The aim of this course is to introduce students and to expose students to as much of the history and breadth of manga as possible. The breadth and scope of manga is limitless, as every imaginable genre exists. With over 10,000 manga being published every year (roughly one third of all published material in Japan), there is no way that one course can cover the complete history of manga, but we will cover as much as possible. We will read a number of manga together as a class and discuss them.

PROGENITOR OR MERE PREDECESSOR: A STUDY OF UKIYO-E’S PLACE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN MANGA THROUGH THE WORKS OF RUMIKO TAKAHASHI A THESIS IN Art History Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of The requirements for the degree MASTER OF ARTS by Julia Fields Jackson B.A., Pomona College, 2006 Kansas City, Missouri 2014 © 2014 JULIA FIELDS JACKSON ALL RIGHTS RESERVED PROGENITOR OR MERE PREDECESSOR: A STUDY OF UKIYO-E’S PLACE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN MANGA THROUGH THE WORKS OF RUMIKO TAKAHASHI Julia Fields Jackson, Candidate for the Master of Arts Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2014 ABSTRACT In their effors to understand the history of manga , or Japanese comics, scholars have struggled determining the timeline of this art form. While some historians begin their narrative as far back as the twelfth century with examples of art that might be classified as “pre-manga ,” some academics choose to cite the start point manga ’s timeline in the nineteenth century with the first usage of the term “ manga .” Others researchers are even more conservative, beginning their scope of manga ’s history with the techniques developed during the mid-twentieth century which yield artwork recognizable to today’s aesthetics. The study of manga is still in an embryonic state, and the scope of this genre of art is vast; these two factors create a challenge in establishing a timeline for manga ’s history. Although it would be convenient to consider the history of Japanese illustrative art as a timeline that leads directly to modern manga , the myriad of genres and styles complicate the researcher’s ability to make claims about the pertinence of any specific point on that timeline to the development of manga as it is known today.

  • The Barefoot Gen Anime in the Aftermath of The
ISSN 2280 9481 Orienti/Occidenti Facing the Nuclear Issue in a “mangaesque” Way: The Barefoot Gen anime In the aftermath of the earthquake on the 11th March, 2011, and especially the nuclear power plant accident, questions have rekindled about the critical role of popular media such as manga and anime in contemporary Japanese society. This current has manifested itself, among other things, in revisiting the A-bomb manga Hadashi no Gen (Barefoot Gen, Keiji Nakazawa, 1973-87; below: GEN). GEN was, arguably, the very first Japanese comic to cross language borders thanks to activists of the peace movement1. In Japan, it saw an exceptional acknowledgement already in the 1980s, entering school libraries. However, responses within Japan towards the Fukushima meltdowns suggest that GEN did not contribute to raising a critical awareness about the dangers of nuclear power plants on that earthquake-ridden archipelago. The same applies to the two animated film adaptations, released in 1983 and 19862. Since the 1980s, GEN has seen its canonization related to A-bomb literature. This facilitated a primary focus on representation and contents. In addition to peace messages critics have, for example, appreciated the visibility of the Korean minority, as epitomized by Gen’s neighbour Mr. Pak3. Such emphasis on ideological readings by critical intellectuals may have contributed to diminishing GEN’s initially subversive potential for younger consumers. As such, GEN can serve as 148 a good example of how popular media texts work, particularly in contemporary Japan, the (almost) uncontested “empire of manga”4. Artists have been offering stories which hold the potential for political readings, but consumers do not necessarily actualize this potential.

The Creature of Asexual Love in My Name is Shingo Yasuyo SOMEYA Freelance media journalist [email protected] Introduction Last year, I was trying to explain my paper to an American who was trying to proofread the English translation. In that paper, I discussed the romantic and asexual relationship that existed between two women, developing the idea of Rothblum and Brethony (1993). The American told me that ‘romantic’ and ‘asexual’ love is paradoxical, and cannot coexist and that when you use the word ‘romantic’ to describe a relationship, this will usually suggest a physical dimension as well as an emotional one. He went on to say that he understood ‘romantic’ and ‘asexual’ love to represent a relationship between children. Does this mean that adults cannot experience both a ‘romantic’ and an ‘asexual’ kind of love? Adults tend to disregard the love that exists between children because the conventional wisdom is that love is something that takes place between physically and emotionally mature individuals. When children 1 announce that they love each other, adults like to suppose the feeling is not so deep, or sincere. This article discusses the story of Kazuo Umezu’s comic book, Watashi wa Shingo (My Name is Shingo) (1982-1986) within the context of asexuality. Readers see how two elementary school pupils, a girl named Marine and a boy named Satoru, fall in love and are blessed with a rather unorthodox child which happens to be a robot. This robot is called Shingo and the story recounts how its mind develops and how it travels the world in pursuit of its ‘parents’ whom it has never had a chance to meet.
