  • “Why So Serious?” Comics, Film and Politics, Or the Comic Book Film As the Answer to the Question of Identity and Narrative in a Post-9/11 World
ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality. The results were analyzed by critically examining the source material, with a cultural criticism emerging regarding the progression of this subgenre of motion pictures as meaningful work. “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Miami University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Communications Mass Communications Area by Kyle Andrew Moody Miami University Oxford, Ohio 2009 Advisor ___________________ Dr. Bruce Drushel Reader ___________________ Dr. Ronald Scott Reader ___________________ Dr. David Sholle TABLE OF CONTENTS ACKNOWLEDGMENTS .......................................................................................................................... Yet, as I argue, this world-colonizing force is not neutral. The anticipatory projection and world-building characteristic of scientific theorization are grounded in a practical comportment, so that the essence of technology or Craft is ontologically prior to theoretical science. In other words, science is always already Technoscience.

  • Surveillance, Social Order, and Gendered Subversions
SURVEILLANCE, SOCIAL ORDER, AND GENDERED SUBVERSIONS IN BATMAN COMICS, 1986-2011 by © Aidan Diamond (Thesis) submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master’s of Arts Department of English Memorial University of Newfoundland October 2017 St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador !ii ABSTRACT Batman is “the world’s most popular superhero.”1 An icon of American excep- tionalism, Batman has been featured in radio programmes, television shows, musicals, and more films than any other superhero since his 1939 comic book inception. While Batman has also been the subject of more scholarship than any other superhero, sustained scholarly inquiry of his vigilante infrastructures and their effects upon those Batman deems criminal is scarce; instead, critical readers prefer to interrogate his fascist under- tones. This thesis aims to ameliorate this lack of scholarship by interrogating Batman’s regulatory surveillance assemblage, particularly how it is negotiated and subverted by Barbara Gordon/Oracle and Selina Kyle/Catwoman. Using Foucault’s theories of crimi- nality, Lyon’s articulation of surveillance, Haraway’s cyborg hybridizations, Mulvey’s deconstruction of the gaze, and Butler’s and Tasker’s respective conceptualizations of gender, I argue that female characters problematize and complicate the otherwise unques- tioned authority of Batman’s surveillance assemblage in the 1986-2011 DC continuity. 1 “Batman Day Returns!” DC Comics. 14 June 2016, www.dccomics.com/blog/2016/06/14/batman-day- returns. Accessed 16 July 2017. !iii Acknowledgements This project owes its existence to a great many people who supported and encour- aged me throughout the process, asked insightful and necessary questions, took the time to read early chapter drafts, let me take the time to pet dogs and read non-Bat-comics, and were just generally the best friends a thesis-writer could hope for.

THE ONLINE LIBRARY OF LIBERTY © Liberty Fund, Inc. 2006 http://oll.libertyfund.org/ JOHN MILTON, AREOPAGITICA (JEBB ED.) (1644) The Online Library of Liberty is a project of Liberty Fund, Inc., a non-profit educational foundation based in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. Liberty Fund, was established to foster thought and encourage discourse on the nature of individual liberty, limited and constitutional government, and the free market. About the Author Milton ranks among the greatest poets of the English language. He is best known for the epic poem Paradise Lost (1667), but he also wrote prose works on history, religion, and contemporary politics. Although his academic talents marked him for a career in the Anglican church, Milton turned away from the Church of England at an early age and was a consistent supporter of the Puritan cause. He spent most of his life in academia or as a civil servant working for the Puritan Commonwealth. About the Book An edition based upon Sir Richard Jebb’s lectures at Cambridge in 1872, with extensive notes and commentaries on this famous work. Milton’s famous defence of freedom of speech. It was a protest against Parliament’s ordinance to further restrict the freedom of print. Milton issued his oration in an unlicensed form and courageously put his own name, but not that of his printer, on the cover. The Edition Used Areopagitica, with a Commentary by Sir Richard C. Jebb and with Supplementary Material (Cambridge at the University Press, 1918). Copyright Information The text of this edition is in the public domain. Bessler* I am certainly not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions. But laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors.
