This signified economic justice, pay equity and full equality for women’s rights through edu- cation and the fight against social exclusion which permits everyone, whatever their gender, to live with dignity, freedom, equality, justice and peace. Over the years Mararia has been supported by some 760 collaborators. On Friday 25 October, the At- lantida Theatre in Arrecife was to- tally packed out with a public ma- nifesting their solid appreciation for founder Nieves Rosa Hernández and her team, who have dedicated their lives to achieve equality for di- sadvantaged women. A film about Mararia’s projector from its humble beginnings, its aims and achieve- ments as well as projections for the future, concluded with the signing of the Act of Constitution in 1994. Nieves Rosa Hernández expres- sed a heartfelt message of gratitude to the team of voluntary multi-lin- gual supporters upon whom Mara- ria has depended over the past 25 years.

She was visibly overwhelmed by the par- ticipants in the gala whose performances demonstrated an outpouring of love for Nieves who had given so many thousands of disadvantaged women help and companion- ship as well as hope for a happier future. The beautiful voices of Coral San Ginés sang Mararia’s message with the words of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, “Your fai- th was strong but you needed proof” and John Lennon’s Imagine, “You may say I’m a dreamer but I’m not the only one,” among many other wonderful songs, all excellently arranged. Then came a recital by three generations of the Corujo family, commencing with an aria by operatic tenor Pancho, followed by a recital of his cousin Ciro and niece, 10 year old Merceditas as well as his uncle An- tonio all accompanied by maestro-timplist Domingo Rodriguez, El Colorao. Their solos and duets really brought the house down. Although we were listening to a concert in a sold out theatre, it felt as if you were enjoying an evening of music at home with your family.

Standing on the top of Mount Guanapay overlooking Teguise, the fortress was strategically placed by Italian naval en- gineer Leonardo Torriani to overlook both coastli- nes and warn of impending pirate attacks. Mayor Oswaldo Betancort referred to the refurbis- hment as being of major importance as it is one of the most historic buildings in the whole of the Canary Islands and a close to 1 million euro budget has been allocated by Central Government for the project. As explained in the multi-lingual panels of the museum, the history of pirate attacks on Teguise commenced with two major raids by the Portu- guese, one by Henry the Navigator in 1450 fo- llowed by a second by a French buccaneer known as “The Cleric” who plundered the town. In 1569, Moorish corsair Calafat commanding 600 men on ten galleys disembarked at Arrecife and ransacked the island over the period of a month and sailed off with 200 captives. Francis Drake, Walter Raleigh and William Har- per were among well known English buccaneers who raided the Canaries. In 1567, English priva- teer John Hawkins turned up in the Canaries on his way to capturing slaves in Africa destined for America. Unlike most of his ilk, he was a real cha- racter and well liked by the local Canary Islanders with whom he traded.
