotspots in a city increased after the opening of the HSR, as more people gathered near the station area. The findings show that the mobility measures enhanced after the opening of the HSR for regional travel and local activities.
